Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Kracken - apologies for replying late - you may already have cooked it - but I have a feeling that the kind of beef you have would need long, slow cooking. Without that it may be very tough. But I'm guessing that you may be about to find that out ... Blush

janx I would be surprised if you are having too much salt. The recommendation about salt in diets comes as generally we eat too much processed food, ready meals etc... However on bootcamp you are eating much more natural food and I would be really surprised if you are having too much. It is important to make sure you don't have too little I think - salt in olives and cheese won't be too much.

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 20:29

Lavender NO ALCOHOL ON BOOTCAMP! Is your DH supportive of what you are trying to do? If so, why does he want you to have a drink with him?

I

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 20:35

Rollergirl1 - both of those are fine!

bullet you can go into ketosis within the first 24-48 hours, I believe

Taffy - how about if you put a couple of slices of lime/lemon in the drink? Or, even better, cucumber?

janx - if you're drinking all your water, you need not worry so much about the salt levels on this WOE. I'll try and find some info for you

herecomesthsun - yes, if your DH is eating high carb and high fat, that is a recipe for weight gain. So - cut down his carbs as much as you can, and especially the refined/processed ones like white bread, sugar, pasta. If you can, don't let him drink fruit juice and avoid fruit.

re tomatoes, I've often wondered about that too, but I think it's probably to do with their density. Certainly if you look at a tin of tomatoes, the carb count is quite high.

slatternly yes, it stands for BecauseImWorthIt, which was my original MN name. Everyone started to shorten it to BIWI, which I liked - and it's also much easier to type!

Can I ask if anyone else is really bloated? I havent had any carbs except from veg, have been drinking 2l of water although should be drinking a bIt more I think, but this feels like ive been eating carbs!

PennyHofstadter · 09/01/2013 20:39

I only started yesterday so it may be too early but I don't have any headaches or "carb flu" symptoms. In fact last night was the best nights sleep I'd had in a few weeks! Starting to worry I'm not doing this right but I hope I am as I am desperate to lose weight and I love a woe where I can eat cheese and not feel guilty about it!!

I've had total yogurt and omelette again for breakfast, small beef escalope (about the size of a computer mouse and 1cm thick), green salad, avocado, hard boiled egg and oily dressing for lunch, celery and cucumber with Boursin for snack and then the low carb bolognaise from the low carb recipe page with broccoli for dinner. Only 1 cup of coffee and 3ltrs of water again today.

I only bought scales tonight and so I don't know what my starting weight was although I imagine it would be about what I weighed when I tried them out at 6pm tonight.

Apologies for the long post, I think I'm just after some reassurance I'm doing the right thing!

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 20:41

janx Here you go - info about salt and why we need it on a low carb diet

OP posts:
MrsHerculePoirot · 09/01/2013 20:42

GibbsGirl I think when you first start you do feel full a lot of the time. I find it never lasts very long once I get past the need to snack stage.

MrsHerculePoirot · 09/01/2013 20:43

Penny that looks great as far as I can see! Not everyone suffers from carb flu - I have never had it, so perhaps we are just some of the lucky ones!

GibbsGirl · 09/01/2013 20:45

Thanks MrsHP, hope it will go down as it's very visibly boated!

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 20:52

GibbsGirl if you are bloated, and you're not drinking your water, that's probably why!

Penny - menu looks fine to me. Couple of questions though - why describe your steak as small? You don't have to limit quantities of meat. And are you having plenty of fat?

Thanks MrsHP and BIWI it was the leftovers from last night and there wasn't much of it left which is why I put small! I'm trying to eat more fat... The dressing on my salad today for example and cooking my omelettes in butter. I used olive oil for the spag Bol and had a whole avocado at lunch and some soft Boursin cheese. Is that enough? Oh I also had 4 slices of mozzarella. I'm struggling to get out of the WW mindset at the moment I think, its confusing how eating fat can make you lose weight!!

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 21:03

I know, Penny. It does seem terribly counter-intuitive, even dangerous, to eat fat, doesn't it?! But trust us. It really does work!

timidviper · 09/01/2013 21:25

kracken I sometimes throw beef into the slow cooker with a carton of salsa. The salsa has some carbs in but split between a few of you it's not too bad. It always comes out lovely.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 21:26

My Q

Will I have lost tomorrow?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 21:53

My second Q

How many times will I need to get up and go to the loo in the night?

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 22:24

Yes.
42.
HTH.

Ruprekt · 09/01/2013 22:29

3 times I got up in the night!!

3 times!!

All this damn water is going right through me!

No coffee for me today! or yesterday. Tis unheard of in my whole life. Am v proud of myself.

janx · 09/01/2013 23:03

Thanks for the salt advice. Have got horrible mouth ulcers ATM - have started taking a zinc and magnesium supplement. I am also finding that I am hungry a lot

timidviper · 09/01/2013 23:43

I take a multivitamin, CoQ10, Omega-3 every day and sometimes take a Berocca or Redoxon Dual Action for an extra boost.

As others have mentioned Chromium is a useful thing to take if you feel your blood sugars need steadying

DS has left some capsules here called Fat Burners and I am tempted as I have a lot to burn but while the green tea, caffeine and chromium sound useful, they also have caffeine in which is not recommended on low carb.

Womenandchickensfirst · 10/01/2013 00:07

Thanks MrsHP and BIWI - I'm determined to keep going. I was the surgery poster girl for managing my diabetes without medication, and I don't want to lose my crown!

I take chromium, a vit c (because we dont get much from this woe) and omega 3 capsules.

Right, now for my question. The impending snow has made me worry about how to LC in an emergency (if I cant get out to the shops/am low on pennies etc). The snow in 2010 meant I couldnt get to the shops for a week! So I am wondering what LC stuff I can buy for my cupboard? It wouldnt be for every day eating, just back ups in case, so I dont mind if its processed (thats better than eating carbs!).

Any suggestions?
