Hi all, Just to let you know that the next book we plan to discuss in September is "The Cruel Mother" by Sian Busby, "A true story of motherhood, madness and infanticide after the Great War". In this book the author recounts the story of her great-grandmother who was imprisoned in the early 1900s after drowning two of her newly born triplets. After the birth of her second son, Sian Busby decided to investigate the story once and for all and lay to rest the ghosts which have haunted the family for 80 years....intrigued?

We have eight copies to give away to the first members to send their names and contact addresses to [email protected].

Cheers,

Rachel, Justine and Carrie

Oooo can I borrow it too, I'll send it back or on to someone?

Demented · 19/08/2004 17:24

Oooh my copy arrived on Tuesday (from Tesco), I'm hooked already!

Unfortunately I have someone who wants it after me so can't offer it to anyone at the moment.

Yorkiegirl, I've only taken part in the Book Club once before so this may not be the way it always works but last time IIRC once everyone had the book a rough date was set for a discussion, then nearer the time the date was confirmed and a time set to have a 'live' discussion.

Rachel (mumsnet) · 20/08/2004 13:41

Hi there

Sorry Yorkiegirl, hope you don't feel ignored, mumsnet HQ is a bit thin on staff at the mo with various folk taking their hols...

Anyway, the idea is that you all read the books now and then at a reasonable time (sometime in mid/late September) the discussion is started and open to all members to join in. Our Book Club Co-ordinator, Freddiecat, will be in touch in the next couple of weeks about when/how the discussion will start.

On a different note have those who won the 8 free copies of the books now received them? Let me know.

Cheers,

Rachel, Carrie and Justine

Titania · 24/08/2004 11:49

going mad trying to do my housework now so i can sit down later with a cup of tea and start reading it!!!

Demented · 24/08/2004 12:17

Warning, I'm about two thirds of the way through, once you start reading it's difficult to stop.

lou33 · 24/08/2004 12:17

I started reading a bit of it before I got out of bed. Am already hooked. Just the sort of thing I like.

lou33 · 24/08/2004 12:18

Demented, the only thing that stopped me from staying in bed and reading all day were 4 children begging for food!

Titania · 24/08/2004 12:21

lol you two!!! I dont know how i am going to find chance to read it at the moment!!! ds2 is teething!

Demented · 24/08/2004 12:23

"Get lost I'm reading my book!" Maybe that's why it's called The Cruel Mother!

CP3 · 24/08/2004 12:23

i want to read it but just started another book which i cant put down.

lou33 · 24/08/2004 12:23

Exactly. And what are 12 1/2 year old daughters for if not to look after the younger ones?

Demented · 24/08/2004 12:24

BTW I've had my copy for almost a week, I haven't just read two thirds since this morning!

Demented · 24/08/2004 12:25

LOL Lou33, I knew there was a reason for not putting them up for adoption when they were passed the baby stage!

CP3 · 24/08/2004 12:27

I only let my teenage daughter stay with us so she can mind the kids whilst im on mn.

lou33 · 24/08/2004 12:28

There are a few advantages to having older children

Ixel · 24/08/2004 13:19

My copy arrived this morning! I'm itching to read it! Ds is very happy playing with the packet it arrived in...

Freddiecat · 27/08/2004 15:20

Would Wednesday 23rd September at 9pm (BST) be a good time for a live discussion for every one?

This is completely unputdownable and I am finding it fascinating. I must remember to jot down a few bits I want to discuss with everyone as otherwise I'll forget. Very thought provoking.

SenoraPostrophe · 05/09/2004 13:39

I was just wondering what had happened to this discussion...

Bumping this thread up so other people have time to buy the book and join in. It's not what I was expecting, but it's a good read and very thought-provoking. Looking forward to the discussion!

Freddiecat - you will remind us closer to the time won't you?
