It's a slog and is relentlessly sad. But it's a good book.

FuckThePoPo · 29/08/2024 13:47

My god woman

no I do not recommend and I say this as a bona fide member of literary misery!!!

EmmasDilemmas · 29/08/2024 13:48

It’s very well written but so sad and relentless that I wouldn’t read it again.

massistar · 29/08/2024 13:52

Grim, relentless and badly written. One of the very few books I didn't finish.

makingmakingbaconpancakes · 29/08/2024 13:54

I loved it. Bawled my eyes out like someone I love had died, repeatedly, but still loved it. Couldn't read anything else for a while afterwards.

massistar · 29/08/2024 14:05

Safe to say it's a love it or hate it book!

ASuitableName · 29/08/2024 14:39

I almost gave up on it at the end of the first chapter, but I’m so glad I persevered. It’s not an “enjoyable” book because the storyline is very tough to read, but it’s a story that I don’t think I shall ever forget. It was unsettling, and I confess that I shed a few tears towards the end - I’m not usually so emotional when reading.

corlan · 29/08/2024 14:45

Give up now - save yourself while you still can I got foo far in and felt I had fo finish it. It's an absolute misery fest. I could have spent that time more productively and happily licking the piss off a public urinal.

I don't really agree that it is well written. I found her style exhausting to read, great long paragraphs of run-on sentences and subclauses. As well as no likeable characters, a lot of it was quite mundane. A definite TLDR

sirthisisawendys · 29/08/2024 19:09

Oh god, it's bloody hard work. Possibly one of the most miserable books I've ever read.

Make sure you've got a box of wine in the house and possibly some diazepam for the ending.

Timeforabiscuit · 29/08/2024 19:13

I read about half way, and then have it to the charity shop with a note intended as a trigger warning.

It's the most miserable book I've ever read, and I enjoyed the road!

endofthecorridoor · 29/08/2024 19:29

I loved it. But I'm a sucker for a looonnnngggg read

MrsTaytodarling · 29/08/2024 19:39

Thanks all! I'm defo going to stick with it

I did finish it, which surprises me because I’m quite happy to abandon a book if it’s crap. It is hard work and it isn’t particularly enjoyable!

sirthisisawendys · 29/08/2024 19:49

If you survive this one OP move straight onto The boys in the trees. Same author.

Mebebecat · 29/08/2024 19:52

It's fucking terrible. Happy to help. I've known and worked with many many abused and disabled people in my life and I have NEVER met one who was such a professional victim. Or so self indulgent and just bloody irritating. Good riddance to Jude and all his unlikely, enmeshed and enabling 'friends'
My most hated book of all time.

Exactly this...
But it's one of those books that must be read...

westisbest1982 · 30/08/2024 08:39

I loved it - relatable, three-dimensional characters, an immersive story and beautiful writing combine to make this a masterpiece. It's one of my favourite novels of all time.

massistar · 30/08/2024 13:30

I don't know any other book which divides people quite so much. I found it the total opposite of some PPs in that I found the characters utterly unlikable with no depth and the writing was dreadfully self indulgent and a meandering plot. Demon Copperhead which is almost as depressing absolutely knocks it out of the park.

MrsTaytodarling · 13/09/2024 15:28

Ok I finished it. I did enjoy it, would recommend but with a trigger warning!

It is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I’ll always remember where I was when I read it. But I’ll never read it again and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Haha! I’m reading demon Copperhead next. Maybe I should reconsider!

Creepybookworm · 14/09/2024 00:11

Rubbish in my opinion. Loved Demon Copperhead.

DesigningWoman · 14/09/2024 00:29

Relentless grim misery porn, to the point that induced giggles.

Thank you for this. I couldn’t bear Jude, thought there was something wrong with me 😊
