Continuing Mounjaro...part 8

ObsidianTree · 05/05/2024 14:42

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
  • The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
  • Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
  • Boots £219 +
  • Chemist4U £179 +
  • Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

I've got my first pen, but I'm scared to start. Long term IBS-C, and am trying to sort the constipation before starting Mounjaro. Has anyone dealt with this, or had particular problems with constipation on MJ? 🙏

Posting again as I was in the dregs of the last thread. I realise constipation is a possible side effect, but wonder if anyone who anyone had chronic constipation has started MJ?

Scared of getting totally blocked up.

Pigriver · 05/05/2024 16:10

I've suffered on and off with constipation for years. Both pregnancies were horrific. I have to work hard to keep regular even before MJ.
One thing to note is that you are eating way less so there is less to come out so even if you aren't going often don't necessarily panic. I have a glass of innocent smoothie (fruit fix as not actually hungry) with a teaspoon of flax and chia each morning which helps, then some soup (ensuring the veg fix) for lunch. Dinner is usually meat and veg. If I am ever hungry I prioritise fibre.
I find I'm eating very few carbs which really helps. Many of us take an aloe Vera supplement but I've managed without. I've only taken dulcolax once in 8 weeks but do have some dulcoease if I feel things firming up 🙈

MrsBurtMacklin · 05/05/2024 16:16

Thanks for the new thread!

I finally told dh about being on Mounjaro and he's shocked I managed to keep it from him this whole time, but he's v supportive and lovely about it, and he understands why I didn't say anything until now. Phew!

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 05/05/2024 16:34

Thanks @Pigriver.

AgathaMystery · 05/05/2024 16:52

Ooo TY for the new thread @ObsidianTree

The scales moved today!! It’s been 7 days (not 11 as I thought). My weight now starts with an 82. Praise. The. lord. Well, praise Eli Lilly really

My NSV today is that I wandered about the city for hours and hours in the heat and suddenly I realised I wasn’t wearing any anti chafe shorts. This hasn’t happened to me in years. Maybe a decade? My mind is absolutely blown.

RagzRebooted · 05/05/2024 17:10

Odd NSV and probably TMI, but I think I mentioned back on thread 2 or 3 that one of my goals was to reclaim my undercarriage as I hadn't been able to shave properly as I my belly had got too big to see everything down there. I don't go fully bare often, but it does make certain things more pleasurable so I do it occasionally when I fancy treating myself and DH Wink
Well, last night I gave it a try after having a bath and finding I don't displace as much water as I did (I don't know what the volume of 17lbs is, but it was noticeable). I usually shower so hadn't noticed before.
I was able to see everything again!

So, two NSV which is nice as weight hasn't really changed this week as it's hormone week. I had lost 600g over the first half of the week, but with hormones and a curry yesterday, it's back to where I was last Sunday. Which is fine, it will go again. I'm just pleased to be able to see my own bits again!

RagzRebooted · 05/05/2024 17:14

@AgathaMystery great NSV!
@MelissaLouRocks congratulations on the scale victory and I hope they release you soon.
@MrsBurtMacklin I'm glad Mr Burt was supportive and kind about it. Mine was too, after I kept it a secret for a few weeks. No more hiding the pens!

QuiltedHippo · 05/05/2024 17:31

Happy new thread!
Went to a beer festival this weekend and although I've been ok with alcohol on mounjaro the bloat and fullness was crazy. Couldn't manage any dinner. Unheard of for me.

Attempting bonus dose later but bit worried about getting too much. Can you count the clicks with the hard twist method?

kitz90 · 05/05/2024 17:55

I’ve just ordered my third pen. I am curious about 7.5mg but have decided to stay with 5mg again.

I ordered from Pharmacy2u and paid £164.55 using a 10% discount code: TYBXQQ

Baldatbirth · 05/05/2024 18:52

A NSV for me. Despite only losing 3 pounds, I had to go and buy a dress for a wedding. I couldn't find one. Went into Hobbs. I've never been in Hobbs before because I always thought the dresses would be too small.

I found a jumpsuit I liked. Tried on the 16 (been wearing an 18 but I have noticed that my clothes are getting a little loose.) anyway, tried it on. It was very big. Asked if I could try on a 14. I thought it would cling. It looked lovely.

I am elated. Also alot poorer. But elated. The lady said I was very petite too! I can't stop smiling.

Rockhopper23 · 05/05/2024 19:30

Really keen to start Mounjaro & have read lots, researched etc. I want to keep it to myself, as everyone has an opinion (which i don't need, just support would be nice)..I'm in the UK, where is the best place on the Web to get it & the quickest?

TheOverweightFortySomething · 05/05/2024 19:41

Due my 2nd shot of 5mg tomorrow. I can see the 5mg has worked wonders for me. Down 3lb since Wednesday.
I don’t have big loses like some people.
Changing my weigh day to Mondays from tomorrow.
Lost 2st since January. 1 of that on MJ which I started about 5 weeks ago.

Take a look at the first post in this thread, there’s a very helpful list of suppliers with prices.

MelissaLouRocks · 05/05/2024 20:13

So sorry, can't remember if I added this or not!

CONSULT-BLOOM gives 15% at Med Express.

And I'm going home woohoo!! 🎉

Rockhopper23 · 05/05/2024 20:22

Thank you @KeepingUndercover & @MelissaLouRocks I've completed an online assessment with Pharmacy2u & got Mounjaro for £152 all in. There was £30 off with a Google code...can't wait to get started!! Can anybody tell me when I should expect to receive it?

Exitstrategist · 05/05/2024 20:22

Amazing. It’s weird when a size you haven’t been forever just fits isn’t it?!

They're probably just jealous of how fabulous you're looking. 😎

giraffetasticc · 05/05/2024 20:34

Decided to do some girl maths to justify the costs of reordering my next months supply of MJ.. been keeping track of how many times I would usually be ordering extra treats/getting takeaways and what I would spend on them over the past 3 weeks. So far I’ve saved myself over £60! So if I take that off my next MJ order it makes it positively a bargain 😂

even though my weight loss hasn’t been the most astronomical so far realising how much power it’s given me to make good food choices is definitely a motivation to keep going!

Justkeeprollingalong · 05/05/2024 20:42

What is an NSV?

Choux · 05/05/2024 20:44

Yes the food and other savings do help offset the cost. I think of it as:

The pen cost is officially for 4 doses but I use the bonus dose as well so that reduces the cost. So my latest pen is less than £30 a dose.
I am not eating junk, treats etc which saves money.
I am not eating out as much as it's a bit awkward when I can't eat or drink much which saves money.
I'm no longer buying Benecol drinks to reduce my cholesterol.
I'm delaying buying clothes unless absolutely necessary while I lose the weight.

I don't actually think it's costing much extra than my previous lifestyle.

Choux · 05/05/2024 20:45

Justkeeprollingalong · 05/05/2024 20:42

What is an NSV?

Non scales victory. Like getting into previously too small clothes. Or seeing your lady bits again!

guestusername · 05/05/2024 20:48

It’s costing me more in clothes!
