Helen Dunmore

We literally said the same author within ten mins of each other! You and I clearly share novel taste 😜

Sara Sheridan's Mirabel books, set just after WWII in Brighton. Mirabel is a wee bit like Robin Ellacott.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 16/10/2022 21:38

Maggie O’Farrell
Sarah Winman
Julien Barnes
Emma O’Donoghue
Patrick Gale
David Nichols
Sarah Moss

Yes to Sarah Moss and Maggie O'Farrell.
Maybe also, although it's more genre crime, John Banville writing as Benjamin Black: the Quirke series. Crime in 50s Dublin. Great period settings/food/clothes etc, sharp plotting, good characters.

Stef Penney, maybe?
William Boyd
Hannah Kent

Helen Dunmore, Sarah Dunant and Sarah Waters were the writers that popped into my head.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 18/10/2022 16:18

Oh, and Andrew Taylor too.

BaconAndAvocado · 18/10/2022 16:28

Thank you. Yes, I’ve read and enjoyed Sarah Waters.

Kazuo Ishiguro. David Mitchell (not the comedian). Richard Powers. Ian McEwan. Anne Enright. Anne Tyler. Elizabeth Strout.
I can never stop... each one suggest another two or three or more...😃

carkerpatridge · 18/10/2022 19:07

Tracy Chevalier, Victoria Hislop, Jojo Moyes, Georgina Harding

ilovesushi · 18/10/2022 21:19

Agree with loads of these. I'd like to add Wally Lamb. I don't usually read books by male writers, but he is one of my favourite authors.

bigbadbarry · 19/10/2022 07:39

We have the same taste in books. ‘The hand that first held mine’ is my favourite Maggie O’Farrell and I strongly second the recommendation for Sarah Moss but start with her earlier ones

BaconAndAvocado · 19/10/2022 14:35

Wow, loads to explore! Thanks all 🙂

Patrick Gayle, sometimes amusing, sometimes bittersweet. A Place Called Winter was amazing ❤

My favourite of his books is A Perfectly Good Man.

PG's new one, Mother's Boy is 99p (Kindle version) from Amazon at the moment.
