Enjoying food more on MJ

I was thinking about this yesterday - because I don't want to eat loads these days I find that I choose food I really want. So where I used to eat stuff to try and make me feel full and usually fail I now want to use my calories wisely and choose food that I will really savour the taste of and enjoy.

I've read so many threads on here about people worrying they won't enjoy food any more if they start the jabs, or taking a break on holiday so they can eat more and I feel like the opposite.

Do others feel the same?

Very much the same for me. It's such a common fear from people thinking about starting though.

I've never completely missed a jab for a holiday. The most I did was stretch the gap between jabs to 10 days earlier this year (already in maintenance by then), but I also slightly boosted the dose I took before heading off.

It's interesting isn't it @GiveMeWordGames I remember the same happening when I went low carb several years ago. I really savoured the food I did eat.

Yes! I enjoy food so much more for not feeling dependent on it. I choose whatever is most nutritious for the calories and love being able to enjoy just a little bit of cake or pudding and not wanting more.

Yes, I have exactly the same feelings around this. It's really freeing for me, and I find eating out to be so much more enjoyable and not stressful any more.

Part of the reason that I was morbidly obese was that I was unable to manage situations like holidays, eating out, celebrations etc and would eat too much of the wrong things. I don't want to stay doing that, I want to be able to eat a normal or small portion size and be satisfied with that.

Yes! I would never miss a jab, I’m almost 2 years in and I have lost 10 stone. I don’t need to eat more to enjoy a holiday. I don’t need to stuff my face to feel satisfied. I really do eat food I absolutely enjoy, whereas before I was craving so much bad stuff. I had an appalling diet. I really enjoy food. I hated the severe suppression in the early weeks of MJ, I like to have an appetite, I even like that my body expresses hunger, I LOVE that these feelings are at a normal level now, rather then a very disordered level. I cannot imagine missing a jab so I could eat more, although I do have a decent appetite and can eat a good amount as a one off now, it’s like my dreams have some true with this!

Absolutely the same for me too. I was really worried that the jabs would reduce my enjoyment of food but it's been the opposite.

I love the idea that it's freeing. That's how I feel. I have always loved eating out but perhaps even more now. I'm being really picky!

I completely get what you mean about wanting to make the calories count rather than just eating for the sake of feeling full. I think that can actually make food more enjoyable because you’re choosing things you genuinely fancy and taking your time with them

HappyWineDay · 08/10/2026 07:06

Completely agree. We generally eat a low carb diet now but we’re always trying delicious new recipes. We really enjoy our food, never get into a “food rut” or deprive ourselves, but easily stick to sensible portion sizes.

I’m finding the same on Wegovy. Now I’m not driven by such intense feelings of hunger, I can really savour the food I’m eating, taking my time to enjoy it rather than eating quickly to satisfy my hunger. In a way, it’s backfired because I feel that I’m a more fussy eater than I used to be. My DH made me an omelette last week and it was so rubbish that I ended up not eating it. Whereas before I would have eaten it despite it being rubbish. Long-term I think it will be beneficial as I can learn to enjoy and savour my food rather than eating for fuel.
