Exercise DVD: Hits and Misses! Which???

GigglyWrinkles · 15/03/2010 20:51

I'm thinking of getting a DVD to give me a workout during the evenings as I can't get childcare to go to the gym.
I've just discovered there are LOADS to choose from (gulp) so I'd be grateful on some hints as to which one may be useful. I'm not a flexible contortionist, nor a boxing fan. So anything that will leave my front room relatively intact would be ideal!

My DVD has been despatched!! Yikes! I'm just worried about planning/finding the time to do it - hmm should have thought of that before buying it

Sandy, perhaps you can just watch it through the first time? This is what I intend to do intially. When are you planning to exercise? Mornings or evenings?

Claire, I think it's great effort. And you should feel proud of yourself for taking the steps to get fitter. We all should So, well done you! Also, many thanks for the link to the weight. BTW I'll be interested to see what you think of the Davina FIT DVD. I was so so tempted to get Davina instead of the 30 day shred.

Fruitgums · 23/03/2010 10:03

Claire,

Did you use the weight the first time you did the DVD?

ClaireDeLoon · 23/03/2010 10:20

Yeah I did use the weights - the lightest ones obviously

My legs feel quite achey this morning, especially walking up stairs but I can still walk and I'm still alive!

Will have a go at the Davina one tonight and try to alternate, just keep going until I can do them all the way through. Perseverance is the only way, doing nothing will mean I remain fat and unfit!

Joby1970 · 23/03/2010 12:41

I would try & do the 30 day shred - on the beginner exercises if you worry that you may be too unfit. And just take it at your own pace. It's really empowering when you can do a move tho & there's one bit of it when she says that she has 400lbs people doing star jumps

SandylovesZsadist · 23/03/2010 12:52

Fruitgums : planning to try the DVD at the weekend and will try and do during the week at nights - don't have any time in the morning I'm out the house at 07:30.

Joby1970 · 24/03/2010 08:11

so guys how are you feeling today after your shred?

Fruitgums · 24/03/2010 09:14

Sandy - I think that I will try & do the DVD before leaving for work. Not sure whether it's do-able as I'm out of the bouse by around 7am. Doing the DVD in the evening will be my weakest time as I'll far too tired.

Joby - my DVD is on its way. Will let you know how I get on as soon as I've done a session.

Ignore above post - was meant to view it instead of posting - full of spelling mistakes!

i got davina power of 3 after suggestions on here, and you don't get too much gurnign from davina

ClaireDeLoon · 25/03/2010 00:34

I have ordered a new sports bra (was a bit bounce ouch bounce ouch) and will resume The Shred when that has arrived.

Fruitgums · 26/03/2010 10:48

Well my DVD has arrived. Will watch it tonight and if I'm feeling motivated I may do it too

Sandy - let me kmow how you get on with the DVD.

Claire - I can recommend the shock absorbers bra - expensive but so worth it especially if you are top heavy like I am.

Have a good friday everyone x

edwardcullensotherwoman · 26/03/2010 11:13

Just came across this thread - had the 30 day shred given to me by a friend of my mam, planning to start today. I haven't looked at it yet, but I'm a bit scared after reading the breakdown! I'm doing weightwatchers atm too so hopefully I should be nice and toned for my wedding in September!
Only thing is I don't have any dumbells - but I do have wrist weights somewhere. Does it matter if I do it without for a few weeks? I'll be starting a running program via another site on Easter monday too. Can you tell I'm a bit desperate to slim down?? lol

Fruitgums · 26/03/2010 11:47

Ed,

I am TRYING to do slimming world, started a beginner's running course mid feb and now will do the 30 day shred DVD! So you & I are going through a similar thing - no wedding planned though - I'm happliy married thanks

I haven't lost any weight though but feel so much better with the running. Will really need to focus on my diet in the comming weeks though. At the moment I ma trying to establish an exercise routine and then focus on my eating habits. Somehow I just can't manage both!

Good luck with the weight loss & let us know how you are getting on.

LostGirl · 26/03/2010 14:35

It is still a good workout without weights as a lot of them use your own bodyweight anyway (push ups, lunges, squats etc). You will not get the full benefit of the upper body exercises without weight but you can always fill with wet sand, or a couple of cans of baked beans to add some resistance.

Fruitgums · 29/03/2010 08:29

Think that intially I will be using baked beans as weights........

Fruitgums · 30/03/2010 12:57

Sandy - where are you?!

Joby1970 · 30/03/2010 13:02

FruitGums - Do you think she did the DVD & hasn't been able to move to get near her computer?

cyteen · 30/03/2010 16:50

How much space do you need for the Shred? I live in a v small terraced house, but am also getting married in September and wouldn't mind toning up a lot bit.

LostGirl · 30/03/2010 17:03

As long as you have enough room to do jumping jacks and to hold the plank/push up position on the floor then you should be fine, most of the exercises are on the spot such as lunges, butt kicks etc.

cyteen · 30/03/2010 17:10

Oh okay, was just slightly concerned by the list upthread that mentioned jumping rope - had visions of me taking out the light fitting

LostGirl · 30/03/2010 17:15

No rope involved, you just do the hand motions as though you are holding a rope, and look like an idiot

Fruitgums · 31/03/2010 08:36

Joby - it certainly looks like it!

I must confess that I haven't done the DVD yet. I'm hoping to start tomorrow after all it's a new month

Fruitgums · 01/04/2010 16:44

Well, I just exercised to the DVD and lived to tell the tale

My challenge will be to do this every day, hmmm. I had to stop a few times as it was so hard! The abs section was the one that I was dreading but it wasn't too bad. I hated the cardio section.

I didn't have any weights so I just used 2 tins of beans. However, I think I will need to invest in weights to get more out of the exercises.

Who else has done it? Come on, please share your experiences.

surrogateauntie · 02/04/2010 20:05

Avoid any of the yogalates DVDs, you have to be pretty fit to do them, and the annoying womans voice just infuriates....

Fruitgums · 02/04/2010 23:27

Well this is my second day of doing the DVD... and I can barely move! I was fine this morning (after exercising yesterday afternoon) but not now.... my legs just ache and I'm finding the cardio section a killer.... as well as all the lunges and squats.

Anyone else going through this? Or am I just talking to myself here?!
