Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:14

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Thanks Noel and Jacqua. I'll try and drink more today.

I haven't slept much the last couple of days. Last night I had awful toothache and I couldn't sleep lying down, so ended up perched on the sofa and eventually fell asleep at about 3ish I think. Staying upright seemed to make the toothache subside.

Could that be part of carb flu symptoms?

Thanks again for your replies. :)

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 10:09

mumat I think that's just toothache!

Jacaqueen · 09/01/2013 10:13

Good news Penny.

Green pepper only has 2.6g carbs per 100g. Half a pepper probably weighs about 40-60g so that is fine. Red peppers are much higher with 6g.

mumat39 · 09/01/2013 10:37

Jacaqueen, re the ipad, on the keyboard if you press the .?123 next to the space bar, you can get into the symbols and numbers keyboard. If you then hit the #+= next to the undo then you'll get to the * and th ret of the symbols.

Hth.

Jacaqueen · 09/01/2013 10:42

Thank you mumat39

Wow now I can do this Grin

mumat39 · 09/01/2013 10:47

Yay! Glad it worked.

mumat39 · 09/01/2013 10:51

Noel, OH NOoooooooo!

That means I'll have to go to the -scary- dentist man!

If it's an infection, can I take antibiotics in bootcamp or will I have to start bootcamp again?

I slept sort of upright on the sofa, as the pain seemed to ease off that way. But I woke up with a cricked neck. I also started my period, and have toothache. I'm falling apart. :(

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 11:29

Yes, you can take antibiotics on Bootcamp! Or at any time you're low carbing!

Sorry to hear you're in pain. Ibuprofen is especially good for toothache, but there are issues with this drug in terms of impeding weight loss, so try taking paracetamol. That said, it's more important to get pain under control IMVHO than losing weight, so if the paracetamol isn't working, switch to some ibuprofen.

Welcome, Penny! Your diet looks fine.

Have you put yourself on the spreadsheet?

And here is the general, week one, chat thread

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 11:32

hopefulgum welcome! To be honest, I think you're better off avoiding things like coconut flour, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp. Try and stick with meals that are based around meat/fish plus veg and salad - with plenty of fat.

herecomesthsun · 09/01/2013 11:35

Is anyone taking any supplements and if so what?

Lavenderhoney · 09/01/2013 11:36

I have question re low carb drinks, having noticed dark rum - what mixer can you have it with?

Also, I have stopped nearly with the headaches but my body has moved on to ( look away as maybe tmi) a very upset tummy. I am never off the loo. Is this ok? For a while I thought I was getting d&v having avoided it with the dc.

Also, am losing appetite - gave dh half my breakfast:) I really have to make myself eat, so how much should I have, or do I wait til I am hungry?

Thanks!!!

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 11:42

mumat39 how much water have you been drinking? If the ketostix are dark, then you need to drink more, throughout the day. If you're finding it difficult, try just sipping at at water bottle continuously, rather than gulping down half a pint at a time

bullet Knorr chicken stock cubes are 2.5g carbs EACH. The vegetable ones are 2.0g carbs each, as are the beef ones

I can't find figures for Oxo cubes, but seem to remember that I worked out that they were 1.8g carbs each (for the beef ones).

Your best bet is to trade up to the more premium, ready-made stocks - Sainsbury's Signature Chicken Stock is 0g carbs.

Sainsbury's Double Concentrated tomato puree, in a tube, is 14.9g carbs per 100g and 2.2g per serving - which would be around 12g of tomato puree or just less (I think) than a tablespoon

Lavenderhoney - when I drink rum, I have it with fizzy water, lots of ice and a slice of lime. Thus nothing artificial and only a trace of carbs from the lime slice. It's my favourite drink, if I'm not drinking wine!

Glad your headaches have stopped. The tummy could be carb flu, but if you've had the illness with the DC, it's more likely to be related to that, I'm afraid Sad

Loss of appetite is a classic sign of ketosis! Just eat something small for breakfast. No point forcing yourself if you're not hungry. But if you find yourself getting hungry later in the morning, then eat!

Thanks BIWI, I'm shocked that they are so carby!

bulletwithbutterflywings · 09/01/2013 11:55

OH, and I remembered another question! What's the deal with diet sodas? I see we aren't allowed them but whyyyyyyyy? I miss my coke zero and pepsi max are they ok after bootcamp?

GibbsGirl · 09/01/2013 12:19

I've got some black pudding in the freezer (it was off the deli counter so no package info), anyone have any idea how carby this is? Was thinking of doing some sort of warm salad for a lunch but won't if too carby at the moment.

EwanHoozami · 09/01/2013 12:25

Gibbs I LOVE black pud. Some makes are full of oats or rusk however, which can add up to being quite carby. BP is something I often pick up in a shop, check the label and sadly put down again, IYKWIM!

GibbsGirl · 09/01/2013 12:32

Me too Ewan, me too, especially with a runny egg. Ah well, will wait til I go back to Tesco and see if I can see the info at the counter then. It was a bargain too - was on a short date so I stuck it straight in the freezer.

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 12:47

bullet - we're avoiding them throughout Bootcamp as much as possible because they are full of artificial ingredients. And, perhaps more importantly, there is a suggestion that they could impede weight loss/encourage weight gain

have a read of this blog

OP posts:
BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 12:49

Oh, and re the stock cubes - yes, they are carby, but chances are you're using them in a dish that will be shared by 4 people, so in the scheme of things, not that bad.

herecomesthsun I take Berocca daily, along with a Calcium supplement, that contains Magnesium and a small amount Vitamin D. I also take an additional Vitamin D3 supplement.

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 12:51

GibbsGirl - I think it's off the menu, at least for Bootcamp. The only one Sainsbury's sell, Bury Black Pudding, is 16.6g carbs per 100g. I suppose if you were going to have a little bit, it would be OK, but as it's quite dense, you won't get much for your money, so to speak!

JulesJules · 09/01/2013 12:53

Ewanhoozami Oh thanks for replying. I have got the Rose Elliot low carb veg cookbook, and the Celia Brooks Brown one. Bit dispirited by the amount of special ingredients - stevia for example - that they contain. The recipes seem a bit fiddly to cook for just one person (as well as cooking for the rest of the family who aren't vegetarian) and I'm also really struggling for packed lunch ideas.

So far I've taken rolls made of Quorn ham & slice of Jarlsberg, celery sticks stuffed with Boursin and my usual Greek yoghurt but without the fruit. Not really filling enough.

I had never had Quorn ham before - it's ...OK, but I don't want to live on it...

Sigh. Woe is me... (see what I did there?) Grin

bulletwithbutterflywings · 09/01/2013 13:22

Thanks biwi :)
My breath/ mouth tastes kind of sweet,is this usual?!?!

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 13:38

It is part of ketosis, bullet - hurray! Drink lots of water and it should pass quickly. If it becomes unbearable, the odd sugar-free mint/piece of gum should be OK.
