A new thread for those of us who started in January 2012 and anyone starting now. Everyone welcome for support, encouragement and occasional arse kicking :)

Wow Cinnamon that is some good running.

My DH gave me a Garmin Forerunner for Christmas - already slightly obsessed. Went for a run yesterday 6.5km. A bike ride today, only 7.5km - I was working out a new running route. Going for a 5k run tomorrow - hoping to get under 30mins. Then my son wants to go for a BIG walk to test the Garmin! Should be fun.

MegBusset · 28/12/2012 18:09

Envy of the Forerunner, which model have you got?

5k today, and started the post-Xmas diet, having put on 3lb in a fortnight, even while keeping up the running!

chickenyummychicken · 28/12/2012 19:15

hi everyone!
newbie here.
done week 1 run 1 and 2
had a sore knee after second day(how?)
so have had 2 days rest and going to do day 3 tomorrow.
got no running gear - wore dd track bottoms day one but it was pouring day 2 i wore horrid fat leggings . if i get something in the sales what doesnt get soaked and Isnt ugly?

shithappensx1000 · 29/12/2012 09:48

Welcome chickenyummychicken!
I'd recommend getting running trainers properly fitted - they put you on a treadmill and video your feet as you run. It made a difference to my knees. I got mine at about week 5. I also got some running gear - leggings that support your muscles a bit (well they make my legs look a bit thinner) and a long sleeved top. They make running in the rain easier. I have also bought other bits and bobs over the last few months - it's opened up a whole new world of shopping.
My Forerunner is the 110, the grey and pink one. And I absolutely love it. So far I've used for a hike on the moors, cycling, a walk to the shops and of course running. Soooooo much fun!

cinnamongreyhound · 29/12/2012 15:43

Just looked up a forerunner and I am Xmas Envy too!!

Welcome chickenyummychicken!! I had dh's joggers to start with and a pair of trainers I got for £9.99 from sports direct. I have since got a pair of running legging, t-shirt and pair of saucony trainers (which I found a recommendation for using info from runners world and a youtube video about your pronation). Trainers were £40 the rest were under a tenner each from sports direct and I have a hoodie for when it's cold.

I've got Asics running shorts (calf length) and running top, Nike Lunarfly trainers (fitted at specialist shop) and an old hoodie.

jchocchip · 29/12/2012 22:36

I've been wearing Saucony trainers - I like them and think I will get a new pair soon.

Really enjoyed parkrun today - ran with someone who is a little slower than me and we managed to knock a few seconds off her pb. I have been recovering from a cold so was glad of the excuse not to push it.

notsofrownieface · 30/12/2012 19:53

Hello another newbie here. I have also done the first two runs of week 1! Just completed the second and well, not a good idea when I have been on my feet for 10 hours at work!

I am really enjoying it, although at 5ft 6 and 14st7lbs I must look a sight Grin.

Onwards and inwards!

jchocchip · 30/12/2012 20:43

Well done notso
I didn't believe I could run when I started last year - now I've done 26 5k parkruns :) Still over 18 stone but feeling fit. This year I am hoping to get the t shirt for 50 parkruns and I'd like to do a 10 k later in the year...

Another newbie, I've done day 1 and 2. No problems other than a pain in my heal, probably cause I don't have running shoes and I'm running in my walking shoes.

I'm going to by some trainers tomorrow.

One question - how do you time the runs? I don't like to use headphones outside so I'm not using a podcast.

cinnamongreyhound · 30/12/2012 21:18

I used the podcast and now Nike + app on my iPod. My phone has speakers so would have been able to hear it. I wear only one headphone when out for safety :)

went to sports direct and got leggings and t shirt from karrimor range and some trainers.
going to do week 2 day 1 today.
weighed self today
10 stone - which is 12 lbs more than i would like.
managed to half my 8 ciggy a day to 4 as well.

shithappensx1000 · 31/12/2012 15:23

Welcome all newbies. I loved the couch to 5k podcasts, I use earphones (except when doing a park run) so I just followed Laura (NHS Direct podcasts). There are APPs that beep when you have to run and walk, but Laura just keeps you going and gives pointers as well.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/01/2013 11:33

How did it go with your new gear chickenmummychicken? Well done on cutting down cigarettes too :)

I've just been and my first timed 10K (by myself nothing official) and it was 59 mins. Going to check my clubs standards and see how that compares.

Cinnamon that's a great time :) Even the thought of 10k makes me weak at the knees!

Did 5k today after a few days of post-Christmas illness/lethargy - helped blow the cobwebs out! Happy new year everyone :)

chickenyummychicken · 01/01/2013 18:41

i have wigged out and not run yesterday or today!
work tomorrow
i WILL go
my running gear GOOD
If anyone goes to sports direct - the karrimor clothes - the top was smaller than i expected - size up one. the leggings perfect - even size down if you are on the smaller end of your clothes size!

notsofrownieface · 02/01/2013 18:45

Well I had a snooze this afternoon and I must have slept funny because I just tried to do the final run of week one and my back started seizing up and I couldn't run through it Sad. Well there is always tomorrow.

milkybrew · 02/01/2013 19:28

Hi ladies, I've just found this thread and wondered if I could trouble you for some advice please!?!
I started couch to 5k in October, and by beginning of Decemeber I had run 3 times a week, every week and about to start week 6. Then I caught an awful cold, then the kids caught it and Christmas came along. The upshot being that I've not run for 3 weeks! Where should I pick up from again, or should I start back at week 1 again? I feel so unfit from not getting out and am cross that ive let it slide, need to get going again. Thanks for reading.

MegBusset · 02/01/2013 19:38

I wouldn't go back to week 1, I'd try maybe one run on week 4, if that goes OK do one run on week 5 and then crack on with week 6.

weblette · 02/01/2013 22:19

Oh how ace to see familiar faces :)
I started the programme in Jan 2012 and got to my second last run - a 5k Parkrun - where I managed to seriously injure my ankle :(
Since Nov I've lost over a stone on SW and NEEEEED to get running again so will be starting again tomorrow.
Really looking forward to hearing Laura's dulcet tones again and hitting the road :)

cinnamongreyhound · 02/01/2013 22:29

How did it go chickenyummychicken?

Hope you feel better soon notsofrownieface :)

Think I'd go for week 5 milkybrew :)

Welcome back weblette, well done on the weightloss!
