I have a massive amount of weight to lose (70lbs). This is obviously a long term project so after much thinking (read: procrastination) - I want to start OMAD.

None of the other diets worked for me (I tried Atkins, Dukan, keto, Noom, etc). I also have a 3yo and a husband who can't cook so making separate meals for myself is not something I can do as I also work full time. When I was travelling for business last year, I stumbled upon OMAD by accident (I was so busy that I genuinely didn't have time to eat more than once a day) and for the first time in what feels like forever - I felt GREAT! I had more energy, I was losing weight, I was in a good mood and I wasn't feeling hungry or guilty if I ate red meat or a piece of bread.

So I did my research, spoke with my GP and given that I don't have any medical conditions (and I am not on any meds) that would be an obstacle - I got the green light to try this.

My plan is: 1 meal per day at 6 or 7pm (so that we have one family meal), try to consume less carbs but no pressure not to consume any and once I'm below 200lbs (and body got used to the diet) - start speed walking (1h per day in the mornings).

However, what I really need is a partner - someone I can talk to, someone to hold me accountable and someone to commiserate with on bad days.

Hi, yes I'm up for trying this. I have around three stone to lose.

pinkieandporkie · 25/01/2023 16:00

I will weigh myself in the morning and start then.

LeatherSkirt82 · 25/01/2023 16:41

Oh that's great - I was already fearing no one will respond (brave OMAD) :)

I'll start tomorrow morning as well - had good results in the past so very hopeful!

Yes I've got to do something, I'm so uncomfortable being so fat. None of my clothes fit and I feel such a state.

Mimilamore · 25/01/2023 17:15

Good luck girls... I did this and lost 3 stone fairly quickly. I now have an eating window between 12 midday and 8 in the evening, in this space I can eat anything but to maintain my weight I eat very little sugar/ processed/ carb. Don't deny myself as I know how to get back on track if I get above a certain weight. Is a way of life now...

pinkieandporkie · 25/01/2023 17:22

That's good to know @Mimilamore. Sugar is my downfall.

An eating window sounds doable for me.

Singingtherapy · 25/01/2023 17:39

Ok I'm in! I've been thinking about trying this. Will start tomorrow.

LeatherSkirt82 · 25/01/2023 17:41

This is great! I'm getting very excited - won't overdo tonight (even if I am tempted given it's the 'last night of freedom') because I read that overdoing carbs can make fasting more difficult. What are all of your goals?

hi OP, I'd like to join too but struggle a bit with regularity! I may join for say 5 days a week. As a single parent preparing 3 meals a day plus snacks for my primary aged child it's tough because I am around carby food so much!! Does anyone have any tips? My DS is a super fussy eater and as we are veggie carbs form quite a bit of our diet (although he does eat veg). There's not a lot I can do on this front with DS food but the temptation to eat some of his food is always there!!!

ethermint · 25/01/2023 17:47

also what do you all do when you get hungry during the day before you eat? do you allow yourself a milky tea or coffee or do you all do black?

pinkieandporkie · 25/01/2023 17:59

@ethermint I will be having tea and coffee with milk plus water or squash. I can't do coffee black.

Nimbostratus100 · 25/01/2023 18:01

what is OMAD? I am willing to try anything

pinkieandporkie · 25/01/2023 18:06

@Nimbostratus100 One Meal A Day.

ethermint · 25/01/2023 18:20

@Mimilamore that's amazing! well done. How long did it take you to lose the 3 st weight on Omad?

ethermint · 25/01/2023 18:20

I have between 2.5 - 3 stone to lose. I'm a shortie so it's more noticeable!!!

ethermint · 25/01/2023 18:22

@pinkieandporkie I agree, a milky coffee is nice. I am going to try to do a few black or herbal teas or coffees to gradually replace the milky stuff when I am more adapted to fasting. Green tea is good because it's an appetite suppressant. I may order some nice jasmine green tea - in fact it would be a good inspiration to have some there - I may just order some now!

pinkieandporkie · 25/01/2023 18:30

@ethermint I'm short too, 5'4

pinkieandporkie · 25/01/2023 18:31

@ethermint I've not tried green tea before but I like the idea of it being an appetite suppressant. What's the taste like?

@pinkieandporkie I think it's a bit of an acquired taste but there are some nice ones around - Japanese brands tend to be more expensive but much nicer (Clearspring in Waitrose). Be careful, you're not meant to steep the teabag for too long or it tastes bitter! Just for a minute or so (look up online). Jasmine green tea is super nice, and there's a "roasted rice" or "roasted" green tea which has a lovely nutty flavour and a more rounded flavour which I really love. Sencha is a nice light mild flavour that might suit you if you've not had green tea before. Matcha is the healthiest - most antioxidants - and comes in a powder form and you just use a tiny bit but it is really good for you and super healthy. There are also flavoured supermarket ones you can get with cherry or gingerbread or whatever.

ethermint · 25/01/2023 19:06

@Keepfocused I know about the insulin spiking but I am thinking to kind of ease into it to allow milky coffee at first rather than have food as a last resort until I am in the hang of not eating. But you are right! I have now ordered some nice flavoured sparkling water instead as a special treat and hope this will do the job (zero calorie stuff). No point impeding progress if I can avoid it.

Lennox78 · 25/01/2023 19:42

Can the one meal be anything or does success depend on it being within a certain calorie range? Also is there a maximum time period for doing this ? I have spent years trying to shift two stone and it’s just refusing to go! Also does wine count as part of the one meal over the weekend…?

LeatherSkirt82 · 25/01/2023 20:52

I’m planning to do water, black coffeee and turmeric tea which they say suppresses appetite and helps metabolic processes. I found one which I quite enjoy so
hopefully it will do the trick. I also plan to use the FastEasy app as last time it helped deal with urge to eat when I could see the clock with how many hours I’ve already done and how far into autophagy I was. Anyone else has any tips?

OP posts:
LeatherSkirt82 · 25/01/2023 20:56

@Lennox78 i didn’t see anything that puts a time limit to OMAD. It can be a way of
life.
Also, I know some people combine keto with OMAD but OMAD itself has no prohibited foods or number of calories you need to keep up as long as you have only one meal per day.

I’ll start with just that and see if down the line it makes sense to test keto-OMAD but I do think that doing both at once may be too difficult and therefore, counterproductive.

OP posts:
LeatherSkirt82 · 25/01/2023 21:01

@ethermint I know exactly what you mean. My DH is very skinny and DC is 3 so I can never cook food that suits my needs as they’d need more fat, more carbs, more everything and then I get demotivated and ultimately succumb to their treats. However i
hope OMAD can help because I’ll actually be able to eat whatever they’re eating during our only meal together which will make cooking easier but also remove some of the temptation.
