Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

MissNJE · 09/01/2013 07:47

I lost 4lbs since Monday. I certainly did not expect that. Really happy and today I even feel a lot better than yesterday.

I had cucumber with feta cheese for breakfast and I am drinking green tea now. A boiled egg is waiting for my next snack.

cocolepew · 09/01/2013 08:04

Thanks guys, I just need to chill out more I think Grin. My woo woman told me it is related to putting fat around your middle too.

Haven't lost any weight and would like a poo, but that doesn't seem to happening any time soon Hmm.

2 cold sausages for breakfast , couldn't manage 3, I like not feeling hungry all the time.

JustasmallGless · 09/01/2013 08:04

Well done losers- feels good didn't it

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 08:08

I feel so much thinner after a week already, I hadn't realised how much bloat had creeped up on me over December. I love that 'light' feeling.

Shame I still look fat though Grin

cocolepew · 09/01/2013 08:10

Oh. Scrap that. Don't need a poo any more

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 08:13

I'm glad you let us know coco, I wouldn't have got a scrap of work done

Grin
BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 08:14

Electric - when you say carrot mash - do you mean all carrot? Just be careful about that, as it could be very carby.

Pistey - you know the mantra - 'keep on keeping on' Smile Are you eating enough fat?

sybil - hope you're better soon presumably the virus is masking the carb flu though?

OTT - brilliant! Thanks

Noel - brilliant = 3lbs is great, even if you were hoping for more. Just visualise it - 3lbs = 6 packs of lard

1.5lbs down for me since Monday, which I'm really pleased about.

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 08:21

I don't need to visualise the six packs of lard BIWI, I can just go to the fridge and look at them... did I mention my DH has gone gung ho on LC/ high fat? Grin

No seriously I'm happy with the loss. Well done on yours, since Monday that's ace

prettybird · 09/01/2013 08:23

I did a lovely "mash" with cauliflower, a wee bit of neeps (swede), butter, sour cream, parmesan, salt and some nutmeg, all whizzed together and then some crumbled bacon stirred through it.

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 08:25

That sounds so tasty prettybird I'm nicking that one

prettybird · 09/01/2013 08:28

Felt really weird last night, with a really "active" stomach (so loud I thought it would keeping dh awake! Shock) and woke up a couple of times to go to the loo and then struggled to get back to sleep 'cos of my talkative tummy. Hopefully that's my version of carb flu! Wink

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 08:28

Lovely, prettybird! Can you nip over and put that on the recipe thread, please? here

OP posts:
JustasmallGless · 09/01/2013 08:28

Ooh pretty bird add it to recipes please
Sounds yum

I'm 2lbs down since Monday so happy with that

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 08:29

Well done Gless

prettybird · 09/01/2013 08:30

Ds even ate the mash - didn't tell him there was cauliflower in it! Grin

JustasmallGless · 09/01/2013 08:31

Great minds BIWI

herecomesthsun · 09/01/2013 08:38

Hello. start of day 3 for me. Yesterday

B: bacon and mushrooms, 1/2 avocado

L: cheese omelette/ salad

S: smoked salmon(I think DH did put some lemon on it for me, it was yummy).

D: ham with stir fry
also a few pieces of rhubarb fried in butter, with lots of single cream and a couple of drops of vanilla essence. No added sugar but there was some sugar and alcohol in the vanilla essence, so maybe I should not do again. It was still quite sour (I like the tartness of rhubarb very much though and normally have less sugar than most people with it).

I really wanted a sort of culinary pretext for having the cream which needed using up!

I got some almond milk from Waitrose yesterday and have been drinking lots of decaf coffee with almond milk in, which suits me v well. Only 0.2 carbs/ 100g! I have been drinking water also, though less on Tues than Mon.

I was down 4lb this morning, which is cheering!

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 08:39

Morning all.

Well done to all the losers. Amazing'!!

I have lost 1.8lbs since Monday . I am surprised given my avocado frenzy and the shameful mr porkys yesterday.

I do need o start getting to the gym. That is hard as I can only go at night. DH is generally not home until after 7:30 and who has the energy for that after a long day with a toddler and a pre schooler? Problem is DS. I can't put him in the gym crèche as he wails so much and goes mental at being left even with DD there. The crèche people have told me to try again in a couple of months.

So on that basis I will have to find some way of summoning enough energy at night to go.

Probably need BIWI to pay a visit at 8:00pm and chase me to the gym with her big stick Grin

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 08:40

Ahem. That should say creche btw.

EwanHoozami · 09/01/2013 08:52

skandi what a shame about the creche. Is there anything you can do at home? The shred maybe? I know how hard it is fitting in anything for yourself with two smalls needing your time, but I used to find that with strategic application of naps and cbeebies I could fit it in quite well.

herecomesthsun · 09/01/2013 09:01

I found Dr Michael Eades' blog v interesting.

For example, that protein can be converted to glucose and hence slows down the body's adaptation to burning fat primarily. So very high protein can delay the initial stage, which is why we are encouraged to maximise fat intake.

The reason he gives for limiting caffeine is that processing the caffeine in the liver will occupy liver enzymes and so can delay the process of adaptation to burning fat.

cathyandclaire · 09/01/2013 09:03

First week done. Waaaaaay slower than last time on Bootcamp but I've lost 2lb (probably the fluid I gained) and another couple of pounds of fat to go to get back to my old target but 4 to get to where I was before Xmas (and I felt great at that size)
Annoyed at myself for letting it slip as it looks like it's going to be slow coming off again. Enjoying the food though, delicious pork belly last night but going to have to take it a bit easier on the cheese to get back down again (definitely wore a footpath back and for to the fridge yesterday :( )
B: Greek Yog
L: Leek Frittata
D: Left over pork and braised cabbage

captainmummy · 09/01/2013 09:06

Coco - I meant to post before but this thread zooms along.... if you still feel like something sweet (and I notice you drink tea black) have you tried Rooibos tea? They do one with Vanilla which I've tried and find toooooooo sweet, but you might like. i drink ordinary rooibos black, unsweetened, and love it, and 6 month into low-carbing I find most things too sweeet.

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 09:08

cathy are you me? I could have wrote that post )word for word apart from your menu) including the cheese bit!
