Kinect Your Fitness

Sassyfrassy · 26/12/2010 23:03

Having received a Kinect for Christmas I am now going to try to do some good excercise using the fitness program.

I thought it would be great if others who are using the Kinect to excercise and lose weight to get together and share thoughts and progress.

I did a cardio boxing and a zen work out class today which was good. I also played Kinect adventures for an hour which left me dripping but it was really good fun.

Tomorrow my plan is to do a personal trainer session, a cardio boxing and then finish with Zen for winding down.

When you start up the xbox, before you start waving at the kinect sensor, that's the dashboard. You can create your own sign in, pick an avatar and also set up xbox live which I recommend. That way you can download new stuff from the marketplace. There are already new songs for dance central and new work outs for Your Fitness.

Right, I know I'm being incredibly lazy here, am aware of xbox live but havent investigated it properly. Ds is only 9 and so although he has played on older games at friends houses we are only allowing him games up to 12 (much to his disgust!). His friends have xbox live but we probably werent going to bother, and he's not yet mentioned it. Am i right in sayuing that it costs about £40 per year? Once you download the stuff is it yours 'forever'?
As regards 'the dashboard' as i was on my own i couldnt even work out whihc channel the tv was on and so I waved at it furiously for some time before having to ring dh and ask him which channel to use (& therebye giving the game away that I wasnt tidying up!). So by the time I got the tv on properly the dashboard had obviously gone! Like I said I'll as ds to show me!

I can't wait for the Michael Jackson and Dance on Broadway releases for the x box.

Especial the Jackson one as you have to sing and dance. Oh my poor family having to listen and watch me at the same time. Like Lips and Dance Central combined.

I love the Dance one, getting frustrated with Zumba, love the dance moves but I'm crap with it.

Love my shape and I am modelling a large mountain blob this year, meh. But the balance and hitting game are so fun and I am stryggling through a couple of the post baby classes.

I love Kinnect, it rocks :)

Sassyfrassy · 31/12/2010 10:15

Fojo,

You don't have to pay for xbox live, only if you want a gold subscription. I just have the regular free sort and that works really well.

Once you have made your sign in and avatar you can use the kinect id to teach it to recognise you.

You do need to have the xbox connected to the internet one way or another. We use a wifi adapter so it can connect to our network.

The recognition thing is so cool. DH only has to walk into the room (we have a very long knocked through room, luckily) and a little message comes up on the screen logging him in as it recognises his shape.

We call ours Johnny 5. DD's call it Wall-E.

Sassyfrassy · 31/12/2010 13:55

After two days of feeling lousy with cold and fever I am finally feeling better! So tonight is Kinect night, I'm planning some Your Fitness and then dancing and adventures. I'm even going to get dh to join in so I can try out the multiplayer before I have friends over on sunday.

ooh, thanks sassy, my ds has shown me how to sign in and we've been on the rafting game whihc is great. V interested to know that you dont have to pay for xbox live, will look at that. We have wifi downstairs but at moment xbox is in ds's room, we're not sure where its final home will be! Thanks for your help

Sassyfrassy · 31/12/2010 14:59

Just check if you have wifi adapter, we had to buy ours separately. It's worth it though just to use the marketplace to download extra stuff. Some stuff is free to download, others you need to pay for using points. You buy points using your creditcard, very very easy. You get 1000 points for about £8. Things like a new song for dance central usually cost around 250 points.

Right, I definitely don't have a workout mode option anywhere - do you have to unlock it? We've only tried about 4 songs so far... help! I MUST have workout mode since I bought it for precisely this purpose...

FoJo · 31/12/2010 18:14

thanks again sassy. Will, it took me ages to find the workout mode the other day. I found it after having given up! I think I just chose my song and pressed 'play' (or maybe perform?) and then there were about 4 more choices, one was dance battle and one was workout - i think. Good luck

ilythia · 31/12/2010 18:17

Well I had my first workout on the yourshape, mildly irritated at the pauses between each 20 second exercise. Well, more than mildly, was bloody annoying, but hopefully once I am off the 'beginner' bit it will speed it up a bit.
DD's and I had great fun on the games though, the boxing and the light up one in particular, although the light up one was not good for DD2 who only has little legsGrin

Has anyone signed up for the online linky thing?

Sassyfrassy · 31/12/2010 22:52

Wilfshelf, I can see why you find it hard to find the workout mode, I had a go myself.

Finally figured it out. You need to select your song, pick perform, then difficulty, and finally, in the same menu where you can change dancer or venue you can pick work out mode. Once picked you don't need to redo it for other songs though.

minipen, have you unpacked the 'biggest loser' yet? Have found it on play.com for £13 but it has mixed reviews. I dont watch the tv programme but have peopel desperate to spend money on me for my birthday in just under 3 weeks time and would feel happier with a cheaper game for when the novelty wears off in these credit crunch times!

FoJo · 01/01/2011 09:15

Confused - my striking out didnt work - Blush

Sassyfrassy · 01/01/2011 15:18

I did an hour of dancing last night which was great fun and left me dripping with sweat. However, I am not sure I trust the calorie counter. Has anyone else noticed that it will keep ticking even if you stand still?

OP posts:
WilfShelf · 01/01/2011 15:32

I will try again in a bit: I DO have dance battle option, but last time I looked I really, really didn't have a 'workout' mode option underneath it!

I will keep trying later when I can prise the kids away from it. Thanks anyhow!

Sassyfrassy · 01/01/2011 16:03

It's two menus after the one with teh dance battle option I think.

Sassyfrassy · 02/01/2011 19:38

Did you have a look at the website for the Your Fitness game Ilythia? Haven't gotten around to it myself but would love to hear about it.

ilythia · 03/01/2011 08:53

it's here you have to login this is the homepage

I'm afraid the login made me so I ghaven't got any further than that pageGrin

ilythia · 03/01/2011 08:54

You have to 'Before accessing all the online services, you must first link your account in UPlay on your XBox 360.'

xbox is DH's dept, he can do that bit.

BuckBuckMcFate · 03/01/2011 09:15

Just marking my place on here. We've got Dance Central, Animals, Adventure, UFC(!) not my choice. I really want the fitness one, not the one with Beckham in the ad, the one where the woman talks about doughnuts? Anyone know which one I mean?

I am very self conscious about my post pregnancy body, enormous breastfeeding boobs and wobbly tummy, DS3 is 7 weeks so trying to be kind to myself but it does mean I don't like jumping around in front of anyone so I can't wait for the DC to be back in school so I can dance dance dance.

My brother is getting married at the end of March and I have high hopes for the kinect helping me get back into shape by then.

I'll be back tomorrow with my sweatbands and legwarmers on Smile

ilythia · 03/01/2011 09:51

this is the good one, the beckham one costs spondoolicks.

Have no idea what the doughnuts advert is thoughGrin

If it helps, I did the test thing on friday and saturday some boxing and hulahooping and yesterday I was in agony on my bum and thighs, so that's good!

BuckBuckMcFate · 03/01/2011 10:10

Will avoid the Beckham one then, thanks Smile

This is the The woman is ever so slightly scary

I'm going to ask DS1 to find the workout mode for me on Dance Central so I'm ready to go.
