I’m halfway through Vox but I’ve had to stop as I couldn’t cope with it in the current climate! I was enjoying it though, perhaps one for you?

JaneJeffer · 10/04/2020 16:18

The Road

LongPauseNoReply · 10/04/2020 16:23

I've not heard of Vox, thanks!

I think I've heard of The Road before and heard good things

Swansong-Robert McCammon

noblegiraffe · 10/04/2020 16:32

Anything John Wyndham, especially The Chrysalids (post-nuclear apocalypse), Day of the Triffids (everyone goes blind plus aliens) The Kraken Wakes (rising sea levels plus aliens).

UrbanMage · 10/04/2020 16:36

We by Zamyatin
Children of Men by PD James
I am legend?

Some YA ones are pretty good as well.

SandyDays · 10/04/2020 16:41

The 'after it happened' series by Devon C Ford was excellent on audible.

LongPauseNoReply · 10/04/2020 16:41

Fantastic suggestions, thanks

I read one recommended on here years ago that I’m hoping someone remembers. I think it might have started on a blog. It was about electricity failing and a family trying to grow their own food etc. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? Thanks.

pinkmagic1 · 10/04/2020 17:30

Strictly a book aimed at teens but Children of the dust is very good.

nibdedibble · 10/04/2020 17:35

The End of the World Running Club was entertaining.

Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood.

piperatthegates · 10/04/2020 17:43

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley written a long time ago but still a good read.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 10/04/2020 17:47

I'm currently recommending Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel to everyone I know.

You need it right now.

LongPauseNoReply · 10/04/2020 18:44

Thanks Perdita!

@Q1w2e3 I think it was called Powerless by Suzanne Goldring. Fab book with lots of domestic detail.

BuffaloCauliflower · 10/04/2020 19:09

Oh and Station Eleven is excellent, though has slightly incredulous moments

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 10/04/2020 19:10

(There are one or two threads knocking around on it, but spoilers, so you'd want to read it first ...)

OhMrDarcy · 10/04/2020 19:14

Try One Second After by William Forstchen - set in the US and very good on small town disaster. Don't read if you've a diabetic in the family though.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 10/04/2020 19:21

I always recommend the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness.

TBH, you can't go wrong with lots more Stephen King in days like these. Have you read Cell?

A Clockwork Orange is worth the effort of wrestling with the language.

eurochick · 10/04/2020 19:21

I'm reading Station Eleven now. It started well. I hope it keeps it up!

dreamingbohemian · 10/04/2020 19:29

Station Eleven is very good!

If you liked Robert Harris, you might enjoy The Second Sleep

I'm currently halfway through The Last Day and really enjoying it

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2020 19:35

A Clockwork Orange is superb.

Cell is okay - basically a more modern and more YA-ish The Stand - not a patch on The Stand but okay.

I really liked the first Chaos Walking but thought they got worse and the third was poor.

The Passage is really good, second decent but I hated the third.

I HATED Station Eleven - it divides opinion a lot.

Mira Grant's Feed series is okay - zombies.

World War Z is good.
