Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Ruprekt Happy birthday too. In my family theres my aunt, my cousin & myself all on the 8th!

timidviper · 08/01/2013 22:13

coco Yes that does make sense to me, I think stress hormones may well be linked with sugar cravings. I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows more but I'm sure stress hormones are involved in fat deposition (they cause more abdominal fat to be laid down). If nobody comes up with a definitive answer for you I'll try to have a look for you tomorrow. I did a course for complementary therapists a couple of years ago which, I'm sure, covered this.

I hope your DD is ok, mine has had some issues and I know how it gnaws away at you.

PORK SCRATCHING NEWS! I have a pack (empty) of Hogbites. Ingredients are not quite as natural and wholesome as the "hand-cooked" and "seasoned with cornish sea salt" would lead you to believe but the nasties must be in teeny, tiny quantities as they are only 0.1g carb in 100g so a 45g pack is classed as 0g carbs!!
They are not brilliant but, as an occasional treat, I can overlook it. I bought mine at Tesco Express.

SavoirFaire · 08/01/2013 22:16

So sorry BIWI, I am a total muppet (re tomatoes). How I did not see them on the list - which I have pretty much memorized and have had stuck to my fridge since last May I do not know. I have been avoiding the bloody things. I thought 'fruit' and so assumed must be banned. What a fool. Thank you!

Allinthefold · 08/01/2013 22:16

Haven't managed to log on so far but am starting officially tomorrow.

Tried to start yesterday (and did well) but this evening everything went wrong & I finished off kids wedges & half toasted teacake.

I MUST NOT EAT LEFTOVERS....I MUST NOT EAT LEFTOVERS....I MUST NOT EAT LEFTOVERS....

Am off to first Military fitness class tomorrow.

Game on!

prettybird · 08/01/2013 22:20

Day 2 for me too. Have been really good with the exception of too many cups of tea with milk. Drinking loads of water and therefore also going to the loo a lot Grin

Two boiled eggs mashed with garlic mayonnaise this morning, avocado with olive oil and two rashers of streaky bacon for lunch and for supper cheat's shepherd pie left over from last night. Not much of "mash" left on it but it was made of cauliflower, swede, sour cream, egg, parmesan and crumbled crispy bacon. Had extra shepherd's pie base (the rest of the family was having it with spaghetti as a sort of lamb spaghetti Bol) - plenty of hidden veg in it (leek, celery, spinach as well as an onion and passata) plus cream and liberally sprinkled with Parmesan.

Snacks were slices of ham and bresaola.

Also did Day 2 of Ripped in 30 this morning. Smile

MsRinky · 08/01/2013 22:31

Thanks for all the Birthday ladies. I turn 40 a week on Thursday and am going to a fancy restaurant for dinner

Good day today. Ham and brie omelette for breakfast, brown shrimp salad for lunch, which kept me going ages, just as well as I was stuck at work on a deadline until 8pm. Then soy ginger poached chicken with spring onions and a few runner beans for dinner.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 08/01/2013 22:41

bullet about 2 pages back, your day looks absolutely fine to me. Were the meatballs home made or shop? If shop, worth checking carb count and also for additives etc. I get my meatballs from my local butcher, they are fab and he can tell me exactly what went into each batch and the name of the cow if I let him RIP bluebell

Happy birthday everyone!! Hope it's been lovely and you've all been spoiled and cherished.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 08/01/2013 22:48

B 2 low carb sausages plus small bowl yoghurt
L 1/2 pack broccoli and Stilton soup
Snack slice of ham and 2 small slices cheddar
D salmon with watercress salad, feta cheese and mangetout
Evening snack pâté

Hungry day today (day 2) I remember this from last time, but in a few days I will probably be able to drop the snacks.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 08/01/2013 22:49

Quick tip prettybird and everyone, shallots are lower carb than onions and I really can't tell the difference in something like cottage pie or bolognaise.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 08/01/2013 22:51

allinthefold my tip for you is ... Get a Labrador Grin I never even see leftovers these days ... Or think "it's more of a waste on my waist than in the bin"

Valdeeves · 08/01/2013 23:08

Cocolepew - sure you are right - every time my children cry I crave biscuits or chocolate.
Food is a total crutch to me - its my way of relaxing once the kids have gone to bed. I'll eat loads of biscuits etc. it's getting out if hand now as I literally eat three bars of choc or a whole pack of chocolate fingers just to wind down.
So - low carbing is great - it helps you really think about what you put in your body. I read somewhere you have to adjust your psychology (it was a giving up smoking but I think this will help) - you have to get your body to not want the carbs, to see how bad they are for you.
My problem is I am physically and mentally addicted to sugar, I am battling with it.
Breakfast today - buttered eggs with cress
Lunch - leftover dinner - mince and veg with garlic butter and parsley mushrooms.
Tea: chicken ginger, garlic stir fry with drop of oyster sauce.
Drinks: three cups of warm water and a pot of tea at Costa (it killed me looking at the cakes and not being able to buy one!)

Going to see Les Mis at cinema with hubby Friday - first date night for months, so excited and hope I at least drop one pound this week.

Valdeeves · 08/01/2013 23:09

And yes -I can't get off the loo either! Doesn't help that my pelvic floor is on the floor.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 23:11

Coco - makes absolute sense to me, and I suspect it's probably what's largely behind comfort eating.

Brianstorm · 08/01/2013 23:24

Today I have eaten quite a lot of snacks - feeling both hungry and light-headed
B - bacon and mushrooms (in butter)
L - smoked salmon rolled around Philly, celery
D - rocket salad with olive oil dressing and grated cheese, 2 scrambled eggs and more ham, some strained vegetable soup (DH didn't realise barley was a carb Confused
S - carrot sticks, ham on the bone

Also can I add DH to the spreadsheet? He was 189lbs at weigh in on Monday morning. Thanks!

Also had nurofen before I realised why paracetamol was always recommended - I'll not make that mistake again. Paracetamol bought for tomorrow in case of further headaches. Dying to weigh myself though Grin

Brianstorm · 08/01/2013 23:27

But on the bright side I have had no IBS symptoms since yesterday morning which has never happened to me before. Haven't had a either but I have none of the usual crampiness. Hope this is a sign of things to come!

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 05:41

Morning all

3lb off for me was hoping for 5

Have a good day all you losers

MrsHerculePoirot · 09/01/2013 06:43

awsangel yes the more the merrier welcome!

OTTMummA · 09/01/2013 06:51

Start of day 3 and i have lost 5.5lbs! Shock i am the fattyfattest in the group though
And TBH, I have had to force some breakfast down me this morning, i am not hungry at all.
I only managed 3lts yesterday, but will aim for more today, i have 4 big bottles lined up in the kitchen Grin
I had horrible headaches yesterday as well, sometimes the paracetomal wasn't touching it, but just keept telling myself it would be over soon.
Day 3 is usually the day i break any diet cycle so i am going to be extra vigilant and pre empty any bad thoughts that may come along.

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 06:57

OTT you're not going to break this one, just keep thinking if those lost 5.5lbs to spur you on!

It's not like we're deprived on this WOE anyway is it? I'm thinking of previous efforts of mine to do low cal- fat free fromage frais and steamed vegetables just Do Not Do It for me

sybilfaulty · 09/01/2013 06:59

Well done OTT! Great loss. If you have headaches make sure you are keeping salts up, esp as your water intake is high. Salmon and avocado are great sources of potassium as well as lo salt. Remember too that if you did break out now you would need to go through this again at some point so hang on in there.

Still not feeling great after the weekend's illness but am sticking with it. Happily feel too rank to fancy wine in evening. Looking forward to surge of energy once virus finishes and body moves into proper ketosis.

Have a lovely day.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 06:59

Um.

Not lost anything here. And sticking to Boot Camp. Sad and started last Friday. Bugger!

But genuinely happy for all you fab loser. Well done all!

ScillyCow · 09/01/2013 07:01

RatherBeOnThePiste - my weight loss goes in fits and starts too - didn't lose anything for the first 4 days but now am 6 lbs down 13 days in. Not as impressive as some other losers on this thread Grin but still 6 lbs not hanging on my body any more!!

Keep at it!!!

JustasmallGless · 09/01/2013 07:01

Pistey do you feel thinner yet?

Did you measure yourself?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 07:14

Oh bless you.

Yes I will certainly stick at it. Doing the whole 10 weeks. And I do feel a lot better for being on it. No doubt. Not sure about thinner tho.

And despite being a Woolly Hugger, I don't seem to have a tape measure. Well I do. Just not sure where it is!

Ilovemyteddy · 09/01/2013 07:16

Well done OTT Thanks
