A new thread for those of us who started in January 2012 and anyone starting now. Everyone welcome for support, encouragement and occasional arse kicking :)

Looks like this thread is taking off again, well done returners and new starters. My legs still ache after Tuesdays run, wonder if it is because I had a nasty cold over Christmas?

yehudiwho · 03/01/2013 11:45

hello cinnamon I started the C25K with you all last year!, is it really a whole year? I carried on sporadically running- never quite made the 5K but run for 30 minutes every so often (about 2 miles in old money) and have made a resolution to get to 5k this year - back to 3 times a week , feel better for it when I get around to it

Happy new year and good running to you all!

yehudiwho · 03/01/2013 11:52

To all the newbies - it really does work- I have friends who still cant belive I run - 49, 13st and last ran at school! now even after a few weeks off I can just jog off and run for 20-30 minutes without a problem. And dont get hung up on getting all the gear- I started running last year in an old pair of trainers and jogging bottoms and still wearing the same ones ! I love the knowledge that I can just pick up running at any time and actually consider myself a runner (well jogger really!) - so keep in mind that whilst you need to keep up the regularity while you train , once you can run- well you just can, its mind over matter and knowing you can keep going no matter how awful the first 5 minutes (all down to laura!)

I still have the Laura pods on my phone and hearing the (truly terrible) music just makes me smile and want to run! I now use runkeeper for the cues and listen to my own music or radio 4

milkybrew · 03/01/2013 14:43

Thanks megbusset and cinnamongreyhound. Think I'll attempt week 5 run 1 and see how I get on!

MegBusset · 03/01/2013 15:03

Good luck Milkybrew :)

5k this morning (got up early to go before DC woke up), really enjoyed running just before dawn. Been out walking with the kids all day so probably clocked up another 5k but with lots of stopping to jump in puddles/pick up sticks etc!

milkybrew · 03/01/2013 19:09

Thanks for the encouragement megbusset! Just got in from my run, I was apprehensive as I've walked miles today-been a busy day with the kids! But I managed W5R1 with no trouble at all! Will get back to running 3 times a week now and hope to be running 5k very soon! Smile

SashaSashays · 03/01/2013 19:26

So glad there is a thread on this. As I'm fully embracing the post-Christmas health kick I started this on Tuesday.

I didn't manage to complete all the running bits, in fact most of them were a pathetic barely moving jog. I wasn't that much out of breath but my calfs were just so painful! I'm going to try and push through tonight. But I wondered do I need to stay on a week until I can complete the running sections required?

Also I'm just doing a rough loop round the block ( as am running outside) until I finish but how do you measure the actual distance your covering?

cinnamongreyhound · 03/01/2013 22:01

Hi yehudiwho, good to see you back!

Well done milkybrew :)

I think it's better not to move on until you've done all the runs of the current week SashaSashays. Having said that once you've done it you should move on as you'll be amazed at how quickly you improve. Perhaps try some stretching before you go, I have very tight hamstrings and that gives me tight calves too. Good luck with your next run.

Waves wildly to yehudi glad you are still running :)

cinnamongreyhound · 04/01/2013 08:19

Sorry SashaSashays got distracted halfway through and forgot rest of reply!!! I started measuring distance using the runkeeper app, once finished the c25k it also gives time cues and plays your own music. I got fed up lugging my phone with me so got a second hand iPod nano, isn't as good but has Nike+ app which measure distance and time and plays music. Others plan routes on line before they go and endomono is supposed to be good too :)

weblette · 04/01/2013 10:53

Well that's Run 1 out of the way and it was soooo much easier than I expected!

Sasha I don't measure the distance I do but I've a route I can adapt - it's easy to make it longer or shorter. I find that easier than running several times round a shorter loop.

raspberrytart · 04/01/2013 13:56

Hi, I havent managed to read the whole thread but wondered if someone could answer a quick question for me please.
I have been used to doing a fair bit of exercise up till a few weeks ago then decided running using the c25k podcast,I have done 2 runs on consecutive 2 days and was wondering if I can do a 3rd run then move on to week 2?
Im sure there is an easier way to describe all that!!
Many Thanks

cinnamongreyhound · 04/01/2013 14:00

I would say if you are finding it very easy then perhaps you should try starting a bit further along the plan rather than doing back to back runs. I always took a rest day between runs and that is recommended. Give week 3 a go after a rest day and see how you find that perhaps?

OP posts:
raspberrytart · 04/01/2013 14:44

Thanks cin, will give that a try

raspberrytart · 04/01/2013 14:57

Thanks cin, will give that a try

frenchfancy · 04/01/2013 17:36

WK2 R1 done, but I missed one of the running sections as my phone rang (I was waiting for a call so I couldn't leave it).

I certainly didn't find it easy, but I did it :)

The only problem I am having is a pain in my left heel. I've never had a hurting heel before. It doesn't hurt when I run, only the next day.

jchocchip · 05/01/2013 15:52

Lots of parkrunners today over 200 at brueton and over 300 at Bradford! Waiting for results which are late today probably because of the high turnout...

jchocchip · 05/01/2013 15:54

Don't know anything about heel pain I'm afraid :(

MegBusset · 05/01/2013 17:45

Done 5k today. Hope all the newbies are doing well :)

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2013 18:24

Really tough run this morning no reason really, perhaps the pace was a bit quicker. Burned 720 calories so can't complain :)

OP posts:
MegBusset · 05/01/2013 18:30

720 cals Shock How far did you run?!

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2013 18:35

10k but it was with the club so I think faster than my usual but we stop at a few points so took 1hr 6 in total.

OP posts:
shithappensx1000 · 05/01/2013 18:45

Wow cinnamon that is great. I did a parkrun today, I think it was about 30mins but still waiting for the official results. Hoping to do 7k run tomorrow.

Sorry Frenchfancy, I know very little about injuries, so I can't give you any advice.

frenchfancy · 05/01/2013 20:55

I can't even imagine being able to run for 1hr; Well done cinnamon

A bit og googling show that my heel pain is probably plantar fascitis caused by inappropriate running shoes. The first 2 days I ran in walking shoes (like hiking boots but a shoe) as it was all I had. I guess this caused the injury and even though i now have running shoes it will take time to heal. It only really bothers me first thing in the morning so I can live with it. Wk2 R2 tomorrow.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2013 21:10

That's good news frenchfancy :)
