Exercise DVD: Hits and Misses! Which???

I'm thinking of getting a DVD to give me a workout during the evenings as I can't get childcare to go to the gym.
I've just discovered there are LOADS to choose from (gulp) so I'd be grateful on some hints as to which one may be useful. I'm not a flexible contortionist, nor a boxing fan. So anything that will leave my front room relatively intact would be ideal!

hiya fruit gums. killing myself laughing at your last post. It's so hard in the early days - but I promise it does get easier

Fruitgums · 06/04/2010 13:17

I hope so Joby. I really hope so!

Joby1970 · 06/04/2010 13:19

not to gloat here but I did day 33 yesterday & did level 1 for a change & found it almost easy!! can't believe I can actually say that. I still got a sweat on tho.

MrsMorgan · 08/04/2010 09:43

Have just ordered this dvd. Can't afford the weights at the mo, might ask for some for my birthday in june.

I am hoping to tone up a lose about half a stone.

FacePalm · 08/04/2010 10:29

I received the 30 day shred on Tuesday from amazon!

I am very unfit tbh! I am a size 16..bmi 34. ( I have been eating healthy for a few weeks now and have lost almost a stone that way, but I have slowed right down and not lost for 2 weeks, so hoping this kick starts me again!)

The first day I did it (level 1), I had to stop for rests and struggled to keep up!

I was not in too much pain the day after(well, not as bad as I thought I would be, unless as you say going up stairs!), so I did it again, and already I felt like I could keep up better! In a bit more pain again today, but I am going to do it again! I love that it is only 20 minutes! it actually goes quite quick.

I only have 1kg weights, and I struggle with the jumping jacks a bit at the moment, but that is because I really need to get myself a sports bra!! So I have replaced the jumping jacks with the jump rope exercise for the time being... otherwise I end up doing the jumping jacks holding onto my boobs! ( I am by no means small in that dept!)

I have many many exercise dvd's! Most of them I got bored with after the first try, as it a lot of them are all "learn this move, then you do this, then this, now lets do the exercise, then learn this move and this, do exercise, now lets put both exercises together etc"! I love that this dvd just gets straight into it and no fancy moves to learn before you even do it is an exercise!

Hello! I'm loving this thread!! You are all so funny & I've had a good giggle reading through! I have ordered this DVD last night & was wondering what size weights to buy. I try to use the gym 2-3 times a week, (or when I can if I'm not a point of self loathing! )Haven't been for 2 weeks now! So I thought I'd take the DVD approach for when I don't want anyone to see me! I love watching the Biggest Loser with Bob (swoon) & Jillian & know I need the no nonsense approach she gives. I have good strength in my legs but dreadful upper body strength. There are 2 weight boxes that I have seen in Argos. one has weights where the lightest is 1.5 kg & the heaviest is 5kg the other set has the lightest starting at 1kg & the heaviest 2.5kg. I guess it would make more sense & be cost effective to start with the first set? Seeing as lots of you have been doing the DVD, I thought maybe you would be able to give me the answer. Many thanks!

Joby1970 · 08/04/2010 12:41

Well done FacePalm for taking the plunge it does get easier - well at least til you go up a level.

Blondie28143: I would recommend 1.5kg to 2Kg anything more & your arms will drop off lol.

i've become a right geek with this & have done a spreadsheet with my work outs since I started the shred. I too love Jillian & Bob - this think Bob looks the worse for wear since he became a veggie

Fruitgums · 09/04/2010 08:30

Blondie, which weights did you end buying?

Face, welcome to the tortute

Joby, do you do this DVD every single day?

Well, as for me I haven't excercised since sunday My official excuse is because I'm potty training my DS hence I'm exhausted already. But between you & me once I missed a session it was hard to get back to it. I'm hoping to re-start it tonight.... and with proper weights no less. I'm off to Argos this afternoon to buy some weights but can't make up my mind which to get. Should I go for:

this

or this?

I'm intending to buy the weights this lunchtime so I really hope that I will get a reply from you before then... Joby, hope that you are reading this

Fruitgums · 09/04/2010 08:32

Having said ALL that, I think the Davina weights look so pretty!

PatsyStone · 09/04/2010 10:00

Hiya haven't been on here for ages, but hope no one minds me putting in my tuppenceworth...

Fruitgums, personally I'd get the Davina ones, seeing as there is a heavier 2kg one, I see the heaviest one on the other set is only 1.5kg. Plus they are cute! Although I complained yonks ago on this thread, I have forced myself to only use the 2kg weights on the 30 day shred for the v squats, and I can do it! I just moan the whole way through, in a really unattractive fashion.

Don't give up, I can remember doing Davina's Three Thirty Minute Workouts and my thighs felt as though they were on fire for days, even touching them hurt, now it doesn't hurt at all, even while doing it. You can do it! A couple of days missed here and there won't do any harm.

I have started stringing level 2 and level 3 together in a row as suggested earlier in the thread, and it does make for a good workout, dunno why I didn't think to do that myself.

Only thing is, I have in the last fortnight eaten half of New York, had the biggest 30th birthday cake topped with alpini plus Easter and managed to put on nearly half a stone I'm going to need Jillian more than ever!

Joby1970 · 09/04/2010 12:43

Fruitgums - sorry only log on @ work & was at the docs for bloodtest this am. Both look OK prob go for the one with the 2K weight - I bought mine from Decathlon - cheaper.

I did the DVD for 30 days out of 35. I now use it as a back up to the gym

Fruitgums · 09/04/2010 15:12

Patsy - Davina weights are sold out EVERYWHERE

Happy beltaed birthday and hope that you enjoyed the cake - I know that I would have done. Also, I'm a little confused - are you doing the Davina DVD or the 30day shred?

Joby - can't find any dumbells on decathlon - they only sell them in single weights and I wanted a set so that I can work up to the heavier dumbell weights.

I see that all of the previous posters are still missing in action!

PatsyStone · 09/04/2010 15:29

Fruitgums- Bad luck on the dumbells, how annoying.

As to the DVDs, I do a mix, otherwise I'd probably get bored. I do Davina's Superbody, Three 30 Minute Workouts or Fit. Then 30 Day Shred two or three times a week. Sometimes Nell McAndrew but that is a bit tedious and repetitive.

As long as I do something five times a week I'm happy!

My dd always asks if I'm "doing the cross lady?" when I do 30 Day Shred!

Joby1970 · 09/04/2010 15:36

fruitgums - I bought these "DOMYOS
PVC dumbbells" - 2kg wEIGHTS. the lightest I would reccommend would be 1Kg to 1.5KG from Decathlon. maybe ring your local store & see - my store in Stockport usually has loads. I think the 2kg were approx 6.99

blondie28143 · 09/04/2010 17:04

Hi!
Fruitgums & Joby- I mentioned to my mum that I was after weights & she remembered she had a set of 1.5kg at home. So, I have got those for now. She has says she wants them back, so I can see how these go & hopefully (hmm) can buy ones with slightly more weight! My DVD hasn't arrived yet. In some ways I'm quite pleased! But I would like to make a start. I want to wear summer clothes this year instead of hiding!i have been eating healthy this week but wanted to eat everything in the cupboard so came on here instead! (grin)

MrsMorgan · 10/04/2010 10:43

Argh my dvd arived today and I tired to do level 1 but I hurt my back on the trampoline last week and so doing any of the jumping movements was agony.

I managed some of the less taxing stuff but am really dissapointed I couldn't do it all. I think i might havr to leave it until my back is completely better, although it doesn't seem to be improving much at all.

mummytotwins · 11/04/2010 15:56

I have read through all the posts on here and taken a plunge and ordered a copy of the 30 day shred!!!!

In order to make sure I dont cheat as I start my diet tomorrow as well I am going to take all my measurements as well as weigh myself.

Shall all of us doing this dvd do this weekly to encourage each other?

justaminute · 11/04/2010 21:37

I've been inspired by this thread and bought the DVD and weights! My calves are killing me when I go up/down stairs but otherwise all is good. I'm on day 4 now - I'm still in shock that I got out of bed at 6.45am today to do it!

After 15 mins I'm ready to give in but because I know there is only another 5 mins of torture to endure I carry on, I actually look forward to the ABS section as it is a chance to lie down

Thank you ladies for inspiring me to shift the baby belly that is gravitating towards my knees!

Joby1970 · 12/04/2010 08:39

I love the fact that MN is inpiring people to get the 30 DS. My mate & I started doing it together just over a month ago & we go round telling anyone & everyone about it.. it does feel kinda like a cult once you get into it lol

blondie28143 · 17/04/2010 10:09

Justaminute- you have said word for word what I feel!! I'm on day 6 today though eating heathily went out the window completely!! I have eaten & drank out twice, been to a bbq, another one today & invited o dinner tomorrow. I'll be surprised if I have any change whatsoever, however, I do feel much beter for doing the DVD!
Mummytotwins- I also measured everywhere last sunday, so even though I've not been the model studtent when it comes to eaing correctly, maybe I will have changed slightly!! It will be much easier I hope when the children are back at school & I'm back at work!! I feel like I've been partying for a month constantley now!

blondie28143 · 17/04/2010 17:17
