Did you get hair loss on mounjaro?

I recently moved up to 10mg and my hair is falling out! I'm finding it rather distressing - I love my thick hair.

The advice online seems to say that it's temporary and to ride it out. Was that your experience?

What are you eating each day - how many calories and how much protein. How much weight are you losing each week.

SilenceInside · 26/09/2026 12:10

Yes, I did get a period of telogen effluvium after about 3 or 4 months after starting Mounjaro. It lasted about another 3 months and then resolved itself. It’s unlikely that you’ve got a serious vitamin or mineral deficiency if you’re managing to eat a varied diet and/or if you’re taking a multivitamin.

@MrsPepperpotty , yes lots. Thankfully I had very thick hair to begin with. It was literally clogging up the shower drain.
I’ve been maintaining now since early March and I recently went to the hairdresser who noted that I have lots and lots of baby hairs growing which does unfortunately mean my hair doesn’t look quite so sleek but it’s all worth it to have dropped 15.5 BMI points and gained a whole, new and much nicer wardrobe.

MrsMiagi · 26/09/2026 14:58

Yes it was horrendous. Been at maintenance since Jan and still awfully thin and wispy. Shame really, it was gorgeous when i was fat

susiedaisy1912 · 26/09/2026 15:04

Yes my hair is thinner and lost it’s waviness but I don’t mind as being 7 stones lighter outweighs the hair loss for me.

youlied · 26/09/2026 15:06

Not at all, mind you have very thick hair

BettyscakeShop · 26/09/2026 15:07

Yes, I read lots of advice and now take pumpkin seed oil capsules & biotin and it’s totally back to normal.

Venusunbroken · 26/09/2026 15:10

No direct link between the meds and hair loss has been found and those who take it and don’t lose weight don’t get it. Howver it is a factor in weight loss and once it starts you can’t stop it, it’s called telogen effluvium

it is temporary and when your weight stabilises it will grow back, you won’t go bald, it’s the strsss to the body of losing weight , meaning hair follicles close down, and also lack of nutrients if you are not eating right.

I haven't noticed any hair loss. I've kept a very steady rate of weight loss - 1 to 2lb a week - and I think that helps.

Littlebitpsycho · 26/09/2026 15:25

Yes, I'd say my previously very thick, coarse hair has lost about 50% of its volume and is now quite fine. Only takes about 20 minutes to straighten now and previously could take up to an hour. I've had to stop going blonde as well as my hair just can't cope

Sunbringer · 26/09/2026 15:33

No. My hair actually looks better than before.

GreenLemonade · 26/09/2026 15:42

I thought I’d avoided it, but sadly, I started losing hair about 6 months into my weight loss journey. My hair is still falling out but there’s also lots of new growth. I find the baby hairs so annoying. I almost wish they wouldn’t grow back 🫣

However, visually, it actually looks like I have more hair volume than ever before because I’m much smaller now, so the contrast between my hair and my body is greater. I’m not sure if I’m explaining it properly but it somehow makes my hair look much fuller than it did before.

Mysticmaiden · 27/09/2026 14:03

Yes lost from month 3 to now almost 2 years on mj, and I've been in maintenance since nov 2025 and actually gained 2lbs in that time but still losing hair. I only lost 1lbs a week average and focused on high protein diet, also had collagen for around 3-4 years now and tried biotin injections and special hair growth shampoos to stop the hair loss but nothing has worked. I also had blood tests in dec 25 which showed all my bloods were normal including iron levels etc.
The only time it stopped was when I switched to wegovy for 3 months, so for me I think it's a reaction to the GIP in mj. My dose has come down from 15mg to currently 4mg too but still losing hair!

I've been on it 4mths and haven't noticed anything more than normal. My hair had been thinning for the past year, but I'm sure this is peri related and was happening before starting mounj.

Previously when I've lost weight (not from mounjaro), about 4mths in I have noticed hair less. All over, not in patches. Both times, it seemed to happen for a month before stopping.

Onlythisnamewasavailable · 27/09/2026 19:56

I had a bit of hair loss, but it was minimal because I made sure I didn't lose weight too quickly, and have been eating a balanced diet with lots of protein.

Luckily I have thick hair and it wasn't too much loss so my hair doesn't look thin. However, the really problematic thing is that usually my hair is a good couple of inches below my bra strap, and whilst it doesn't look thin, it is thinner and therefore the ends loom straggly. So I have had to cut a significant amount off and it's now above my braline. It does look healthy, but I hate that it's shorter than I like to wear it.

The second worst thing is the regrowth. I am on a walking holiday at the moment, spending a lot of time on cliff paths, and it's rather breezy... I have my hair in pigtails or ponytails, but in pictures I have all this 6 inch long hair blowing about everywhere because it's shorter than where the hair ties are

Another inch and I think it will stay tied back.

It's hard for people with long hair though as it takes years to grow back!

Zempy · 27/09/2026 19:57

No. I lost 40% of my body weight on Mounjaro and didn’t lose any hair.

My DD lost three stone through dieting and lost loads.

Torela · 27/09/2026 20:05

Yes, I've lost about 50% of my hair volume. It has always been very thick and long, and it still looks OK as I tend to wear it up and it still looks thick as it's so long that I have to coil it around several times. But I can feel that it's lost volume as I used to need very thick clips to hold it in place. I've started taking biotin to help improve it.

However I'm also late 40s so some of it may be down to peri.

tobee · 27/09/2026 21:18

Well I had thin hair for years; seems hereditary in my case. Then it seemed to stabilise. Then I’ve lost weight on mounjaro and it’s thinning again now. I haven’t lost fast and I eat tons of protein and healthy diet generally. But I noticed it is quite thin and my scalp is visible in some areas. I had to stop dying my hair about a year before I started mounjaro and I find the grey/white hairs that have fallen out onto my clothes are really visible to me ☹️.

Still love the weight loss and love mounjaro but wish my hair was thicker.

PhysicsBowlChampion · 28/09/2026 09:14

Hair requires quite a lot of calories to keep it growing/alive so focus on eating enough. Biotin and other supplements won’t help unless you’re deficient in them.

Daschy16 · 28/09/2026 09:23

Yes, i used to have lovely thick hair. Now its significantly thinner and a frizzy mess.

Despite what a PP says, there is a link between MJ and hair loss. It is listed as a side effect on the information leaflet sadly. I have yo-yo'd my weight my whole life and this is the only time I have lost hair when dieting. I would also note that my hair loss has worsened since increasing to 10mg three months ago.
