So as per title, I joined SlimmingWorld on Wednesday after years of neglecting myself. I became a diabetic two years ago and I never really bothered doing anything about it. Which I know is awful. It’s not that I was in denial or that I didn’t know how, it was that I sometimes have no control over food. I’ve had a food addiction ever since I could remember. I started gaining weight when I was 10 years old. I remember feeling like the odd one out. I feel like that now still. I know I don’t want to go into my 40s feeling exactly the way I felt in my 20s and now 30s. So all of that changes today!

I am currently 18 stone 6.5lbs.
I need to be 16 stones 8.5lbs in order to lose 10% of my bodyweight. So that’s my first weight loss goal.

I also have a goal of managing my diabetes from here on in, whether that may be with medication or food. I have invested in a libre2 plus sensor and I have joined the gym. So no excuses now.

I’m excited to be going on this journey and sharing it here. I know I’m not the only one out there who is on this journey, so please post here and we can all support one another. 😄

I personally couldn't do it without my weekly group.

Personally today I have had my worse day in months. DH said breakfast out - his treat , and I was good, chose poached eggs, mushrooms and beans - with a dry slice of wholemeal and it was lush really hit the spot, but I felt uncomfortably full

And Saturdays is my crisp sandwich day, which I had bought the makings off on my way back from group. So even though I felt stuffed - I knew the makings were there and I wasnt going to content myself until it was down my neck

Then we had friends around for a drink early evening and I put out the nibbles - and another packet of crisp and a good handful of peanuts followed

I feel yuck

Probably calorie wise Im ok - but omg Im bloated , have a bit of a headache and feel like Im wearing clothes 2 sizes too small :(

Im feeling hungry - but stuffed and bloated at the same time - and not a single bit of fruit or veg in me today

So away to bed and hopefully sleep well, draw a line and tomorrow is another day

Greenfingers37 · 10/09/2025 18:53

How are we all doing this week?
I’ve pretty much stayed on plan (apart from a few vinos last Friday night!😳) but I don’t feel any slimmer and my clothes don’t feel any looser. Weighing on Friday and dreading it! Hoping for a miracle!

NurseP · 10/09/2025 19:31

Been a bit picky today but not totally off piste!

suki1964 · 10/09/2025 23:34

@Greenfingers37 I think Ive been ok since the disaster of the weekend, other then not eating enough - was. up at 5 and didnt get a bite till 8pm tonight for example , but when I am eating its protein, fibre and speed .

A pint of cider today as I went out for the afternoon with a friend and that's about as bad as it got since Saturday

Feeling hopeful

NurseP · 12/09/2025 11:42

@Slimmingworldnewestmember how you doing?

3 lb off for me this week. I have been really priorising it.

A pound off for me this week. Happy enough with that. Slow and steady wins the race.

NurseP · 12/09/2025 12:12

A pound off is great. All heading in the right direction!

Slimmingworldnewestmember · 12/09/2025 16:32

Hey all,

Sorry I’ve been rubbish at replying this week. I’ve been non stop eating for the past 6 days. I knew it would be a challenge for me but I didn’t realise it’d be this hard. Sorry you’ve had your challenges this week too @suki1964 I hope you’re feeling less bloated?

well done @NurseP 3lbs is incredible, as is 1lb @Greenfingers37 you’re both heading in the right direction. I hope that’s me next week. I need to get my butt into gear!

What snacks are we all eating? The evenings is where I struggle the most!

I gained 1lb this week. Not surprised. I just hope I haven’t done anymore damage in the last two days.
So,

SW: 18st 6.5lbs
CW: 17st 13lbs
(First) GW: 16st 8.5lbs

I'm doing SW - and I stick very carefully to 'free' food during my meals, weigh out my milk allowance etc

I'm an evening eater and have a sweet tooth. Cadbury's chocolate eclairs - the bags of sweets - are 2 sins each and Werther's Original are 1 sin, so I tend to allow myself a little dish of about 6 mixed sweets throughout the evening and suck them slowly to try and keep sins around 10. Although I'm allowed 15 a day, I try not to always use them.

I'm losing 2 - 3lb a week fairly consistently.

Slimmingworldnewestmember · 12/09/2025 21:05

Hi @Hatty65 Welcome! 😄

Great advice, thank you. 😄 I love those chocolate eclairs, although I am a diabetic.

Well done on your consistent weight loss. How long have you been on the SW journey for?

OP posts:
Hatty65 · 13/09/2025 11:59

HI @Slimmingworldnewestmember I've been doing it about 6 months and I've lost 2 stone which I'm happy with. I've mostly lost 1lb a week, with the odd maintain or 1lb back on which I know is due to me having a bad week and just eating 'sins' without bothering about them.

I'm going for slow and steady by not really limiting myself in any real way. If I'm honest, apart from cutting out toast and butter and far too much chocolate I've not changed much of what I'm eating. I'm still eating massive portions, which suits me. Instead of putting a slug of olive oil into whatever I'm cooking, say, chicken biryani I just put a few squirts of 1cal olive oil spray instead and then cook whatever I would have done.

If you are diabetic (and want sweet stuff) how about Werthers Original sugar free? They are half a sin each (although very small!)

I've got another 3 stone to lose and I'm happy to keep plodding on. This is something I feel I could just stick with forever - rather than the many 'diets' I've done in the past and given up on.

Hatty65 · 13/09/2025 12:01

Sorry - just realised I said I'd lost 2 - 3lb a week consistently. I HAVE done that when I've absolutely stuck to my free food, sins and weighed my milk. It does work - I'm just not always 100% on plan!

suki1964 · 13/09/2025 13:37

@Greenfingers37 and @NurseP - well done on the losses

I can join you on the celebrations - half a pound off for me , which was incredible considering the start of the week, then the totally disordered eating through the week AND the KFC I had Thursday ( it had been another day when it was 7pm before we got stopped to eat and the nearest spot )

So. I survived and feel a bit more confident for this coming week

@Slimmingworldnewestmember What changed for you this week that made it so hard ?

Im very much like @Hatty65 - I do not use syns on food ( emergency situations only ) My meals are syn free so I have the. syns for my treats - whisky in my case

That's not to say I sometimes dont fancy something sweet , when that happens, bowl of berries ( always have a bag of frozen berries in the freezer ) nuked and then topped with Muller light Greek style lemon yoghurt stirred in. Makes me feel like Im getting something that's not " diet food"

I also thought about how I wanted my weight loss journey to feel for me. I knew if I stuck to plan constantly, get the big loses, get to target, I would then just stop - and back to the yo-yo ing. So I settled my head and settled down to being happy for low and slow. I never gave myself a hard time for not losing or falling off the plan, I just started again the next meal. And now for me being at target , its about walking that fine line now every single day but its perfectly doable and I dont feel deprived or that Im on a diet. It's also true that the longer away from something the less you actually want it. Hence my bread fest last Saturday made me feel like crap where as once upon a time I would devour loaves of the stuff every week

I'm think about Slimming World but I didn't enjoy it much last time. Felt quite cliquey and almost cult like, with some foods weirdly demonized and everybody obsessed with FryLight and protein bars. I refuse to use childish silly terms like "body magic", "star week" etc. At the same time though, I need the accountability. Does anyone just go for the weigh -ins and the social side?

Find a different group

Im coming up to three years, never once bought fry light or a bar and I cant mind the last time I ever shopped in iceland

I live rural, the lads and lasses who go to my group are grounded and our consultant knows she's never going to be selling the products pushed by SW. Yes she has to mention them, promote them, but she's just as quick to point us to the local butcher who's sausages are " allowed"

Dont get hung up. When I started in AA - the best advice I was given was - take from it what suits you, leave the rest behind. So yes I go along weekly , I offer up my own experience, I share recipes, new food items that are out there that are SW friendly etc , I leave the rest well and truly behind

The bare bone basics of SW is cooking from scratch, filling up on protein and fibre and controlling the carbs and dairy. Same as every other healthy eating plan out there , only they dont count calories ( that's all done for you behind the scenes ) they give you syns - more calorie dense and easily inhaled- higher the syn value so it nudges you to make the change

What SW offers , what really works, ( with the right group and consultant ) is the support and accountability. I think because my group is slap bang in the middle of a very rural community where farming is the biggest industry, where we are used to buying food that we actually cook, Id say there's very few buying into the extra sales. Yes terms like body magic are used, and they are helpful to some, we all know it means getting off ones arse, But SW is about being inclusive and not scaring people into thinking they cant do it , its about encouraging and supporting and getting rid of the guilt and shame

My consultant even says - eat the avocado fgs , just dont eat it daily ( which you shouldn't do anyways )

Slimmingworldnewestmember · 17/09/2025 16:06

@Hatty65 2 stone loss is incredible! Well done 👏 I think losing a pound a week is completely sustainable! If you carry on that at, by next summer you’ll be at goal! 🎉
what day is weigh in day for you?
Thank you for the suggestion of Werthers. I bought some this week.😄

How has everyone’s week been going so far?

well done on the half a pound off @suki1964 🎉 sometimes it’s easier to go for convenience food when you’re out and about. I think for me, it’s usually when I haven’t stuck to plan or haven’t planned well, that I go for take aways. I like to have something quick in these days, if I don’t fancy cooking a home made meal. Like a chicken stir fry. Very easy and quick. (I make my own sauce)

talking about Syns, I tend to use mine on hot chocolates/crisps and stuff like those chicken bites. I get 20 syns but don’t tend to use them all.

How are you doing @NurseP?

it was weigh in day for me today. Another 1lb gained. So,

SW: 18st 6.5lbs
CW: 18st
First GW: 16st 8.5lbs.

I think it’s the lack of planning my meals, or just going off what I have planned and ordering a take away. As disgusting as it is, I had a few last week! I have been trying to fast and wonder if it’s even effective for me, given that I am often hungry when I go to bed & can’t sleep properly.
Today is a new day & I’m planning for a loss next week for sure.

Weigh in today @Slimmingworldnewestmember and 2lb off so I'm happy!

I sit down on a Sunday evening and go through the app, planning our meals for the next week and writing a shopping list at the same time. I then go to Tesco on a Monday and I'm good to go! I have tried fasting in the past and I just get hungry and then eat huge amounts of crap. SW works best for me.

Tonight is chicken and prawn orzo which I'm looking forward to. I am at home and do like cooking though (provided I'm not faffing for more than 30 mins)

NurseP · 17/09/2025 16:42

Hi! I am OK thanks, a bit picky thos week. I am tired amd busy and tiredness is such a trigger for me! I hope I've done enough to maintain or maybe even have a small loss.
Planning and prioritising is so important. Can you get some bits for the freezer to make some really quick meals? Frozen stir fry veg? Just tip some in the wok with some chicken or prawns and a dollop of soy sauce and sweet chilli sauce or teryaki and do some noodles? Or the chicken skewers or the sizzle steaks? Great with half a pack of microwave rice and a bit of salad or potato wedges and some frozen veg. Low syn sausage and mash with veg. Sometimes having easy things helps me not go for a take away or frozen pizza!

Slimmingworldnewestmember · 20/09/2025 11:20

Woohoo! Well done @Hatty65 thats awesome! And we’re weigh in day buddies too 😄
Your dinner sounded delicious the other night! I just wished my husband liked prawns.
I need to make Wednesday’s my day where I sit down & put everything into the app! I’m rubbish at planning.

@NurseP sorry you’ve been feeling tired this week. It’s so easy to fall back into bad habits when you’re feeling tired. I hope that you’ve managed to maintain?
I tend to eat fresh foods but then find myself putting them into the freezer when I opt for a take away! Which is what I need to stop doing.

I’m making a cottage pie for dinner this evening and I’m taking some to work with me too!

@Greenfingers37 How did your weigh in go yesterday?

I didn’t go… 😔 We’d been away all week and I knew I’d gained so chickened out. Not good, I know! But back on track and going to a Thursday morning group next week as we are going away-again! I’ve paid 12 weeks in advance so I’m hoping that will keep me motivated!!!

Slimmingworldnewestmember · 20/09/2025 21:47

Oh don’t worry @Greenfingers37 I’ve been there and done that! Lots of people have. 😃 I hope you had a lovely time away?

I’ve also signed up to the 12 week plan as well. I would’ve thought that would keep me on my toes, but the last two weeks it hasnt. We have just got to keep going. Best of luck for Thursday.
