Contemplating bariatric surgery.... advice?

Hi as the title states I am contemplating a gastric sleeve. I am a serial yo yo dieter and my metabolism is fucked. I have pcos and have tried Xenical, saxenda etc- successful until I stop using and the weight piles back on.

I’ve seen an endocrinologist and he said that, in his opinion, sometimes surgery is the only viable option. I’d be paying for it myself as I don’t quite meet the nhs criteria yet.

I’m miserable- I don’t lose weight unless I starve myself ie 600 calories a day and then I’m even more unhappy. I’m worried about my health in the long term, but then the prospect of surgery scares me too.

Any advice from those who have been there before?

That's fantastic needtoloselots - hope it goes well 👍🏻

Sofasogood1 · 28/07/2020 12:10

Baby food is gross! You can mash up plenty of stuff and supplement with ready made protein shakes for a while. I lived on mushed fish with basically any veg pureed, sometimes with cream cheese. I ate Smash too which was delicious when finally allowed it! Yes that say avoid carbs like that but I've lost nine stone now so whatever.

Protein shakes - I had carb killer ones from Holland and Barrett.

For the first few months it's going to be trial and error as you see what you can tolerate.

Get some superdrug chewable multi vitamins

Seriouslyconfused3 · 28/07/2020 15:32

Hi guys just a little update- I likely won’t get rebooked until sept/Oct time. I’m gutted but there’s nothing I can do Sad keep updating on your journeys though- keep me motivated!

Oh dear OP. Did your sore throat turn into anything? Told you you shouldn't cancel! Gutted

Seriouslyconfused3 · 28/07/2020 16:17

I think it’s a sinus infection @Sofasogood1 I know most people would prob have just gone but I have a real health anxiety so it was for the best- just sad it’s such a long wait again

@LaurieFairyCake thats quick, time will fly!

@needtoloselots When the tests start, it's getting real eh ... when do you start your LRD?

@Seriouslyconfused3 Lets hope it's Sept & I hope your sinus isn't playing up too much.

Meanwhile, I had my Covid test today, made my eyes water but just a momentary discomfort. It's forecast to be scorchio on Friday, hope there's air conditioning!

Sofasogood1 · 28/07/2020 16:41

@monkeysandparrots I said upthread you may want to take a fan. Hospitals are always too hot and the windows never open enough

Seriouslyconfused3 · 28/07/2020 16:41

Ooh not long now @MonkeysandParrots bet you can’t wait!!

OP posts:
MonkeysandParrots · 28/07/2020 16:50

@Sofasogood1 you did, I had forgotten ... I don't think I have one, will check online as time to prime it before Friday ...

@Seriouslyconfused3 I am so ready!

Sofasogood1 · 28/07/2020 16:54

Wishing you the very best of luck!!

YenniferOfVengeberg · 28/07/2020 19:05

If its any consolation @Seriouslyconfused3 you definitely did the right thing. Sore throat = overeactive airway = much higher liklihood of respiratory complications from the anaesthetic.

Seriouslyconfused3 · 28/07/2020 19:49

Thanks @YenniferOfVengeberg just feels crap, but better than getting really ill I suppose

Just read through this thread and wanted to say well done to all of you for how brave you are.
I also have a significant amount of weight to lose and I’m starting keto tomorrow. I know that I have 3 main options for losing so V much weight (10 stone plus). Surgery, keto, or A lighter life type shakes diet I’m too scared for surgery and so I’m trying keto in the hope it works for me. I came on here to find a keto support group and read your stories. Good luck to you all with your weight loss journeys and well done on your determination. I love how friendly you all are and supportive to each other, I hope I find a similarly supportive group (amongst all the MN-renowned-Anti-fat-bullies)

MonkeysandParrots · 29/07/2020 18:48

@Sofasogood1 Thank you! Btw, ordered the fan, it arrived this afternoon & is already on charge.

@Seriouslyconfused3 Fabulous news, 6 or so weeks is nothing to wait.

@EightToSixer Thank you for your comments, so nice of you to say. Everyones journey is different and maybe Keto is your answer, I hope it goes really well.

Seriouslyconfused3 · 29/07/2020 21:06

Hi @EightToSixer feel free to stick around. I’ve got no doubt we’ve all been through every diet in the book between us so I’m sure you’ll get loads of support. I personally was successful with keto, just struggled to sustain it long term (I’m a carb lover very much on a budget)

Ooooh September's not too long @Seriouslyconfused3! Glad you were rescheduled so quickly.

Good luck @MonkeysandParrots! Definitely going to need that fan I think! ☀️

EllaAlright · 30/07/2020 08:12

@EightToSixer good luck with Keto, my husband did Keto and lost 10 stone in 18 months. Unfortunately he couldn’t sustain it and 3 stone has crept back on, so he’s going for a bypass in 2 weeks to the place in Turkey where I went for my sleeve.

There’s some really good Keto groups on Facebook.

EllaAlright · 30/07/2020 08:16

I’ve tried pretty much every diet under the sun, my best successes were with slimming world, I really liked going to group every week and trying to get slimmer of the week, I’m quite competitive by nature! But as soon as I took my eye off the ball, all my habits and emotional eating cycles would kick back in and I’d regain the weight again, and then I’d stop going to group, and gain more weight.

luckylady22 · 30/07/2020 10:48

@MonkeysandParrots

Good luck for tomorrow looking forward to hearing how you get on Thanks

Seriouslyconfused3 · 30/07/2020 16:10

Good luck for tomorrow @MonkeysandParrots what time do you go in?

OP posts:
MonkeysandParrots · 30/07/2020 18:21

Thanks everyone for the good luck messages, need to be there at 7am tomorrow so hopefully early on the list.

When it’s all over and I’m back in the land of the living, I’ll pop back on and let you know how it went.

Sofasogood1 · 30/07/2020 21:21

You're going to be absolutely fine! I had to be in at a similar time I think. Usual pre op stuff then in and out maybe around 11.30am? I remember feeling wasted from the anaesthetic but no real pain to speak of. Just... weird. As soon as you're able have a little walk and a good fart. Sip your water, and you'll be fine. Just think - by Christmas it's entirely possible you'll be maybe six stone lighter!

Coronacurls · 30/07/2020 22:02

@MonkeyandParrots good luck for tomorrow I'll be thinking of you.

I have a Zoom consultation with your surgeon at 4.30pm tomorrow so you will hopefully be done long before then!

MonkeysandParrots · 30/07/2020 22:54

@Sofasogood1 how amazing would that be!

@Coronacurls bloody hope so 😂
