Sudden anxiety on MJ wk 6

Strawberryfield85 · 15/07/2026 16:39

So as the title says really, I’m currently taking 2.1mg MJ (started at 1.25). Have lost 7kg and minimal side effects. Unfortunately this week on day two post injection I was overcome by an immense panic attack as bad as before I started Sertraline 5 years ago. I’m now at a loss as what to do this week. Go back down, have a break?

I think I just need a hand hold really. I want to continue taking it as the weight loss is great and I feel so free not constantly thinking about food. I can’t cope with the return of panic though 🥺

Anyone? I’m grateful for any shared experiences or advice.

i took just 3 doses of this in October 2024. After the third dose I started with awful anxiety and panic attacks, it also stopped my antidepressant working even though the dose was adjusted twice. I also developed depression in addition and had to change antidepressants twice last year.
please think very carefully before continuing these weight loss drugs.
if you go on you tube and tic tok there are people with the same experience. Also I’m in a Facebook group Glp 1 recovery everyone tells the same story and some people have taken it for a while and been ok then had mental health issues from it even though some people had never experienced it before.
more needs to be done to warn people about the link with glp1 and mental health.

I've also experienced panic attacks and anxiety which was quite debilitating for the first 12 months a few times on and off. Having been on mj now for 21 months now I've realised that the anxiety, palpitations and mental health attacks tend to be more frequent when I eat less food altogether or eating less often, so eating regular keeps my blood sugar steady and has resolved these issues.
Could this be the same for you?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 17/07/2026 08:21

Oh my word. I could have written all of your posts and now Im also in a dilemma as to whether to continue. @Strawberryfield85 i also started at 1.25, lost nearly 6kg and my sertraline is having no effect after many years of being brilliant. Same predicament. I've wondered about trying Wegovy instead as im not sure I can carry on. I think I may take a little break first.

Please talk to the clinician who prescribes your SSRI. I am taking Citalopram with Mounjaro and all my doctors are aware of everything.

I thought this too and I am making sure I am eating more and regularly but it hasn't really solved the issue yet :(

how did you get on? I went back to 1,25mg on Friday and felt quite anxious again on day two and now the evening of day 3. Health anxiety is in full swing, I've convinced myself I'm having a stroke. It all sounds rather funny when typing it out but it really isn't. I'm gutted, I'm finally losing weight which is amazing but this is terrible. I'm also due my period so this plays a part but I'm starting to have more and more moments that remind me of the time before I started Sertraline. And I really can't go back there. I'm considering to ask my GP to up my Sertraline but do I want to pay that price? I would rather I can come off it alltogether not go up :(. It's such a dilemma.
I'm struggling to see how such a small dose can have such an impact.

Yes, I did tell my GP that I'm using Mounjaro but they couldn't have been less bothered. I'm currently trying to get some HRT prescribed and I'm banging my head against a brick wall sadly :(

Hey OP what dose of sertraline are you on? I totally identify with feeling the same spiralling anxiety pre sertraline. And mine is health anxiety as well, cant stop scrutinising my moles! Its so depleting isnt it.

Also. How many weeks on MJ? I went from 2.5 last week to 1.85 this week and the anxiety is less. It hasn't gone, but it is less. Im on week 6 so not sure if its passing now im past the first month or because ive reduced the dose.

Im taking 2mg of melatonin in the evenings and im finding that takes the edge off as well.

scoopsahoooy · Yesterday 21:39

I had an absolutely horrendous panic attack once, the day I went up a dose from 2.5 to 5mg. All night, heart racing, sweating, the works. It only happened once, though!

Had same in Week 5. I was not increasing my dose. It's a recognised side effect. I felt really horrible with it and got a bit worried.
I posted about it in one of the groups. Others reported similar and reassured me. By Week 7, it had all resolved.

I am also on long-term antidepressants.
Hopefully, yours is just like the commonly mentioned side effect and resolves soon.

I’m on 100mg and have been for several years now. What are you on?

Health anxiety is so tiring, I’m sorry you’re suffering too.

It’s scary when I have those moments that remind of my time before Sertraline. I really can’t cope with that again.

Took my 7th jab on Friday so been on MJ similar amount of time to you. I reduced from 55 clicks back to 30 clicks and considered going down even further this week to see how I feel.

Thank you. I’m glad it resolved for you. What dose of MJ are you on if you don’t mind me asking? And did you end up increasing your AD?

@Strawberryfield85 yes thanks I’m better now but not back to my old self. I was previously on Paroxetine and mounjaro stopped it working so my dose was increased twice first before switching.
doctors don’t seem to see a link between glp1 and mental health issues unfortunately.

I spoke to my GP about it this week as I was feeling so anxious and low (low mood has rarely been an issue previosuly) and she said she has had a lot of patients stop their WLIs because of mental health issues. She absolutely sees a link. I think she would rather I reduced or stopped the WLI rather than increase my dose (currently on 50mg Sertraline) and thats what I will do if it doesnt calm down.

Im on 50mg. I had 2 weeks on 30 clicks, went up to 45 for 2 weeks and then also 55 clicks (!) for 2 weeks. I have gone back to 45 clicks this week. I do feel better this week, like ive crossed a barrier but im not going back to pre sertraline days either!

Thank you. I’m glad it resolved for you. What dose of MJ are you on if you don’t mind me asking? And did you end up increasing your AD?

I was on 2.5mg at the time. I didn't increase my AD.

In Week 3 of MJ, i got very low mood. Very low. I was tempted to stop MJ but watched myself very carefully. I spaced my MJ to 10 days instead of 7 days before taking the Week 4 jab. Then another 10 days before Week 5 jab. I of course did other things to help with mood.

The low mood gradually lifted by Week 5 jab and I went back to spacing my jabs every 7 days, that's when i noticed the anxiety/feeling scared/fast heartbeat/feeling of dread/anxiety, did i say anxiety.

By end of Week 7/start of Week 8, the feeling of anxiety became less intense. I didn't even notice the exact day it eventually stopped. I have been fine since.
It's strange because i have been on long-term AD and it goes hand-in-hand with anxiety but in the first two weeks of MJ, there was such a massive improvement in my anxiety.

@Strawberryfield85 , how are you today?
