I've read Fatherland, 1984, The Stand, Handmaid's Tale, etc. Am looking for recommendations along those lines .. plague, aliens and the like Grin

What's the best dystopian book you've read?

King's Dark Tower series isn't quite dystopian but is sort of post-apocalyptic and very good.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2020 19:38

You might like The Man in the High Castle but I didn't.

And The City and the City is worth a punt - again, not quite dystopian/apocalyptic but clever/really interesting premise. Loses itself a bit at the end.

VodselForDinner · 10/04/2020 19:38

I really liked Station Eleven.

Also recommend The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber. Bit different but broadly dystopian.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/04/2020 19:38

The End Specialist by Drew Magary

dreamingbohemian · 10/04/2020 19:39

Oh yes, I liked World War Z even though I normally hate anything zombie.

A lot of people recommend Annihilation but I really disliked it, it just seemed entirely pointless.

BreadmanAndCake · 10/04/2020 19:41

Children of the dust and Brother in the land. Both young adult novels but very good nonetheless.

TemoraryUsername · 10/04/2020 19:42

John Scalzi - Old man's war (and if you enjoy it there are so many books in the series)

Same author - Lock in, I read it over and over. Its about a virus though, soo maybe not one for now?!

Name Alderman - The Power

TemoraryUsername · 10/04/2020 19:42

oh, and Terry pratchett's The Long Earth

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2020 19:43

Oh gawd - The Book of Strange New Things!!!! I'd forgotten all about that - aliens and a wanking vicar. I hated it!

TerrifiedandWorried · 10/04/2020 19:45

How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff

QuentinWinters · 10/04/2020 19:47

I always recommend the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness.
Yes! It's brilliant

LongPauseNoReply · 10/04/2020 19:48

Yes I've read Cell and enjoyed it. I read How I Live Now and loved it, it's exactly the kind of story I'm looking for in new books

It's fabulous, isn't it? I really loved Vox.

Not sure I could read any dystopia stuff right now.

QuentinWinters · 10/04/2020 19:51

Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro

MadameJosephine · 10/04/2020 19:51

Just finished The Last Day by Andrew Hunter-Murray and loved it. The premise is that the planet has stopped turning and I thought it might be a big far fetched for me but the author is one of the QI elves and he’d obviously done his research

TheGlaikitRambler · 10/04/2020 19:54

I didnt like Station Eleven.

Age of Miracles was good, a bit YA though. What would happen if the world started spinning slower.

dreamingbohemian · 10/04/2020 19:56

This is a great thread -- thanks OP! Downloading some samples now.

The End Specialist looks really promising.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/04/2020 20:01

Only a short story, but I've just reread Night Surf by Stephen King. Brrr.

YahBasic · 10/04/2020 20:02

Really loved Vox and also the Passage trilogy.

BothALarkAndAnOwl · 10/04/2020 20:02

I loved Station Eleven. I’ve also just finished Robert Harris’ The Second Sleep, which I enjoyed a lot. It’s a pacy page-turner and a bit thin on character development but nonetheless very thought-provoking.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/04/2020 20:02

Also, Genus - Jonathan Trigell

VivaLeBeaver · 10/04/2020 20:03

The Wool trilogy by Hugh Howey.

Set a few hundred years after a pandemic killed off most of the population but some people fled to giant underground bunkers and set up a new society.

thebookeatinggirl · 10/04/2020 20:05

Lots of good suggestions already. I would add the Wool trilogy (Hugh Howey) and The Dog Stars (Peter Hell)

middleager · 10/04/2020 20:08

I've just listened to Animal.Farm on Spotify - there is an audio book on there. Though I'd like it if 1984 were on there too.

I do love The Stand. 11-22-63 is equally magnificent.

LongPauseNoReply · 10/04/2020 20:10

I loved 11-22-63 too! It's hard to go wrong with Stephen King
