Starting the no 'S' eating regime today to lose weight, anyone want to join in?

Hi, have got decidedly porky over the past few years.
I feel tired and lethargic, and none of my clothes look good anymore.
I also need to lose weight for health reasons and increase my (currently woeful) level of exercise.

I want to follow a simple and 'do-able' eating plan that is fairly simple and that I will be able to sustain ie hoping to lose 0.5 kg each week.

I'm planning to follow the no 'S' "diet":

book here

A summary of the basic rules is:

no snacks
no sweets (it's an American book so that covers puddings as well as biscuits and confectionary)
no seconds

except on days that start with 's' ie the weekend, and 'special' days ie birthdays and big holidays such as Christmas.

I've got the book so can answer further questions but that is basically it!

I'm going to be using MFP to log calories and I have also found the free NHS weight loss plan (includes exercise) helpful too

see here

I am planning to post my weight here Blush every Sunday too (but that is not obligatory of course).

The other reason for posting on here is that I don't want to bore my family and friends to death about it in rl!! But it would be nice to have some companions along the way Smile.

Anyone want to join in?

Well, as predicted last night went badly. Just stood in the kitchen and munched until I was totally stuffed (and this was after dinner!) Sad Blush Why do I do this!? It is ridiculous! I just need to snap out of it and go to bed! Gah!

Anyway, need to get back at it today. No "making up for it" just 3 meals no s's. Only 24 hours and then it's the weekend. I can do this

Hope others are doing better than me!

standclear · 16/10/2015 07:04

Are you "stress" eating Helen as a means of calming yourself down before bed after a demanding day? I do that too. Sometimes I get a huge craving for something sweet after coffee in the evenings too. I've found the only solution for me is to cut out the "association" totally ie the coffee, which is almost as hard tbh!!

Good luck today! Yes, we can do it!

Haven't had a great week because Wine with visitors every night. And more 'celebratory' meals than normal ifyswim. But I have been on my feet from 6.30 am until 11pm night most days without sitting down (except for meals).

I will be happy if I 'break even' on Sunday.

Keep going everyone!

Yesterday:
B lunch box 'crusts' and grapes!
L home made veg soup with crackers
S pasta with tom sauce made with shallots, lean bacon lardons, garlic, passata, olive oil, parsley and bit of parmesan cheese (trouble is I had two servings)

no other snacks

helen
Can you identify the trigger that makes you go into the kitchen and look for snacks?
Next time you feel like that, how about coming here for a chat instead? I am often on NM in the evenings, on and off, after about 9.30pm (UK time)

stand
Your suppers sound so delicious :) (Now sighing with boredom as I pack a salad up for work lunch....)

juliej75 · 16/10/2015 10:28

Hi, I know I'm really late to the party, but can I join? The 'no S' approach sounds similar to what I did to lose some weight over the summer - but as with so many others, I'm now in the process of putting it back on again and need some willpower help...

I'm only about 3lbs over my original target weight (10 stone) but actually think I need to lose a bit more than that as I was still quite wobbly when I nearly got there a month or so back.

Seems cheating to join on a Friday, with the weekend treats looming, but if I can manage today, it's a good start!

grumpysquash · 16/10/2015 11:08

Hi Julie, of course you can join!
Sounds like you've already done very well :) I'm sure the others will be on soon to say hello.

rivierliedje · 16/10/2015 14:20

Oh, the post I wrote seems to have vanished in to thin air.
Welcome julie
Thanks Stand

So far today:
B: porridge with apple, cinnamon and walnuts
L: hummus sandwhich, carrot, pear

Dinner will be samosa's I think, I'll be on a train all evening, so need something fun. And If I pack it in a lunch box it's techinically only one plate :D

Grum The Antwerp train station is beautiful, the most seamless incorparation of old and modern. And there's something weird and wonderful about the train arriving on the 4th floor or whatever.

eltsihT · 16/10/2015 17:18

waves at Julie and everyone else!

Don't worry about starting on a Friday, I have had a spectacularly bad Wednesday (allowable as it was dads birthday) and not a good Thursday as I was still at my parents and when I got home I decluttered the snack cupboard and freezer a bit.

I have had a good day today so far, just hoping not to get bored and eat tonight

Dh is in Canada so not around to go, that's not in your diet, which while annoying is helpful.

Today has been
B, toast marmite and coffee
L, chicken and feta toastie
D, prawn and rice fish cakes with salad.

standclear · 17/10/2015 20:39

Sorry for lack of posts, bit exhausted from a week with guests staying, who have returned today thankfully.

Just wanted to extend a warm welcome to Julie and say that I thought it was actually rather noble of you to start the diet on a Friday and not wait until Mon next week!

Big waves to everyone else!

Weighing in now as I am off to a funeral today and won't be back till Tuesday.

66.6kg last week and. 65.8kg this week.

Pleased it's still going down.

The one thing I am finding is I am actually feeling hungry, rather than just eating when the kids are etc

Lots of travelling on the train over the next few days so going to try to have plenty of water with me so I don't go hunting for the buffet car

grumpysquash · 18/10/2015 10:45

Well done, down is a very excellent direction :)

I've weighed in at 11 stone 6.5 today, 2lb down on last week, 4.5lb total since start of diet. (Annoyingly, my scales don't weigh in kg, but approx 75.0kg at start, 73.0 or 72.9kg now, depending on rounding up or down!).

I have had quite a good week food wise; I haven't eaten anything sweet apart from fruit. No cake, no chocolate, no biscuits. Still can't get rid of the late afternoon snack though....

I'm hoping that in the next week or two I'll actually see a difference in how I look. My jeans are straining marginally less, but that's about it so far!

eltsihT · 18/10/2015 11:19

Well done grumpysquash!

my scales tell my phone my weight and produce pretty graphs, I was last this weight in June so am quite pleased.

standclear · 18/10/2015 15:20

Well done eltsihT and grumpysquash on your respective weight losses!
Really good going!!

Will be back to weigh in later!

Oops, I kind of forgot I was meant to be doing the no S thing. I wasn't too bad on Friday (I was easing myself in gently ;-) until after dinner when I did sneak a mini-magnum with a glass of wine.

I couldn't remember though if it's no rules on weekends or if you just have to avoid treats? Anyway, quite a few second helpings and a couple of sweet treats. And I forgot to weigh myself this morning.

Not the best of starts! I'll weigh in tomorrow morning but more to get an accurate baseline as I'm sure I won't have gone down...

Well done on the weight losses eltsihT and grumpysquash!

helentheheron · 19/10/2015 10:17

Welcome julie Smile

Thank you stand and grumpy. Yes, I think it is stress eating in the evenings mostly.. Just the feeling that something is not quite right and the only way to block it out is to eat. The trick, I think, is to catch it early as it usually starts small with "just an apple" or whatever and before I know it I've had three bowls of muesli and 2 slices of bread and peanut butter Blush Thank you for your suggestion grumpy, I will try to catch myself and post here instead for a kick up the rear end Smile.

Friday was better, anyhow, and the weekend was ok. I'm working a night shift tonight so I'm going to try to be pragmatic and flexible with the rules without giving them up entirely if that makes sense.

Well done on your losses everyone - great work!

(I should mention - I'm not doing the weighing thing just at the moment as I want to focus on sorting out my eating habits and patterns and health)

helentheheron · 19/10/2015 12:16

All rules are off at the weekends julie so don't worry

standclear · 20/10/2015 09:49

Good morning everyone!

Weighing in (very belatedly) today at 83kg, which is a tiny weight loss this week and only a kilo loss since I started a month or so ago.

But, but, I am really happy because things are going in the right direction (albeit slowly) and really proud that I didn't put on weight last week when visitors were here and we had formal breakfasts, lunches, and suppers every single day (and ate out a lot and drank alcohol every day and even had Belgian frites and beer one day!!). (Plus guests were foodies who bought lots of interesting cheeses and smoked sausages and chocs!!) My dh put on 2 kg in a week! So very happy I managed a small loss!

Good luck with your first 'proper' week Julie!

Helen no need to apologise about not weighing in - it is definitely not obligatory and as you say, health + eating patterns etc far more important than number on a scale. Hope your night shift went ok (think that must be very tough from a 'no snacking' pov).

Waves to Grumpy and eltsihT and well done to you both again!

Hi everyone!

Managed to weigh myself this morning - 64.7kg and I'm aiming for 62kg. I know it's not a big difference but I know from very long experience that it could take me a while. But I'm determined to get there this time Smile

Quite a good day yesterday as I was running round like a loon so no time for snacking or desserts. Today and tomorrow are likely to be similar and I forced the last mini magnum on DH so I can't be tempted Fingers crossed, and good luck to the rest of you x

grumpysquash · 20/10/2015 13:41

Julie you are already under my goal weight!

I had 10kg to lose when I started.....8 to go. I think it will take me about 6 months. Longer if I drop off the wagon over the Christmas period.

rivierliedje · 21/10/2015 06:32

I got in really late on Sunday as the train was delayed. So was really tired on Monday and ate a lot of sweet things.
Yesterday was also busy. But I did go for a run.
Today will be better. I'll have my act together and actually cook dinner and go for a walk.

Well done everyone.

helentheheron · 21/10/2015 07:03

Oh dear, I have not been doing well the last couple of days. Night shift on Monday then entertaining PILs on very little sleep has meant that routine gone out the window and with it no s!

On the positive side, I managed to get to bed at a decent time last night, so determined to get back at it today.

Well done on your loss, stand, despite what sounds like a very delicious week!

standclear · 21/10/2015 08:11

You are already under my goal weight too Julie! Good luck to you too!

I have about 15 kg to lose. Like Grumpy I am taking it at a steady pace!

Helen and Rivier it is striking how much sleep loss adversely influences one's willpower. Good luck for today and the rest of the week!

Keep going everyone!

eltsihT · 21/10/2015 08:23

Monday was not a good day, unsurprisingly as I was at a funeral and I travelled from Glasgow to London and back in 36 hours.

I had canapés for lunch on Monday and think I now understand the whole eat from a plate thing stand talked about earlier as I have no idea how much I actually ate.

Yesterday was almost perfect but the kids stole (finished theirs and demanded mor my couscous at lunch so I had a small slice of chocolate cake. Managed no snacking last night so really proud of myself.

Here's for a good Wednesday everyone!

rivierliedje · 21/10/2015 14:58

So far so good today. Yes I agree stand about tiredness sapping willpower. I also think it's especially true for food, as you naturally want more energy when you're tired and sugar gives you immediate energy.

I did lots of spread out house calls this morning, so cycled almost 10km just doing that. It's funny how I never really think of the walking and cycling I do to get around as excercise. it was quite nice to be out, even if it is drizzly.

Eltshih sorry about the funeral. That should definitely count as an S day.
