Jilly Cooper!

What is YA?

1066vegan · 01/02/2020 16:21

@Hippychickster YA is Young Adult; what used to be called teenage fiction.

Hippychickster · 01/02/2020 16:30

Ah ok thanks!

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 11/02/2020 16:59

A friend was once surprised to see lots of Catherine Cookson on my shelves once. I’m not sure why, she writes a good story, her writing is good and there is pace and I have profound respect for the research put in (going down the mines and such like).

In the same vein as my collection of CC over the years (I love an interesting cover) I have a decent collection of Poirot novels and love Christie too (again, I tend to pick them up when I see interesting covers).

catinb0oots · 11/02/2020 17:36

Has anyone said Marian Keyes yet??? Blush

InspectorAlleyn · 12/02/2020 21:59

H Y Hanna (Tearoom Murders/Cottage Garden Murders). So predictable and you can tell who the murderer is immediately, but easy to read. I’m on my third this week Blush. They appeal to my love of Agatha Christie (but not as clever).

Lllot5 · 12/02/2020 22:04

@InTheCludgie
Nothing wrong with Agatha Christie, she’s not the world’s best selling author for nothing.

whatdoyouthinkyouknow · 12/02/2020 22:17

Jilly Cooper here too.

I'm showing my age.

bsc · 12/02/2020 22:52

I had absolutely no idea that Phillipa Gregory was considered so infra dig!

My username isn't for babysitting club...which I am guessing is sort of SVH for the generation below mine?

Fantababy · 12/02/2020 23:21

Another one who came on to say Marian Keyes. Could not admit that one at work.

GothMummy · 12/02/2020 23:30

I love Charlaine Harris. She wrote the books True Blood was based on. Vampires, iced tea and smut!

JaneJeffer · 12/02/2020 23:34

Ian McEwan. I'm not embarrassed but he's hated on here.

Honeybee85 · 12/02/2020 23:38

Danielle Steel

Honeybee85 · 12/02/2020 23:44

Also Barbara Bradford Taylor

rednsparkley · 12/02/2020 23:46

I love a bit of Karen Rose - crime novels with added smut - what's not to love Grin

kirkandpetal · 15/02/2020 04:17

And another Jilly Cooper fan here! I've read them several times over. Rivals and Polo are my absolute faves.
My mum would buy the latest copy as and when they were published, and taken it on our 2 week 'sun' holiday. She would read it, then my dad would occasionally read it, then I would. Cringe a bit now when I think we had all read the same sex scenes....I could only have been early to mid teens!

easythere · 15/02/2020 04:32

Sharon Lathan.... TOTAL smut but when I'm feeling really down they cheer me up a bit Blush

toria658 · 15/02/2020 05:07

Miss Read, the Fairacre books. Would never ever ever admit in public...

Frenchw1fe · 15/02/2020 05:17

Ooh. Haven't read Miss Read for years.
Used to really enjoy them.
Still like Enid Blyton Secret seven and Famous Five.
Also Conan Doyle.

AngusDuck · 15/02/2020 05:25

Donna Douglas, the Nightingale series. I keep those hidden away on my bedside bookcase so visitors won’t see! Blush

BlackCatSleeping · 15/02/2020 05:36

Me, too! Phillipa Gregory.

It’s just embarrassing because I know a lot of people criticize her novels and their accuracy, but I love them. It’s like if someone I knew said they thought the 50 Shades of Grey novels were well written, I’d be like 🤭

My current obsession in the world of historical fiction is Bernard Cromwell. I’m really enjoying his Viking novels.

Fullforcegale · 15/02/2020 05:46

Maeve Binchy. I love my kindle. My consumption of chick lit has increased exponentially since I can read it in public without judgement Grin

tenlittlecygnets · 15/02/2020 08:09

Marian Keyes
Patricia Scanlan
Marve Bunche
Lee Child

Nothing wrong with any of these authors. They may not write literary fiction but they write bloody good page turners and make you care about their characters. Not all authors can do that...

tenlittlecygnets · 15/02/2020 08:10

Maeve Binchy, ffs

Also love Nora roberts

InTheCludgie · 15/02/2020 14:49

True Llot5 but my colleagues view it as 'granny' fiction Confused
