So as per title, I joined SlimmingWorld on Wednesday after years of neglecting myself. I became a diabetic two years ago and I never really bothered doing anything about it. Which I know is awful. It’s not that I was in denial or that I didn’t know how, it was that I sometimes have no control over food. I’ve had a food addiction ever since I could remember. I started gaining weight when I was 10 years old. I remember feeling like the odd one out. I feel like that now still. I know I don’t want to go into my 40s feeling exactly the way I felt in my 20s and now 30s. So all of that changes today!

I am currently 18 stone 6.5lbs.
I need to be 16 stones 8.5lbs in order to lose 10% of my bodyweight. So that’s my first weight loss goal.

I also have a goal of managing my diabetes from here on in, whether that may be with medication or food. I have invested in a libre2 plus sensor and I have joined the gym. So no excuses now.

I’m excited to be going on this journey and sharing it here. I know I’m not the only one out there who is on this journey, so please post here and we can all support one another. 😄

Hope everyone is doing okay?
I’ve been on plan & also fasting again. (Good for the diabetes)

I wanted to post something I found in Asda yesterday. Low carb wraps. You can have one as your healthy option B, or 6syns! It made me happy being able to eat for dinner yesterday. (Maybe not so good for the diabetes!)

I lost quite a bit of weight doing sw a few years ago.
I've since been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and toyed with the idea of going back to SW. But I remember it being quite carb heavy, rice, pasta and potatoes all being "free", and I've found that I need to low carb to keep my blood sugar under control.

@Slimmingworldnewestmember have you found it easy to eat low carb, or do you not need to? I know everyone is different.

@PractisingMyTelekenipsis , just because they are a free food, most people realise that somewhere along their journey they have to really reduce their carb intake.

So when there is a lot of weight to shift, most of the changes will allow for a pretty good sized portion. When I started I could easily eat half a packet of pasta in one sitting - and go back for more. Then I took on board that half or more of the plate needs to be speed - the old fruit and veg - and suddenly there wasnt so much room in my belly for so much pasta - eat until full - not bursting . And the closer you get to target, the less carbs you can get away with.

Just this week one lass, whose lost 5 stone has stalled. And she herself has realised that she's been eating bread, potatoes and perhaps rice or pasta 3 times a day - every meal has had carbs. She's now going to try a week of cutting the amount of time she carbs . I myself - at target - have to keep a tight reign on carbs - rarely now do I touch bread, pasta is once a week - and a normal healthy portion and the same with rice. Most carbs are from veg . It's just been a natural progression . I have found if I have a carb heavy day - Im hungry within an hour or so of eating , if I have protein and fibre I can easily stick to plan and not be looking snacks.

As I say, I went in thinking Whoopi doo I can gorge on pasta and soon came to realise I couldn't - not if I wanted to get the results I wanted.

Hi @PractisingMyTelekenipsis

Sorry to hear you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes. It really upset me when I was diagnosed, despite my grandma and mother both being diabetics!

Luckily for us, diabetes UK is in partnership with Slimming world for the next two years (3 but started back in February 2024) if you do decide to sign up, you can find a diabetic friendly meals on the app.
I tend to eat more slow releasing carbs, like wholewheat pasta. My diabetic nurse who I saw last week, said my pancreas is still producing insulin but just not enough. So whilst I am trying to focus on my diabetes, the best thing for me to do right now at 18 stone is lose as much weight as I can because that will help my blood sugar levels.

I agree with @suki1964 that not every meal needs to have carbs!
breakfast I tend to make, chicken sausages (Heck) 1/2 syn each. Bacon medallions (Free) 2 eggs (Free) mushrooms (Free) and Spinach (Free) tomatoes (Free) Using Fry light so it’s free.

Dinner is something like Spaghetti Bolognese with whole wheat spaghetti. Or a burger (no bun) 5 syns. Side salad & celeriac chips (Free)

I hope this helps you. ❤️

Thanks @Slimmingworldnewestmember and @suki1964 I didnt realise they'd partnered with diabetes UK. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago and have lost some weight since then, but its been so hard.

I was diagnosed Type II diabetic just over two years ago. I feel you on that, it is hard but you’ve already lost some weight, so you’re already on your journey.

Good luck & if you do decide to join SlimmingWorld, please come back and let us know how you’re getting on 😄

Well I've not had a great week, folks. I have been over my sins most days; struggling with chronic illness and exhaustion and just haven't been 'on plan' for a lot of it. Weigh in tomorrow will be disappointing, but I'm ready to hopefully do better next week.

Hi @Hatty65 Sorry you’ve not had a good week. Big hugs. Draw a line under it and start fresh tomorrow. 🤗
good luck.

I might get an early night. I have been working a lot more lately and I’m so tired. My weigh in is at 8am, so I’ll update after then.

That’s fantastic!!! 👏 Well done you!
I’m weighing at a different group tomorrow, a day early, as we’re going on holiday. Praying for a loss given that I chickened out last week and didn’t go!

Hatty65 · 25/09/2025 16:38

Congratulations, OP! Good luck to everyone else and many thanks for the sympathy!

I put 2.5lb on - but I'm feeling better and I'll be back on plan this week. Last week was tough and I didn't feel well enough to cook on several occasions so just ate whatever was easiest. (Toast on several occasions and a Chinese takeaway!)

I also had some very disappointing Sweet Peanuts as a nod to my 70s childhood but they were nothing like the originals. (That did not stop me eating the entire bag, of course)

I'm a cheerful sort of fool, so I'll keep plodding on!

Greenfingers37 · 26/09/2025 10:02

I weighed yesterday (a day early as we were going away) and lost a pound which took me under 12 stone-just!- for the first time in years! Very pleased although I’m going to be off plan whilst on holiday! Still trying to make more mindful choices though.
Have a great weekend everyone x

Greenfingers37 · 10/10/2025 11:12

Finally got my half stone! Has only taken 7 weeks! 😳🤣

Well done you @Greenfingers37 , you are well on the way to target now . Better choices should be becoming second nature now

Hatty65 · 10/10/2025 16:27

Oh well done! I lost 3.5lb this week by having some SP meals during the week - so I've lost the 2.5lb I had put on! It's so encouraging to get a certificate, so keep on going!
