@Mildmanneredmum

Hi.
I don't have any parents as I am in my 50s. Some of my friends support me but my son does not. He feels it is a high risk for me. I nearly died of pneumonia in 2015 so until I have my screening I have no idea if my consultant will support it. I have RA.

Some slim friends have been dismissive. They are quite high maintainance, wealthy and not a addicted to over eating and drinking.
Personally I think it has to cone from you. Read lots and ask around. I have had two personal recommendations. One NHS the other private.

MagentaRocks · 19/01/2022 20:30

Good luck to those awaiting surgery.

I posted earlier saying I was considering a gastric balloon. I looked into it and had an online consultation and decided it isn’t for me. I think I might have been a bit hasty discounting a band or sleeve. Part of the reason I thought about the balloon was that I thought I could do it with only my husband knowing. If I have a band or sleeve I really need to tell my parents. I am going to speak to them soon and see what they think. Part of me is scared to, not that they will be horrible about it but it just feels such a big thing and I know they will worry if I have it done.

If I do it, then it will be in the UK and likely not to be for another 6 months due to work commitments but I am doing lots of research and thinking about it a lot.

SavBbunny · 20/01/2022 06:32

@MagentaRocks

I am taking my time too. I am going the UK route and that means pre surgery consultations, counselling etc.
I have given up the grape to reduce my liver and it is helping my weight.
I am not a fan of very low calorie diets but I can stick to slimming world type eating. I am home for a bit before starting a new job so doing lots of research.

Good luck @Brindille

Im 3 months out and lost 40 pounds. My BMI wasn’t huge but I had binge eating disorder and wanted to die. I haven’t/can’t binge since my day of surgery and it was the best descion I ever made.

I had Dr Tamer in Egypt and he was amazing

SavBbunny · 20/01/2022 18:45

@PeggyGa

Hi, i have been recommended to Dr Tamer. How long before you went back to work?

PeggyGa · 20/01/2022 18:51

Under 2 weeks. I had the op on the Tuesday, had a couple of days sightseeing then flew home Sunday. I was absolutely fine. It’s just getting used to gearing your fluids right and starting to eat soft foods.

It’s fine, I could have gone back to work on day 4 I felt great

sobercuriouskind · 24/01/2022 02:36

Hello, I've been reading up about Dr Tamer, lots of good reviews. Can I ask how much you paid? 10K for UK surgery is eye watering.

SavBbunny · 24/01/2022 07:01

@sobercuriouskind

Hi I am considering Dr Tamer and recently had a quote of £2800 plus flights.

Brindille · 26/01/2022 17:01

I just thought I'd come back and update. I had my gastric sleeve on Friday, so I'm 5 days post op at the moment.

The surgery itself was fine. I had a bit of a rough time with the anaesthetic but that was short lived at least.

I came home on Sunday. I am able to drink enough to keep myself hydrated. I am finding hot drinks MUCH easier than cold, so I'm living on tea at the moment.

My surgeon recommends going straight to purées, so that's what I'm on now. I am able to eat and enjoy a small amount of food. I haven't vomited at all (yet - I'm sure I will at some point!)

My incisions are all clean and don't hurt apart from the bigger one which they used to remove my stomach, which is quite bruised and tender.

But I'm up and about and walking a little way each day.

So overall, it definitely definitely isn't easy. But it is manageable and I feel like I can cope with it.

Best of luck to all of you still waiting for your surgery.

MagentaRocks · 26/01/2022 19:19

Glad to hear you are ok @Brindille it’s good to know it isn’t too hard.

I have definitely decided against the balloon and I am looking at having a sleeve at the beginning of March. I just need to sort out leave and get a summary from my doctor. My husband is on board and I spoke to my Mum and Dad today. They are ok with me doing it. It took me a few days to pluck up the courage to speak to them about it. I had an eye procedure so was staying with them to recover so my dogs didn’t whack my eyes.

I then emailed the bariatric group that I have been in contact with and they called me back and gave me a few dates, now I have decided to go for it I just want it done. It is a lot of money but I am miserable as I am. I don’t have anything to be miserable about apart from my weight so I need to do something. Hopefully I will have something booked in by the end of the week, or Monday at the latest. It is scary but it needs to be done. I just have to wean myself off Diet Coke now.

MrMrsJones · 27/01/2022 16:45

a week and a half till I fly out and have surgery

A friend of mine is 3 stone down in 2 months and lost 4 dress sizes

BecR89 · 27/01/2022 17:02

I'm sorry this has probably been asked a million times but I'm new here. Does anyone have any experience on the nhs route? I'm devastated that I can't afford private and due to family abroad isn't an option

pcosstruggler · 28/01/2022 07:56

Got my sleeve booked in for the 16th March. Very nervous now.

muddyone1968 · 28/01/2022 13:21

Hope it has gone well pcosstruggler.

I've got an appointment with Chris Pring at Streamline on the 10th Feb. Very nervous and haven't shared with anyone else yet.

BecR89 · 28/01/2022 13:57

Does anyone know if you can have weight loss surgery if you are taking antidepressants?

MrMrsJones · 28/01/2022 17:50

I don't know why it would affect you having surgery.

I had to send a list of medication to the doctor, along with weight, height, age and any issues.

BecR89 · 28/01/2022 18:22

Thank you. I think just because they mention psychological assessments I just worried that they might refuse for this reason

SavBbunny · 28/01/2022 18:40

@BecR89

I am going the NHS route and you meet with a psychiatric professional to access your expectations. They need to assess if you understand the food changes are for life. I don't think they are going to dismiss you for anti anxiety medication.

That's great thanks for this. I think I'm going to end up private. My anxiety is caused by my weight anyway and apparently the wait is about 3 years on the nhs. I hope it's going well for you

veevee04 · 28/01/2022 19:57
