Best diets for vegans?

Juliecloud · 12/02/2021 10:32

I have put on so much weight since the festive period and lockdown. I really want to be slimmer. My clothes are too tight and I feel really self-conscious.

I’ve had success in the past losing weight doing the Cambridge diet, however I have become vegan since then and I don’t think I could do it again. What diets are good for vegans? Slimming world? Weight watchers? Noom?

Do you need to follow a specific plan? I’m vegan too and when I’ve needed to lose weight, I’ve just focussed on eating most meals based on veg with limited carbs and avoiding too many unhealthy snacks. Plus exercising a lot.

NoJetter · 12/02/2021 11:20

I am vegetarian but did veganuary and I’ve managed to lose 6kg since the start of January just by sticking to a calorie limit and making sure the calories I do eat are healthy and filling (cutting out junk mainly!) I’m having 1200 calories a day (I’m not very active due to a recent operation) and still having 3 balanced meals a day and snacks. I don’t feel hungry very often and I’m much happier doing this than sticking to a particular diet.

Fellow vegan here! I’ve lost 14lb in 5 weeks following the recipes in Dr Michael Greger’s How Not to Diet cookbook. Definitely check out him and his website (nutrition facts). Doesn’t feel like a ‘diet’ at all really in that I’m never hungry. Focus on plenty of fibre and veggies, no processed food, refined carbs or oil. Good luck!

I’m vegan and have lost 2 stone so far on weight watchers. Find it works for me really well

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 13/02/2021 14:12

I don't need to lose weight, but I thought I should make a pact to get healthier. So halfway through January, I started including more healthy food.

I said I must eat at least 5 portions of veg and 4 pieces of fruit.

So, instead of excluding food like on a traditional diet, I was including it instead.

I feel much better, and I've inadvertently lost half a stone!

ppeatfruit · 13/02/2021 15:05

Yes Something I've lost weight without meaning to a couple of times, so I know what works! Only eating fruit on an empty stomach is a great way to do it! Plus cutting right down on refined sugar.

I originally lost 3 stone deliberately with Paul Mackenna I Can Make You Thin, the title is the stupidest part of it! it is great because it concentrates on our mental attitude to eating, being mindful, when, why, how we eat etc. I still follow it.

Cormoran · 13/02/2021 19:30

Like PP have said, focus on the VEG part of VEGan, eliminate all the Frankenstein-foods such as all the vegan substitute, fake sausage, fake burger, fake this, fake that .
Have a lot of high fibre veg, nice big salads with fresh herbs,
Be mindful of how much 50-shades-of-beige you eat.

ppeatfruit · 14/02/2021 10:07

Yes Cormoran Exactly! Salads take a lot of chewing!

Juliecloud · 14/02/2021 14:05

Thanks. I don’t eat fake meat products. I tend to make everything from scratch and use very little oil/fat in my cooking. I eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg every day. My problem is sugary snacks and crisps! I eat dark chocolate and I make energy balls that have nuts in them. And crisps.

Slim Fast! I have been steadily losing weight over the last few weeks. I have a Slim Fast for breakfast, another for lunch and then a normal dinner. I’m not particularly hungry and the shakes are delicious. And vegan.

Juliecloud · 14/02/2021 15:36

I didn’t know you got vegan slimfast! Is that all you eat? Are you hungry?

OP posts:
HermioneMakepeace · 14/02/2021 16:05

I have 2 Slim Fasts then a normal evening meal, which I really look forward to 😁.

Juliecloud · 14/02/2021 16:14

That sounds similar to what I did before when I did Cambridge. I might try it.

I’m really happy on this diet. I think it will be easy to stick to.

Cormoran · 14/02/2021 18:55

My problem is sugary snacks and crisps! I eat dark chocolate and I make energy balls that have nuts in them. And crisps.

I think it is easy resolved. Stop buying and eating snacks, crisps, and making energy balls.

HermioneMakepeace · 14/02/2021 19:10

Three meals a day. Nothing in between.

ppeatfruit · 15/02/2021 10:03

Hermione The problem with the Slim Fast diets is that you have to stop them eventually. And unless you eat mindfully and healthily (look at Paul Mackenna for help). The weight goes on again (dh 's did anyway!)

I've never counted cals or been on that type of diet, I lost 3 stone with P.M. and am maintaining. It takes effort of course!

HermioneMakepeace · 15/02/2021 10:42

@ppeatfruit Indeed that is true. But by losing the weight you can then maintain it with a healthy diet. I already eat a healthy diet so need to eat less than I need in order to lose weight. Once I have lost the weight, I can go back to my healthy diet.

ppeatfruit · 15/02/2021 15:25

That's why I mentioned Paul Mackenna his (I Can Make You Thin) way of eating works, without any of the other cal.counting, weighing food etc . to keep you slim, not thin, I didn't want to be thin, just slim which suits me.

He gives lots of help about our self esteem, the way to eat etc. It's great because you can stop and start it without feeling you've 'given up'

Juliecloud · 15/02/2021 16:33

Thanks, lots to consider here! I’ll look into Paul McKenna.

You're welcome Julie Any support needed just ask! (I'm not selling it btw!).

Breathmiller · 20/02/2021 09:19

Hi juliecloud
Also a vegan here. After hearing ppeatfruit talking about the Paul Mckenna way of eating I started a support thread on here. Its been quiet the last week but there are a few of us getting off the diet/binge cycle with it.
You would be welcome to join.

ppeatfruit · 20/02/2021 09:22

Brilliant Breath see you there Grin

Well yes Grin What about 18:6 OP? I’d never really got diets and weight talk until I stumbled across it here.
