Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Only thing I can spot is peppers, they are a more carby veg, try cutting them out for a bit? But I bow to biwi she will be along soon I'm sure.

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 11:48

Grin Love the over-sharing on these threads!!!

The green could be the spinach?!

Your menu looks vine, although keep an eye on the amount of processed meat you're eating. EVen naice ham is processed ...

Have you been eating plenty of fat?

I don't think you've messed up. I think it's only day 3. Carry on as you are. If you're enjoying your food and you're not hungry - and you're drinking the water/eating the fat, then you should be fine.

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 11:49

vine?! Fine, obviously Grin

Ooh wedding dresses bullet how lovely. You understand we will demand a pic of you in your final choice on your wedding day now, don't you? Last bootcamp, some of us put a pic of ourselves in our "Xmas little black dress" up on our profiles, the incentive of that thought really helped me in the last week or two I can tell you! It might still be on there actually ... Eek!

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 11:50

Good post, mawbroon. It could be worth, OTTmummA, getting hold of a good probiotic to take - not Yakult/Actimel, as they are full of sugar - but something that a good healthfood shop will keep in the fridge.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 09/01/2013 11:55

Yeah, dh bought me some yakult which was sweet of him, but like you say, they are full of sugar and they also only contain one strain of bacteria. The guy in the shop I went to seemed to be really knowledgeable about gut healing and recommended Bio-Kult which has 15 different strains and was developed by the doc who devised the GAPS diet.

HumphreyCobbler · 09/01/2013 12:00

I have woken up much less puffy this morning, which I am glad about as I have to look at myself in the mirror for a long time while I get my hair cut Grin

thatgirlsevil · 09/01/2013 12:10

Hi everybody,

I've been low carbing since Monday and already 2.75lbs off.

Here's a sample of yesterdays menu. I've never taken a diet seriously before so just wanted to gauge opinion and see if I'm choosing the right foods...

B - 2 boiled eggs with mayo, salt and pepper. Green tea.
L - Tuna mayo salad with baby gem, rocket, tomatoes, cucumber, 2 spring onions, small chunk of crumbled feta.
T - 2 rashers grilled back bacon, 2 fried eggs, fried cherry tomatoes, lots of rocket and small chunk of crumbled feta.

Snack - Slice of roast chicken
Water - 8 large glasses of still, 2 large glasses of carbonated.

My biggest achievement is that I've totally given up Diet Coke since the 1st of Jan and I used to drink somewhere in the region of 2 small bottles a day...sometimes more.

I've just bought some greek yoghurt and the main foods I've been eating throughout the week have been bacon, chicken, tuna, avocado, rocket and tomatoes. It's smoked haddock and roasted veggies for tea tonight though so I'm looking forward to that.

I also wanted to know if I could make vegetable broth with onion, grated carrots, celery and veggie stock or would that be too carby?

This thread is totally inspiring and I'm really glad I've found it.

OTTMummA · 09/01/2013 12:15

I will pop into holland and barettes tomorrow, I'm not caving btw, just would rather not be on the toilet every 5 mins, but it shouldn't last too long either way. I had 3 weeks of diarrhoea in 2010 because the doctor put me on a healthy eating plan full of brown carbs, which really doesn't agree with me at all! Then because of my reaction they wanted to test me for colieac disease, but you have to keep eating the carbs, first blood test was negative, but showed inflammation markers but then I stopped eating it, I couldn't do anything as soon as I stood up it would start ip again!

Ilisten2theradio · 09/01/2013 12:15

Well day 3 and not feeling hungry yet after breakfast, but feeling rather lightheaded today, although so far without the horrid headache I had yesterday evening. I am still drinking loads and adding salt to everything. I can't beleive the amount of fat I am eating for a diet, so it can't be that.
Mind you I have just come back from having a temproary crown fitted at the dentist ( horrible!)

So how long do you thinkg that the lightheaded thing will go on for?

EwanHoozami · 09/01/2013 12:17

Hello thatgirl - you could reduce the carb count of the veg broth by subbing onion and carrot for shallot and swede

Doshusallie · 09/01/2013 12:19

thatgirlsevil - your food looks great. Well done on the diet coke!

Onion, stock and carrots might make your broth a bit carby - maybe use shallots instead? (not a cook so can't think of many other suggestions, sorry)

for all poo sharers - mine is often quite liquid and often green. HTH!! Grin It's normal on this WOE I guess is what I am saying. It will calm down in frequency, it is your body purging.

EwanHoozami · 09/01/2013 12:19

PS bullet and anyone really struggling with sweet cravings, you could try a chromium supplement? And can we all come wedding dress shopping with you? Grin

KerryKetosis · 09/01/2013 12:22

Hi, Rooobs here, do you like my new name?? The inspiration struck me whilst I was peeing on a Ketostix Grin

It's the start of Week 2 for me and I am 5lbs down and one inch off my waist. YAY!!

B: Eggs
L: thai pork mince thing served in lettuce leaves with mayo instead of dipping sauce. It was a bit meh really.

No idea what's for dinner, but I do have a cabbage and some cream...

Ciao for now losers.

thatgirlsevil · 09/01/2013 12:26

Thanks Ewan, Dushusallie...I will pick up some shallots and swede tomorrow. I've just found the veggie/carbs list so will be keeping that bookmarked for future reference.

I'll chuck the carrots in with the roasted veggies tonight and feed them to DP instead :).

prettybird · 09/01/2013 12:27

Have lost 2lb since Monday. Must get round to measuring myself before I lose too much more Smile

littlemissstan · 09/01/2013 12:33

Yay bullet, another low carb bride to be! I have made my appointment with wedding dress making lady for 13th April, a great motivator to be a couple of stone down by then. Enjoy the trying on, tis lots of fun (except the one shop where the sample was so tiny they just had to hang it round my neck to see what it might look like Sad)

Off for lunch - rocket, spinach, lettuce and cucumber with dollop of mayo, olives and a little bit of feta.

Lifeisontheup · 09/01/2013 12:40

So far today I've had one cup of coffee with cream and some full fat yoghurt and I don't feel hungry at all! Drinking loads of water and clothes feel looser.
The week end is going to be difficult as I'm on nights so eating patterns get a bit mucked up.
Any ideas for something easy to eat in the middle of the night? We only get a 30 minute meal break and the burger van is very tempting when you're tired and cold. Sad

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 12:42

Can you take a wide-mouthed flask to work with you, full of a low carb soup, or even a low-carb stew/casserole?

OP posts:
slatternlymother · 09/01/2013 12:43

Oh bugger I just had half a red pepper in my salad; just read upthread that that's carby Sad

OTOH, I have rid myself of all the carrots and half the potatoes in my cupboard by making them into a soup and feeding them to DH for lunch Grin Gosh, that made him sound like some kind of pony when I said I fed them to him Grin

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 12:44
Grin

Don't fret - lots of vitamin C in red pepper, so it isn't all bad! And in the great scheme of things, as long as you're not scarfing those carrots and potatoes any more, it will be fine.

OP posts:
slatternlymother · 09/01/2013 12:48

Yeah I know, think I might be getting a bit serious about the whole thing. I sad with my head in my hands and sighed over the pepper thing and my office buddy went 'erm, are you alright?' and I went 'no not really, I've just eaten half a bastard pepper and broken my diet'. He was like Shock 'what kind of diet are you on?!' Haha Grin

JustasmallGless · 09/01/2013 13:00

Thatgirlsevil- there are some fab veggie soups on recipe thread.

Also try this one

1/2 celeriac
2 leeks
2 Courgettes
1 pint stock

Fry leeks and courgette until softened
Add celeriac and stock plus seasoning - cook until veggies are soft
Blitz and add cream

Delish

GinotPrigio · 09/01/2013 13:04

bullet and littlemissstan Another bride here - hello!

Except my wedding is in 11 weeks and 3 days - AHHHHHH!!! So little time to get rid of this jelly!
