Weight loss injections: delaying second dose after severe first week nausea

Advice for a suffering newbie please

first dose last Monday afternoon a had the most horrific nausea for 5 days solid. Morning to evening. Had to force myself to nibble a few things per day and clawed my way through the days.

given the heat this week, and having all my little ones at home for half term, I’ve not been able to face doing the 2nd jab tonight.

I definitely want to stick with this, but would struggle to be a Mum this week if I end up in the state I was last week!

I know this level of nausea as a side effect is uncommon on the first jab, so now I’m wondering, would leaving it 10 days be ok?? That would mean I can get through the bulk of half term week feeling ok.

or has anyone else had bad side effects on the first jab that have lessened with the 2nd, or does it get worse?

really torn as to what I should do!

Oh you poor thing, that sounds absolutely brutal, especially with little ones at home needing you. Five days of nausea while trying to be a functioning mum is no joke at all.**
I can’t speak to the medical side of delaying it but honestly if I were in your shoes I’d just call the clinic or pharmacy tomorrow morning and ask them directly. they’ll have heard this question a hundred times and can give you a straight answer without any judgement. Much better than guessing either way.
Hope you’re feeling much more yourself soon. half term is hard enough without feeling rotten.

It's probably fine to delay but you can also get medication to help with the nausea if that's your main symptom and you want to keep going. I'd talk to your prescriber.

HappyHedgehog247 · 25/05/2026 22:54

Or you could take less than the full first dose.

Junmaro · 25/05/2026 22:56

I’d take half or even a third of a dose and build up slowly if you’re that sensitive.

Junmaro · 25/05/2026 22:57

Also, wait till the nausea subsides before injecting again.

gwrbakes · 25/05/2026 22:57

I would not waste your time calling the prescriber, your options are limited from their pov - either take it and manage the nausea with meds or don’t take it at all.

You could take 1.25mg and something for the nausea to see how you get on. If you are not eating properly that will make the nausea worse too.

Did you get the booklet with your medication? The nurse explained to me that you can adjust your injection day etc if you need to for holidays etc. looking at the guide you will be ok for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

I did the first 7 weeks (23lb) on 1.25mg (counting clicks), didn't go onto 2.5mg until 6 months in and 45lb lost.

If injecting 2.5mg is making you that unwell don't do it again.

you could download Shotsy, it’s an app where you can track jabs and dosage as well as side effects (there is an upgrade but I just use the free version) Put the details of your first jab in, and check on the calendar bit how much is left in your system. You don’t want it to get to zero before jabbing again, but you’d be ok with it getting lower than it is on day seven! Hydration can really help with easing a lot of the side effects too, as well as being important in this weather of course!

Thank you all so much all really helpful

I’m honestly so gutted that I reacted like that as it had taken me a year to actually take the plunge and order it and I was actually so happy to finally start it.

I don’t think I got any information with the pen, my husband was home when it arrived and just put it in the fridge, possibly he threw anything else away 🙄 and I asked a friend who is on it to pop round and do my first jab for me.

can I ask how you take 1.25mg - I would definitely be interested in taking that route in the hope that it would give me a good balance, I’ve only got 2 st to lose but in all honesty I’d be over the moon with 1.5

A full dose is always 60 clicks in whatever the mg it is.
To take 1.25mg you would count 30 clicks as you turn the dial.

Thank you

do you take this dose because of side effects or for maintenance

do you still lose on it?

I'm on 10mg. However had issues taking 5mg so would do 45 clicks which was 3.75 for several weeks.

I also started Mounjaro in a heatwave (beginning of July last year) and it definitely didn't help things (i then went camping where there was no shade and the nearest tap was two fields away).

Mounjaro suppresses thirst as well as hunger, so you need to be really on top of your hydration today and stay in the shade.

I had A similar experience to you, though not quite so severe. The good news is that I found dropping the dose really did do the trick.

At this stage, what I did, was to look for a lower dose that I could tolerate to act as a base that I could build up from. If you’ve only 2 stones to loose, then go right down to a lower dose. As a pp said each click of the dial is 1\60th of the dose. So 30 clicks is 1.25mg or half, 20 clicks is a third and so on.

Have you lost any weight this last week? I had 3 stone to loose, and I’ve lost half of that so far and haven’t even reached a full 2.5mg dose yet. I’m not sure if there is a correlation between side effects and efficacy, but you may well find that you can still loose on the lower dose, in which case it’s going to end up being much cheaper for you than others.

Feel free to PM me if you want.
