Confusion over different diets - will this work?

tookoolforskool · 18/03/2011 13:39

There seems to be so much confusion over different diets. whats good. whats not good.
Im crap at following and tbh dont have the time nor inclination to follow a set plan.
( despite the inital excitement)

BUT

Will

  • smaller portions ( little bit of weighing in the beginning...no meal bigger than the size of your hand)
  • no processed food
  • less carbs, maybe only in one meal not in breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • lots of veg
-no low fat foods ( we all know these are high in sugar.

work?

lowering carbs definitely works for me. that will then mean no processed foods either as they are carb laden. not eating carbs means filling up on veg (some is carb heavy tho).....i find i'm not very hungry when low carbing. drink lots and lots of water

what about exercise?????

i drink lots of water already.
Im thikning porridge on work mornings, 4 days a week.
the other days ill have eggs.
no other carbs.. unless they occur in veg. Not eating potatoes though.

i cant be getting too obsessed with it. But just cutting bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, cake, biscuits, crakers etc..

but also doing portion control. Weighing the porridge, and then not eating any meals that are bigger than the size of my hand. ( which are tiny)

Exercise, bar dog walking im going to leave for a few weeks. I was doing the shred, and will start that again once ive got past the inital shock and ajustment of the eating, if that makes sense.

too many new things and its not going to work.

If you fancy some carbs at a meal time, stick with wholemeal and plate should be 1/2 full with veggies, 1/4 protein and 1/4 carb.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 18/03/2011 14:24

I use a ramekin for portion size

Celestialstarlight · 18/03/2011 14:25

Took Like you I'm a quite confused. I can't stick to diets and get so confused about what I should really be eating. I want and need to lose weight but don't really know the best way to go about it.

So I am trying very hard to eat only sensible and healthy foods. I've cut out all the biscuits, crisps, chocolate, alcohol, and am trying to reduce my carb intake from bread and pasta etc. I'm only on day 5 but have already lapsed due to DS's birthday on wednesday. But back on the weagon again. Oh and i really need to review my portion sizes too. But if I judged portions by the size of my hand I think i would starve Shock Please tell me this isn't some dieting law!

Anyway, just wondered if I could stick around on your thread for some motivation and support Grin I really need help to shift all this fat.

ive been counting all week.

it is actually horrifying and yes, pretty much no meal bigger than you hand. and thats including most of it being veg.

I was vastly over eating without even realising, but i expect thats the same for a lot of people.

Anyway -im quite happy to report in once a day with what ive eaten.
If that helps at all?

Yesterday i had 50g porridge. made with half skimmed milk and half water.

salad comprising of mixed leaves, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, spring onions and then a chicken breast that i had baked ( on oil) but in a chilli coating.

some blackberries

5 cadbury mini eggs ( yeah.. i know!)

hanfdul of prawns. small blob of low fat mayo. wrapped in lettuce.

Took That's a great idea. I'll post too on what I've eaten for the day. That way I'll be even more concious of what I'm eating and more likely to stay on the straight and narrow. And if i'm eating the wrong things others will hopefully be able to tell me where I'm going wrong. Your food yesterday sounds delicious

I've already failed this morning by having a slice of toast. But I had to take the easiest option before I took painkillers because I was in agony. But I will try to do better from now on.

Rumpel I use Food Focus to log my calorie intake. I've been doing this off and on for over a year. Amazingly though it highlighted the amount of carbs I was eating, but didn't really know how to reduce this as I was eating museli, wholemeal pasta and wholemeal bread...foods that I thought were good for me! And even though i was eating my designated amout of calories I still wasn't losing weight. So I was really struggling til I read these latest low carb threads and now I think see what I'm doing wrong. Then of course I would fall by the way side due to being immense dishearted and start eating crisps, chocolate, and biscuits Blush and the vicious circle would start all over again.

So new beginnings. Today is a new day. Here comes the new me yaaay Grin

Celestialstarlight · 19/03/2011 10:57

Oh...and I'll be back later to post my food intake too Grin

Have a lovely day everyone Grin

Celestialstarlight · 19/03/2011 20:48

Evening all.

I had mentioned earlier that I'd be back to post my food intake for today. So here goes...

B. Toast (reason for consumption mentioned in earlier post)

L. Small piece of emmantel cheese with a handful of grapes. Followed by Alpro Soya Yogart and a small banana.

D. Egg Frittata (made with mushroom, leeks, celery, red pepper and small amount of grated cheese) with rocket salad, plum tomatoes, avocado and balsamic glaze.

Several cups of tea throughtout day too.

All advice greatly appreciated to keep me on the right track. Also any food suggestions welcome too (except for fish ideas...I'm phobic)

Took How did you get on today with your eating plan? Looking forward to your update Smile

Please keep those diet tips coming Grin

tookoolforskool · 20/03/2011 09:27

that doesnt sound like a bad days eating at all.
Im sure the toast isnt too bad... you know, everything in moderation. Im not totally banning anything.

So breakfast was two boiled eggs. and they really did keep me full up till about 1.30 :)

Then i had greek yougurt and raspberries.
and half of DDS uneated, nice sausage from the butchers.

Tea was chilli con carne, no rice, but instead stuffed into a roasted yellow pepper.

and then i had some green and blacks later in the evening. 4 squares worth.

so, lunch was a bit rubbish yesterday.

Celestialstarlight · 20/03/2011 22:35

Major debunking of diet today. So much so that I'm ashamed to tell you what I ate! Lets just say that it involved cake, a roast dinner with yorkshire pud and an extremely creamy calorie laden pudding. And that was just lunch. The food intake got progressively worse as the day went on Shock Blush However I was out with friends and got a bit easily led carried away.

Ok tomorrow is another new day without the influence of slimmer and not on a diet people.

Took Your chilli soundes delish. The roast pepper sounds like a great idea instead of rice. Yip, I think i'll try that soon. I'm pretty unimaginative when it comes to meal planning so this may help me out somewhat...and get me back on track Grin

tookoolforskool · 21/03/2011 07:38

oh. dont worry about it. as long as you get back on it today im sure it will be fine.

For breakfast yesterday i had two boiled eggs again.
For lunch the left over chilli, just on its own.

then i had a cream egg and a mini fudge.

BUT i was doing physical labour for about 7 hours yesterday, painting all my fencing. bloody hard work and i ache like hell.

I had no tea as tbh i was too knackered to even chew.

Hello Everything and welcome. Yours are the same reasons why I wanted to join this thread. I had identified with everything took said too and felt our aims were similar. So reducing carb intake, watching portion sizes and trying to avoid processed foods where possible. Ideally I'd like to add exercise into the equation but I'm not too well at the moment. Hopefully that will follow later.

Your menu today looks delicious but I'm afraid I couldn't possibly offer any advice regarding meals as I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing and am also gonna need some dietry input too

Took I think given your 7hrs hard labour you were absolutely justified in your cream egg and mini fudge episode Grin

I do think though that you haven't eaten enough throughpout the the day though. But hell, you were exhausted. And I'm in no way shape or form in a position to give out any advice especially after yesterdays eating debauchery!

I started off with good intentions today with "eat naturally" cereal topped with natural yogart, pomegranate seeds and pineapple chunks.

Lunch A cookie and two handfuls of M&M's. What??

Hopefully redeemed my awful lunch by having a delicious ham and avocado salad with feta cheese in olive oil and a few baby plum tomatos.

I think also I'm gonna struggle with menu planning and meal ideas. So lovely ladies...please add your delicious low carb recipes/ideas here! There is only so much egg and salad I can eat Grin

Everything I usually have strawberries with my breakfast but I didn't have any left hence the pineapple. Gotta say it is far tastier with the strawberries.

And yet another major diet debunk. I came home from a meeting this evening and was ravenous. Opened fridge door and there looking at me was a strawberry cheesecake. Devoured all 483 calories of it. Good news is I'm not going to buy anymore shite junk food since I have shamefully demonstrated that I have absolutely no willpower whatsoever. I know that we should have celery sticks with homemade dip but a) I don't know how to make dip, b) don't have any excess energy to make dip and c) it doesn't really hit the spot anyway.

So in addition to everyone posting nice meal ideas, can you all post healthy snack ideas too since I have no idea what to eat inbetween meals if I get a little peckish Confused

tookoolforskool · 22/03/2011 07:57

haha. i cannot have anything in the house 'nice' or i will eat it. it may last 48 hours, tops!

This was yesterdays:

45g dorset cereals
salad greens, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, spring onions with tuna and sweetcorn mayo made with light mayonaise.

THEN - boss brought me in a homemade cupcake. There are only 3 of us at work. and she made brought in 3. I couldnt really say no.. if it were a bigger office then i could. but she brought it to me on a plate and everything. So i ate it. Chocolate and raspberry ( hey, a little fruit!!)

felt awful about that so ate no dinner. Again.
In the crap hope that i might still be under 1200kals

Celestialstarlight · 23/03/2011 12:37

Hiya Just a flying visit. Been busy today so didn't have any breakfast. I know that was wrong of me but I just didn't get round to it. So for lunch i've just had scrambled egg with spinach and tomatos on the side and a balsamic glaze. Tomatos were really tasteless so only had half of one.

Am going out again in a bit so I've taken chicken breast out of the freezer to defrost for tonights tea and have it with pesto and salad. That's the idea anyway.

Was quite naughty yesterday. Went out for a bite to eat with DS2 after school. Had soup and bread and a tiny slice of DS's muffin. Then later when I had made DS3's dinner, I stole a few of his chips Blush.

I'm now wondreing whether to do the Paul McKenna hypnosis thing but I don't know... I just need the willpower to stop eating crap and carbs. The rest of my meals I think are fine and I've stopped drinking alcohol during the week too. So apart from the crap junk food the rest of my dietry intake is quite good. What to do!

Took I'm in awe of you trying to keep to 1200 calories. That must be so difficult. But keep going you are doing well inspite of homemade baking sabbotage Grin

Everything How are you getting on?

tookoolforskool · 23/03/2011 14:01

well. yesterdays was not so good.
Still low carbs. no bread or pasta or rice or potatoes or anything for about 2 weeks.
Did eat a whole fricking easter egg though

!!!!

so i can do no carbs. i cant do no chocolate.
I had 2 boiled eggs
Tuna salad
Pork chop grilled, ( fat cut off)
cauliflower
green beans

All rather good until i ate the smarties egg at about 8pm.
FGS!!!

Jesus has a lot to answer for IMO Hmm Causes us no end of sinful chocolate temptation Grin Christmas...Easter... What is a girl to do?!
Hopefully no chocolate for you tomorrow Took. Although I have had a wee naughty moment of weakness just now and ate a mini sized toffee crisp biscuit with my tea.

Hope you have a great night out Everything. Yaaaay on the weight loss. I'm too frightened to weigh myself and also too lazy to hook up the wii. I don't have scales but think now I'm on this thread and really trying to be more councious of what I'm eating I might buy a set. Grin everythingmumhaving a good night sleep instead. I might just stick to useless willpower for time being. See how I get on.

Catch up later with you all

Celestialstarlight · 23/03/2011 20:30

I've just had a bag of crisps Sad Stupid unreliable willpower!
