I have a massive amount of weight to lose (70lbs). This is obviously a long term project so after much thinking (read: procrastination) - I want to start OMAD.

None of the other diets worked for me (I tried Atkins, Dukan, keto, Noom, etc). I also have a 3yo and a husband who can't cook so making separate meals for myself is not something I can do as I also work full time. When I was travelling for business last year, I stumbled upon OMAD by accident (I was so busy that I genuinely didn't have time to eat more than once a day) and for the first time in what feels like forever - I felt GREAT! I had more energy, I was losing weight, I was in a good mood and I wasn't feeling hungry or guilty if I ate red meat or a piece of bread.

So I did my research, spoke with my GP and given that I don't have any medical conditions (and I am not on any meds) that would be an obstacle - I got the green light to try this.

My plan is: 1 meal per day at 6 or 7pm (so that we have one family meal), try to consume less carbs but no pressure not to consume any and once I'm below 200lbs (and body got used to the diet) - start speed walking (1h per day in the mornings).

However, what I really need is a partner - someone I can talk to, someone to hold me accountable and someone to commiserate with on bad days.

Well I'm on day one and haven't eaten yet. I'm starvatious! Think dinner might be *quite early this evening Grin

LeatherSkirt82 · 24/02/2023 16:00

@SpaceOpera - you've got this! Think how good you'll feel about it if you wait until your 'window'!!!

@tatteddear as long as you have one 'window' that you keep to - it is whatever suits your body the best. I chose dinner partly for family reasons but also because that's when I'm most hungry normally and I know that having lunch would not remove the craving at dinner time.

OP posts:
tatteddear · 24/02/2023 16:05

How long can the window be? Grin

SpaceOpera · 24/02/2023 16:19

Whatever it reasonably takes for one meal, otherwise you’re approaching Intermittent Fasting, where the window can vary 4 hrs, 6 hrs etc.

SpaceOpera · 25/02/2023 00:46

Today I stayed within the window.

Exercise: 9k run.

Onwards and upwards! 😀

ethermint · 25/02/2023 13:02

family celebration here the last couple of days so had a little break from the fasting regime! But back on the wagon tomorrow. It's all good! Well done everyone else!!

tatteddear · 25/02/2023 16:04

I have done alright so far-day two. Was starving yesterday by dinner time but ate a Normal size well balanced meal (sort of Korean stew thing with lots of veg and some brown rice.
I don't feel hungry at all today which is weird.
No real exercise as haven't had time but planning a decent 7 mile walk for tomorrow.

SpaceOpera · 25/02/2023 23:31

@tatteddear nice to hear from you on progress.

Week 1 day 4 progress report:

Meal: within 2-hour window
Exercise: 3.8 mile hill walk with an elevation equal to 45 floors (although I still have to work out how the app measures a ‘floor’)
10 sets of 10 pushups
10 sets of 20 crunchies (I want to lose fat and add strength and muscle tone)

Physical benefits so far: running leggings are not cutting into my belly flab: I think my stomach bloat has decreased. I feel more comfortable in the stomach area in general.

Mental benefits so far: Realised how often I eat out of boredom. I have a daily schedule of what to do when, and if I stick to this daily discipline, it will set me free from eating out of stress or boredom.

Good luck to all. Do share your progress!

Hello lovelies ! I am just gonna start this tomorrow. As anyone got any top tips?

Going to eat 5-8pm.

I am thinking coffee, Korean beef soup, fizzy water when it gets too much. But I am just to just snacking on apples and pickles.

how are you finding it?

ethermint · 26/02/2023 09:51

@TrevorOptions Welcome! apart from fizzy water, green tea is good for preventing hunger and ok to drink as low calories (it also burns fat). Matcha is the healthiest form.

What do you mean about snacking on apples and pickles - are you doing this during the non-fasting window?

How much do you have to lose?

Also another tip is work up to longer periods if you can't manage a full day immediately. Sometimes it takes the body a while to get used to it!

The reddit here is great for inspo:

Good luck.!!

Hey everyone- quick update - it’s like Christmas here!!! I can fit into size 14 and I haven’t been able to do so in the last 5y. I can hardly believe it and mostly just want to cry with happiness.

im also finding that now when I get hungry - I go and try on something that I can ‘almost’ fit. Starting exercise tomorrow as I’m now below the threshold I set for that! (I needed to lose some weight to start exercising properly because of an old knee injury that doesn’t tolerate strain when too heavy).

glad to hear everyone else is doing well too!

@ethermint thanks re real tip.

@LeatherSkirt82 — im also finding that now when I get hungry - I go and try on something that I can ‘almost’ fit.

genius !!!!!

I don’t have much to lose luckily, I just need to fit back into my work trousers as I HATE trousers shopping - am short. Also am 48 so might take me a while.

TakeYourHatOffBoy · 26/02/2023 14:06

This morning I was under 12st for the first time in...a long time. Such a relief to be back in the fasting groove and seeing results.

I did consider doing a longer (36 hr) fast this weekend as DH has been away, but by yesterday evening I was feeling a bit ropey so did have a small dinner instead. Wasn't going to.push through feeling rough - this isn't an endurance test after all!

@TrevorOptions whilst the Korean beef soup sounds absolutely delicious, I'm not sure if it would work in the fasting window - is it like bone broth? The fasting period should really be zero-calorie otherwise you are potentially stimulating an insulin response. I stick to black coffee, plain (not flavoured) green tea and water. And snacking, even on apples and pickles, is out completely, I'm afraid!

TakeYourHatOffBoy · 26/02/2023 14:09

It does take a while to build up to it - don't force yourself to do OMAD at the start if it's too much. You could start with an eating window of 4-6 hours and take it from there, perhaps?

TrevorOptions · 26/02/2023 14:42

Thanks @TakeYourHatOffBoy re the soup. It’s like a powder, but I take your point. It def has some calories! I think I’ll start by aiming for 8pm-5pm but if I am dying at 3pm then will have the soup.

very inspiring thread ! Thanks all.

ethermint · 26/02/2023 14:49

@LeatherSkirt82 amazing news, keep going! Despite a food and drink filled weekend i found my dress less tight today. So that's a bonus! I have some serious catching up to do the next few days tho!! May try for a 48hrs or even a 72, that could be wishful thinking tho lol.

SpaceOpera · 27/02/2023 01:24

Day 5

Exercise today: 6 mile walk
Forgot about the time and was offered some mochi after lunch - so the eating window was 2.5 hours today. Nothing major though.

Had a spoonful of what I was cooking this evening, to taste for salt. Nothing to write home about, but just recording all the little things here.

To all those seeing results - it’s great to read and hold in mind. Thank you!

LeatherSkirt82 · 27/02/2023 07:19

@ethermint , I did find that once I was past the first week of OMAD, I kept losing weight even on days I ‘transgressed’. Keep it going - very happy to hear your results!

@TrevorOptions , try turmeric or green tea when you get hungry! Turmeric tea suppresses appetite and Pukka one also tastes nice compared to other ones I tried!

@SpaceOpera im so envious of your exercise routine! You’ll be there before you know it with that and OMAD.

Starting exercise today - treadmill, fast walking for an hour with intervals as I used to do. Aiming for around 7k steps during that hour. Maybe if I’m brave enough, I’ll start sit-ups and plank from tomorrow too!

ethermint · 27/02/2023 09:46

@LeatherSkirt82 that's good that you kept losing weight on bad days, your metabolism must have kicked in!!

I think my in between meals have been less than ideal, so if I can find a way to make them healthier (maybe more keto style) that might help me a bit more. I'm on 36hrs so far, my mad weekend of wild abandon on food has meant I am a lot less hungry today. Aiming for 48, possibly longer this time (with electrolytes of course). Got some serious carbs to burn off!!

ethermint · 27/02/2023 09:58

Does anyone feel like their food habits are being changed from within? It's weird. I cooked roast spuds for my family yesterday but had no desire to eat one (usually I would polish them off!). They've also been delving into cake and biscuits, but again I've not had a desire to eat them - usually I would be frothing at the mouth!! I guess my habits are changing! I'm not yet perfect but I think all the witholding food and putting off till later is starting to change my brain a bit and recognise cravings vs hunger. I always reach for food in stressful times but had a bad moment yesterday and let it pass without going for the carbs!

ethermint · 27/02/2023 10:01

And another thing - I am spending WAY less on groceries! And finding it difficult to polish off the food that I have shopped for...! I will need to seriously cut back on how much I buy from the shops. My fridge is remaining full for many days instead of a couple after a shop! That is a definite bonus!

Anyone else finding this?

LeatherSkirt82 · 27/02/2023 10:37

@ethermint - yes! I am finding that my cravings are moving towards greens and away from carbs. I am looking forward to my portion of salad more than I am to my handful of rice or a piece of bread. And yes, I am less hungry during the day and not reaching for food when feeling bad. When I do feel hungry - I'm eyeing an apple rather than a cookie.

tatteddear · 27/02/2023 10:45

Congrats on your size 14 @leatherskirt!

I'm doing ok I think. Eating when yesterday was 5.30pm to 7 during which I did in fairness eat a full roast dinner washed down with a glass of wine. So not ideal intake but still less by far than what I was eating before and I didn't feel too and doing it. Did my ling walk in the morning too.

On day three and I feel a bit lighter in my body (havent weighed so don't know if that translates on the scale-I doubt it after three days!). The only real issue is that I feel really thirsty all the time. Drinking so much water - but that can't be a bad thing really.

Off for an hours walk now then will be painting and decorating all afternoon-not exercise per se but I ache like I've done a marathon gym session afterwards nevertheless.

SpaceOpera · 27/02/2023 14:07

@tatteddear “…a full roast dinner washed down with a glass of wine. So not ideal intake…”

Somewhat indignant on behalf of the full roast! 😉

Seriously though, what is not ideal about it?

WiltingLobelia · 27/02/2023 14:58

Oh I did not know there was a thread!!

I have been doing OMAD for about 4 weeks. I started at 12 stone 10 and plan to weigh in on Friday.

This past few days i have found it hard so have had 2 meals yesterday and today but back to proper OMAD tomorrow.

I'd love to join if I may!
