Confusion over different diets - will this work?

tookoolforskool · 18/03/2011 13:39

There seems to be so much confusion over different diets. whats good. whats not good.
Im crap at following and tbh dont have the time nor inclination to follow a set plan.
( despite the inital excitement)

BUT

Will

  • smaller portions ( little bit of weighing in the beginning...no meal bigger than the size of your hand)
  • no processed food
  • less carbs, maybe only in one meal not in breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • lots of veg
-no low fat foods ( we all know these are high in sugar.

work?

CheerfulYank - do a Google search on "intuitive eating" as it's pretty much what Paul McK recommends and intuitive eating is very popular in the States (so I've heard). This is a terrific IE blog:

Celestialstarlight · 31/03/2011 23:56

Had a snickers and some crisps Sad

CheerfulYank · 01/04/2011 02:29

I had crisps tonight too, the baked kind. I wanted the greasy salt and vinegar kind but I didn't want to come here and tell you that I'd eaten them. Blush So I didn't. You're helping me already! :)

Were you hungry celestial? I often find it hard to turn down a Snickers when I'm really hungry; the sugar/peanuts feels like such a quick (albeit short lived) energy burst. Sorry you feel :( about it!

GotArt · 01/04/2011 02:37

Yes it will work... but add whole grains and legumes instead of say white pasta and white rice for carbs. And definitely exercise. Its not a diet though, just a changing your eating habits for the better for the rest of your life. I eat cookies and cakes and such as well, but make them myself and there's lots of great healthy recipes out there... Jessica Seinfeld does some great baking recipes with pureed veg in them and you are none the wiser to them being there.

CheerfulYank · 01/04/2011 06:14

Thanks bsshbossh ! I have a rough time with intuitive eating, it's honestly hard to know when I'm hungry! I've ignored hunger so much when I was dieting, and eaten so much when I wasn't really hungry that I have a hard time knowing sometimes.

Chewing gum has been helpful, although my jaws ache from it sadly enough. It makes me really stop and think; you can't put food in your mouth if there's already something in there :) It seems to be helping with the "mindless eating" issue.

I haven't really been making headway with exercise...I do walk everywhere but that's just because I don't drive. Blush

ppeatfruit · 01/04/2011 11:01

Cheerful The problem with gum is that encourages the gut to produce too much acid, also the sweeteners are allergy inducing. Listen to Bssh and me and Paul Mck it's the BEST WAY !!!

Celestialstarlight · 01/04/2011 12:08

Nope wasn't hungry Cheerful just a craving and desire to stuff my face. I was having quite a nice evening too so it wasn't an emotional response...or I don't think it was. Ironically I recieved the craving buster CD yesterday. Wasn't "tuned in" enough to use it when I needed it ( even though I quite literally had all the ammunition at my fingertips) It's a learning process though Smile But I am seeing benefits in more ways than one and DH left a note for me yesterday telling me that that I'm looking great and to keep up the good work Grin It's great when other people notice how well you're doing.

CheerfulYank · 01/04/2011 13:12

Aw, that was sweet of him Celestial. :)

I know ppeatfruit and I'm not looking at it as a long-term thing, believe me! Just for a little while to get me over the hump. Today I'm going to do it only when cooking and when making popcorn at work tonight. (I have another pt job at the cinema) Those are my biggest times of eating without realizing it.

ppeatfruit · 01/04/2011 17:23

Once you get into Paul Mc. you'll be amazed at how you get to 'full' when eating not much ( I always take a little pot of macadamias and dried fruit with an apple and water to work which works well).

GotArt · 01/04/2011 22:09

CheerfulYank Walking everywhere is fantastic. Its amazing how such a simple activity can increase your health factor.

Celestial So fricken sweet of your DH. Its one thing to say it to your loved one, but to leave a note, that is so loving. Smile

CheerfulYank · 02/04/2011 18:30

Well...I didn't do so well yesterday. First day of my period, which always means I'm running about throwing everything I can get my hands on in my mouth.

But, back on the horse. Have started today in a much more sensible manner, and amazon says my Paul McK book is on the way! YAY!

How are you all doing?

CheerfulYank · 02/04/2011 22:15

I got it! I got my Paul book/CD! I can't wait to begin.

So far today have had:

A bit of muesli
Carrots
Hardboiled egg

Small slice toast w/PB
Apple
Cottage cheese

CheerfulYank · 03/04/2011 01:58

And then:

Smoothie made with yogurt, berries, and protein
Large bowl of mixed veg with a small serving of pasta on top, olive oil

ppeatfruit · 03/04/2011 08:30

Brilliant cheerful NOW you'll start succeeding!!

Celestialstarlight · 03/04/2011 12:34

Cheerful remember to listen every day. Only eat when you are truly hungry. Put your fork down between each mouthful. Really taste and savour the flavours and chew at least 20 times. Be fully conscious of every chew. I need to take heed of my own advice though as I haven't been doing very well thiese last 2 days.

I was out with a friend for lunch yesterday. Had delish steak pie and chips. I did eat it slowly and consciously but I didn't listen to the signals at ate every bit on my plate!

Had my breakfast made for me this morning. A huge fry up. I wasn't at all hungry so only had a little bit of it. I shall eat my lovely chocolates midfully later Hmm Wink

Happy mother's day to all the mummy's Smile

tookoolforskool · 04/04/2011 09:40

ah. ive been awol these last few days.
friday i was ever so good until dinner time. where i had a tiny tiny portion ( about 3 desert spoons) of home made sheppards pie. God, it was lush. So i had another portion.

Then, becuase id had the damn crossiant earlier and then two portions of sheppards pie i decided the day was defunct and i may as well eat some toast and some chocolates and enjoy it. so i did.

Sat i felt sick.
Had a Pork burger and a bloody cupcake at lunchtime ( was at a farm) but somehow stayed within 1200cals.

And the less said about yesterday the better. Still. it was mothers day, and this is a lifestyle thing, not a quick fix... there will be days where there is lots of food.. and thats fine.

Today ive had raspberries, greek yougurt and a teaspoon of honey :)

CheerfulYank · 04/04/2011 19:28

That sounds good tookool ! I love yogurt. And I cannot resist shepherd's pie either!

I am starving today...I feel like I could eat the entire contents of the fridge.

For breakfast I had:
Harboiled egg
small portion of oatmeal w/walnuts and banana

Snack:
100 calorie pack of almonds
Small banana
Milk

Lunch:
String cheese
Salad with vinagrette

Sigh...I haven't had time to listen to the CD yet. I will try soon!

Celestialstarlight · 05/04/2011 15:27

My apologies to you all for also being awol. Our new dog joined us on Sunday so I'm afraid i've been a little preoccupied. Less time on MN and also not nearly as focused with my eating as I should be. On the plus side though I've been out walking loads so that's bound to shift a few calories, isn't it? Hmm

took and cheerful you both sound like you are doing well.

I'm not going to post what I've eaten today because I'd be terribly Blush. Needless to say I've been polishing off the chocolates from Mother's day. One box down two more to go Blush Grin

CheerfulYank · 05/04/2011 20:53

I've had

Oatmeal w/walnuts and banana and brown sugar
100 cal almond pack
Cheese Stick
Smoothie

Going to go make something else in a minute...

I listened to Paul yesterday and really like it! I wanted to wake up and listen this morning but didn't get up early enough :(

CheerfulYank · 07/04/2011 02:16

tookoolforskool · 07/04/2011 07:34

Celestialstarlight · 07/04/2011 20:59

Hi. Sorry. I'm still here too. But I have been really bad. I haven't been listening to my Cd and I've been stuffing my face with everything. High carbs, high sugar...the lot Blush I actually think the weight I lost has all been put back on again; I can see it in my face. So not good. But tonight I'm going to put on my CD and get back into gear again.

Also I'm starting back at work again this Sunday after being off ill for 6months. So I've mixed feelings of nervousness, excitement and dread. Not only that but I've put about a stone on in weight since I was last there and don't think my uniform will fit me now and I'm too scared to go try it on Blush I'll keep you posted!

keep up the good work ladies you both sound like you are doing great Smile

tookoolforskool · 08/04/2011 11:44

Celestial - i doubt you can see a different from just a few days... its probably just water retention or something... dont beat yourself up and just get back on it :)

Yesterday i had:
raspberries and greek youghurt
the left over risotto
another lidt egg
Apple
Slice of toast with tomatoes on top.

Not bad i dont think.

Today ive had dorset cererals good honest crunch
tiny bag of buttons ( 75kcals)
And im about to have 2 boiled eggs and then an apple.

Not sure about dinner yet. proably a salad.

Shall be having a bbq at some point over the weekend too.. but as long as i account for that, or if i go over by 100kcals or something, then im happy with that. I shall probably make sure im under the 1200 cals today and tomorrow to make up for it though.
