Hello & Welcome 😊 WOW 😯 June already! What a start to meteorological Summer; stunning weather and easing of Lockdown.

Firstly a massive Thank You to @SunshineCake who has done a stellar job in taking charge of May’s thread 🙏🌟❤️. I was happy for sunshine to carry on but she kindly invited me back to start the new month, so we agreed to make it a joint effort. (I’m still battling ill health and will post when I can).

This thread is for those of us who enjoy healthy eating, exercising and feeling motivated to reach (or maintain) a healthy weight/bmi. The members of these threads are inspirational, supportive and happy to share their progress (the ups and the downs).

We all know that if we eat right, get outside & move more your mental health will heap the rewards. Better mental health = better choices. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

There are so many enjoyable lifestyle options out there without the need to resort to extreme measures. Whatever way you choose, it needs to be enjoyable & sustainable for the long term. This is a long term commitment rather than a quick fix. I rarely drink alcohol and keep sugar to a minimum. I exercise by doing walking vids & strength sessions with light weighs.

As no one size fits all members need to follow their own way of eating. Nonetheless this thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

There is no shaming, competition or harsh words to be found on these threads. We are in this together.

Jump right in! If you’re not too shy, post a bit about yourself 😊. How do you plan to do it? What do you want to achieve? What excites you about your future self? Together, we can create a whole new you!

You’ll be glad you got on board this time next month 😊

Hi everyone and welcome @SpongeBobJudgeyPants.

I ran this morning then having a bit of a weird day as we have a workman here and I feel I can't get in with my normal day.

Ionacat · 05/06/2021 13:33

Afternoon all. hope you are all enjoying the sunshine and welcome to the new ones.
My back is still playing up but gradually getting better gentle walking is fine but running is still out. (I’m missing it!) Went for a walk this morning to the park with my youngest. Currently watching my husband put up the pool for kids! (It was supposed to be a paddling pool but accidentally bought something bigger..... The kids think I’m wonderful though!

Hi everyone, hope you're having a good weekend!
Weighed myself this morning and worked out I'm 4.5 lbs from a healthy BMI. Whoop. So that's my goal for June though maybe a bit ambitious for a 🐢.
Today I found some prawns in the back of the freezer so cooked them up with garlic, chilli, lemon juice and cherry tomatoes for lunch, it was so yummy. I did then follow up with a cinnamon brioche bun from Costa though 🤦‍♀️ Having homemade bolognese with a bit of spaghetti and a load of veg for tea and going to go for a run later when the husband gets in from a pub lunch.
Any tips for limiting excess at a BBQ tomorrow?!! Guessing just filling up on salad and avoiding eating too much/drinking!

Graphista · 05/06/2021 15:41

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants I've replied good to see you Welcome to the thread. Its good to have supportive motivation from here

@Ionacat sorry back still playing up but glad it's feeling better gradually hope you continue to recover

I'm VERY nervous about scales arriving later, fear I have massively underestimated my weight and I'll be in for a rude awakening! So simultaneously looking forward to and dreading it!

But I need to know so I know if I'm losing don't I? Urgh hate this

Graphista · 05/06/2021 15:45

Any tips for limiting excess at a BBQ tomorrow?!!

Full up on salads and low/no cal drinks

Limit sauces, coleslaw etc instead of coleslaw for that sour hit have gherkins, pickled onions etc

Is it possible you can take some veggie (I'm veggie) alternatives? Quorn and soya sausages and burgers generally much lower fat/cal than meat especially if the meat covered in marinades etc. Flavour wise I recommend Linda McCartney basic sausages and the mozzarella burgers but plain burgers are good too

For dessert side baked apples - cored and with a little cinnamon added wrapped and bbq in foil - is delicious

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 05/06/2021 15:53

At a BBQ I would eat the meat, corn on the cob, salads and leave the bread, pasta salads and Mayo heavy sides.

Stick to clear liquor and diet mixers rather than beer, wine or fruit juice based cocktails. I (very vaguely) remember the WW days of my youth, learning that vodka or martini and diet lemonade was zero points. Those were some messy nights 😂

Graphista · 05/06/2021 16:17

I don't think alcohol would ever have been zero points and corn on the cob is quite high cal especially if buttered

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 05/06/2021 17:32

@Graphista this was back in early 2000s.

A big corn on the cob is about 150 cals which really isn't that bad and you don't need to butter it, it's sweet and delicious without the butter.

Graphista · 05/06/2021 18:04

That's pretty good for a corn on the cob isn't it?

CocoaMojo · 05/06/2021 18:20

Those are great BBQ tips thanks! Alcohol won't be too much of an issue as we need to drive so I could earn some brownie points with the DH by offering to drive!
It's reigning myself in that will be the issue I suspect, find it hard to say no Blush

Just got back from a 5k run, it was hot but less awful than my Weds run, which is about as positive as I can be about it Grin

SunshineCake · 05/06/2021 18:48

Sat here with no power for the third time today. Had a shitty day and now this. I'm not wanting to eat my feelings though even though if I did I would need a lot of chocolate. glares at dh and ds2 plus a poster on another thread.

SunshineCake · 05/06/2021 19:00

Well done on your run @CocoaMojo.

swampytiggaa · 05/06/2021 20:15

I did a virtual 10k run this morning 😊 I did it as 2 parkruns with 2 different friends so it was a lovely sociable run 😊

Done fuck all since 😂😂

Food has been a bit hit and miss but I’ve upped the salad content and the amount of water drunk so that’s ok

SunshineCake · 05/06/2021 20:27

That's really good @swampytiggaa. Well done.

I took your advice and just did 9.16km today, after doing 12.49km yesterday, to give me feet and knees a rest and then I was going to miss tomorrow. We've had no power all night so I even thought of going again as I'm already fed up and now I'm feeling like I should miss tomorrow but I need the space as want to be alone.

That is jumbled as had to redo as lost signal and can't remember what I meant to say coherently.

swampytiggaa · 05/06/2021 20:32

@SunshineCake well done!

Although I run a lot and quite long distances a lot of mine are very slow and social so not quite as hard on the body. Was lovely to catch up with one in particular today… her husband’s cancer has returned so I think it did her good to be out and chatting in the sunshine

Graphista · 05/06/2021 20:37

Good to know on the corn I always think of it as a high cal veg and if I'm having corn I won't have rice or potatoes etc

It's reigning myself in that will be the issue I suspect, find it hard to say no

I think that's something we ALL struggle with to be fair

@SunshineCake sorry you're having a bad day. Anything we can do to help?

Well, scales have arrived and as expected I've had a shock...but not the one I expected!

In 3.5 years inc 2.5 years of living on takeaways, ready meals, pot noodles and pies and doing zero exercise I've gained...

5.5lbs!!!!

How???

Not that I'm complaining!

I was fully expecting as much as 15 or even 15.5 stone to be the weight I was at, mentally preparing myself for it.

So...

Starting weight 13 st 12.5lb

Goal weight 10 st 7lbs (I know that is still overweight but I think it's more realistic for me, I can perhaps review nearer that stage)

I don't have a time scale in mind really just to lose as consistently as possible, although I would like to have a significant loss before I have to deal with my gp surgery again!

That's 47.5 lbs so maybe a year is a realistic target time wise? Round figure, allows for the times I don't lose or even gain etc what do you guys think?

I'm gonna speak to physio and see if he can give me any additional exercises I can do seated/lying down.

swampytiggaa · 05/06/2021 20:52

Oh that’s a positive start @Graphista!

Might be worth setting small targets maybe 7lb at a time so you don’t feel overwhelmed?

As for sitting down exercising I use HASFIT on YouTube for basic weights and I know they have a range of seated workouts specifically designed for people with limited mobility. Might be worth a look 😊

Graphista · 05/06/2021 21:11

@swampytiggaa thanks for both those tips.

I'll ask physio about HASFIT maybe he's heard of it

Small targets is a good idea. Maybe 5lbs for this month? Just to get me started?

Thanks

SunshineCake · 05/06/2021 22:03

Sorry to hear about your friends DH, @swampytiggaa Flowers.

Thank you @Graphista. I can't talk about it as most of it is of my own doing with a sprinkle of dh grr but I appreciate the offer.

How lovely to not have a bad shock. I've no idea about time lines. I was 14 stone in October 2019 and lost 1.5 stone quickly and easily once I gave up all the food I was intolerant too. Going from May 2020 to today I have lost just under two stone so I am well and truly in the 🐢🐢gang, especially as I'm the same weight I was in December last year but I went up and down and up and down etc so it is taking a while but I've been in the lower stone bracket for a few weeks now so I'm happy.

Ionacat · 05/06/2021 22:23

No power @SunshineCake That sounds like a real pita. Fingers crossed for its return for you. You could always go for a walk or just very gentle jog as a recovery tomorrow so you get some time to yourself.

That’s a positive start @Graphista. Small is definitely more achievable, and I’m reminding myself this is lifestyle change not a diet.

My back is much better today, it seems that lying down and walking are okay, but sitting is not. So the plan is to do more gentle walking tomorrow with the aim of trying to jog again by the end of the week.

Graphista · 05/06/2021 22:26

@SunshineCake ok but suffice to say I'm QUEEN of making my own life far harder than it need be so you'd never get judgment from me. Hope you have a better day tomorrow. If you ever wanna pm feel free

Glad your weight loss is happening slowly is fine as long as you're getting there.

I was absolutely dreading weighing myself as I thought I may well have been kidding myself and had piled it on!

2 of my friends who have been overweight all their lives have over the last year or so dropped right down into middle of healthy weight range and are maintaining. One is in her 30's and the other in her 50's, different methods for each person but I'm in awe of what they have achieved as both had far higher bmi than me so I've no excuse have I ?!

I may ask them for tips.

One is a former ww friend and I think she went back there, the other was guided by an nhs dietitian as she has other medical considerations.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/06/2021 22:55

That's good news then @Graphista. I am regularly weighing these days, as I have found that the fear of having put weight on just results in a vicious cycle of thinking it's not worth trying. I use the Weight Tracker app just to keep an eye on it.
Has anyone found any difference to their weight loss from eating fermented foods, saukrat (sp?) kimchi, etc? Just wondering if it's worth pursuing.

fallfallfall · 06/06/2021 00:53

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants ;) i guess it depends what you do with the sauerkraut...
dh and i love adding it into pan fried potatoes with eggs for breakfast
dh makes a cream based soup that uses up pork ribs
and then my fave is adding it into grilled cheese sandwiches...
ohhh and cant for get frying it up with bratwurst sausages.
dh ferments his own, dd has done cabbage and mentioned doing fermented pickles. might be a good idea when they are available at the farmers market (prob a good couple months away).
hopefully the farmers are having better luck with their veggies i'm only having luck with my lettuce, rhubarb almost ready to harvest, and radishes! first time growing those. cuc's died the first time around bought replacement plants yesterday. squash not thriving, and one zucchini going nuts right next to one that is ailing :(.
