I'm trying to find a series of books I can work my way through. I'd like crime/police, female detective set in the Uk. I've listened to some Sally Rigby books and I think I'll try Elly Griffith but any other recommendations?

Watching as I'd like to read these too. Wish there was something like Happy Valley!

Can you believe I haven't seen Happy Valley, I think I tried the first season and didn't get very far. Is it worth persevering? That makes me think I could try Anne Cleaves (not sure if I've spelt that right), Vera books.

The Vera books by Ann Cleeves are very good.

Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series

Susie Steiner’s Manon Bradshaw trilogy

I just read Alias Emma by Ava Glass – spy fiction rather than crime but it’s great. First in a planned series apparently.

Seconding this! I'm a few chapters into book two and very much enjoying them.

Meceme · 05/02/2023 11:23

The Anne Cleeves Vera books are excellent as are the Ellie Griffiths Dr Ruth Galloway novels, although they're a little lighter.
If you want something grittier and much darker try Martina Coles Kate Burrows series starting with Ladykiller. Be warned though it's very graphic.

Off to research all of these and then agonise about buying them on Amazon and not my local book shop.

Angela Marsons books are great.

WipeYourFeet · 05/02/2023 14:43

I second the suggestion of Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series. They're very good stories and well written.

undercoverhero74 · 05/02/2023 17:37

The Detective Lottie Parker series by Patricia Gibney is an easy read.
Or the Detective Erika foster series by Robert Bryndza

Cath Staincliffe has written three books based on Scott & Bailey. I quite enjoyed the first one.

sazza76 · 08/02/2023 00:07

The Rizzoli/Isles books by Tess Gerritsen are very good, and The Grant County series of books by Karin Slaughter.

I've seen the show, are the books well written? For some reason I'm hesitant that the books might be a bit simple.

Slightly different, but the Thursday Murder Club series is brilliant. Also, YA I think, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.

sazza76 · 08/02/2023 15:30

The tv series is good but I found the books even better. Definately didn’t find them simple
