Mary Paulson Ellis - she's written 3 books set in Edinburgh. Sort of mysteries but lots about the characters and their relationships if that makes sense. They're not exactly a series but have some characters in common.

www.literature-map.com/ this can be a good starting point

BeethovenNinth · 12/10/2022 20:05

DorotheaFrazil, it's a great way of finding new authors to try.

akabluebell · 12/10/2022 20:14

Patrick Gayle, sometimes amusing, sometimes bittersweet. A Place Called Winter was amazing ❤

Some of Chris Brookmyre's books are a little like Kate Atkinson, with the Scottish/sardonic sort of throwaway black humour, or at least I suppose it's Scottish, as I notice it's common to a lot of Scottish writers.

I find I need to pick and choose, and, for example, love his Jasmine Sharp, Angelique de Xavier and Jack Parlabane books. His science fiction not so much, but I think that's probably because as a teen I read too much science fiction .

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 12/10/2022 20:16

Sounds like you like good characterisation and a great plot.

Sarah Winman, Still Life
Clare Chambers, Small Pleasures
Clare Fuller, Unsettled Ground
Ronan Hession, Leonard and Hungry Paul (one of my favourite books of all time)

BaconAndAvocado · 12/10/2022 20:20

I loved Hamnett so will try and read some more Maggie O’Farrell, although I gather her latest hasn’t had fantastic reviews?

Love Sarah Winman and Donna Tartt. Found Richard Osman ok.

Will have a gander at the other authors mentioned here.

HariboReckoning · 12/10/2022 20:39

Peter Carey

Susan Hill

BaconAndAvocado · 12/10/2022 20:45

Love Amanda Craig and Mary Lawson!
Did Patrick Gale write the Heart’s Invisible Furies? If so, I think he’s a superb writer.

Jonathan Coe - read most of his. Mostly v funny.
The Rotters Club and Middle England are v good indeed.
Patrick Gale.
He didn't write The Hearts invisible Furies, though that was John Boyne.

BaconAndAvocado · 16/10/2022 15:57

Jonathan Coe! Yes I’ve read and loved the Rotter’s Club and another one I think but not Middle England.

Ive just ordered Hanya Yanigahara’s new book (she wrote a Little Life) and Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. I loved All the Light We Cannot See.
