Off on holiday in Feb and I need something that will keep me gripped on the plane!!

I have never ever read a book more terrifying than The Treatment by Mo Hayder, which I have now read multiple times and need something in a similar vein.
I've read and enjoyed Tess Gerritson, Mark Billingham but nothing has got me like Hayders books.

Any suggestions at all gratefully received!

Just coming on to say have you ever read Stephen King? The Shining is one of the scariest books I've ever read.

I also loved The Stand and It

I have never heard of Mo Hayder. Treatment seems to be book 2 but book 1 is only 99p on Kindle so I've got it on my list! Thank you!

@gelert5619

The most disturbing book I've ever read and will never read again is American Psycho. The film is more like 'In the Night Garden' compared to the book.
Yes. Gave me horrific thoughts.

@PuzzlingRecluse

Dark matter by Michelle paver - still haunts me, absolutely brilliant read but terrifying
Great read!
Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 10/02/2022 17:50

I'm a wimp but I watched Behind her Eyes and although it was implausible with some dodgy acting, the ending stayed with me for a while.

serendippity · 10/02/2022 17:53

I'll definitely read American Physco, I I'd watch it, I'm interested how it will be written!
@AllThingsServeTheBeam yes, The shining really really freaked me out!

Have you read all the Mo Hayder Jack Caffrey series, I'm sure the treatment is the second one- poppet in that series is amazing as well!

BabyFeb22 · 10/02/2022 18:08

If not the series goes....Birdman, The Treatment, Ritual, Skin, Gone, Poppet and Wolf.
I also love the M.J Arlidge Helen Grace series.
Mandasue Heller forget me not is also a good one 😊

serendippity · 10/02/2022 18:08

@BabyFeb22 oh yes, I loved all of her books, I'm honestly sad there won't be any more Jack Caffrey

Does anyone have The Treatment who would be willing to post it on? I am so intrigued!

BabyFeb22 · 10/02/2022 18:09

@serendippity I was the same, I've read them all so many times!

BabyFeb22 · 10/02/2022 18:16

@guuuuh I have them all on kindle or I would! Sure my mum managed to get the all from Amazon under the new and used bit though for about £10 which is a lot better than paying full price! Also I'm not sure where you are but my library have started doing ebooks or you can now search online to see if they have them so may be worth looking that way as well 😊

serendippity · 10/02/2022 18:26

@guuuuh absolutely, I'm happy to post you mine, if you want to pm me?

Ah thanks so much! How do I message on the app?

britespark1 · 10/02/2022 21:40

Adam Neville is a recent favourite of mine and I’m yet another fan of Hex and Dark Matter!

TheDogsMother · 10/02/2022 21:43

I bailed out of American Psycho. It was so disturbing, particularly about the rough sleeper. I don't often give up on books but I had to with that one.

LethargeMarg · 10/02/2022 21:52

I found apple tree yard really harrowing and chilling. Much more unnerving and grim as a book compared with the tv series. Ruined a holiday I was on as I felt quite traumatised by it

serendippity · 10/02/2022 22:07

@guuuuh argh I don't have the app, I don't know!! Anyone??
@LethargeMarg I had no idea apple tree yard was a book!
This is great, thank you so much everyone, Hex is a definite!

I agree with The Treatment. I read so many thrillers and most of them are fairly predictable, but this book completely took my breath away, just no idea what was about to happen. I was truly terrified. Never read anything like it.

Crucible · 16/02/2022 22:42

The Snowman. Jo Nesbo.
UTTERLY TERIFFYING.

ACatCalledPuss · 17/02/2022 22:18

I would second the books by Stephen King already recommended but would also add Pet Semetary and The Dead Zone. Another recommendation is a book by Catherine Ryan Howard called The Nothing Man

IsThisAkissingBook · 21/02/2022 23:04

Naomis room. I was seriously terrified and had to sleep with the light on for a week.

DiscoBadgers · 21/02/2022 23:06

Yet another vote for Dark Matter - it’s brilliant!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/02/2022 23:15

Dark Matter is excellent, I read it when I was snowed in one year, it made it even more terrifying!!

CIaireFraser · 22/02/2022 17:37

Dark Matter (and Thin Air, also by Michelle Paver) are two of my favourite books. Genuinely terrifying.

Erin Kelly is brilliant, particularly The Poison Tree. Liz Nugent, too - Lying in Wait was one of the most chilling things I've ever read.
