Restarted MJ, shocked at side effects second time round. Any advice?

I was on mounjaro for 3 months early last year, 10 weeks on 2.5mg, and 5 weeks on 5mg. My weight had crept up a little towns the end of the year, after a couple of holidays and Christmas, and I had stopped anyway at a BMI of 26.5, so I thought I would try again for a month or two and aim to get to a BMI of 25 (I'm in my sixties and don't want to go any lower).

After around 6 weeks on 2.5mg, with slow weight loss of around 4lbs, not much suppression and in fairness, me not being disciplined enough around what I ate, I triated up to 5mg 4 days ago. It has been horrendous, I've had two days of sulphur burps, no appetite at all and severe diarrhoea for 24 hours. I had none of these side effects first time round, so I am shocked and feel completely unprepared.

Any advice, either around managing symptoms, or around adjusting the dose to get a few weeks of reasonable suppression without feeling this dreadful?

Take 3.75 next ,and get some pepto bismol.

What was your diet like before you injected?

Outofspace · 19/02/2026 20:12

@Frenchfrychic it was good, it is generally good I think, I'm quite health conscious, eat a natually high protein diet and cook from scratch a lot. I maintained for a long time and can identify the periods when my weight was creeping up and why. I went from an indulgent holiday and Christmas into a period of celebration for a milestone birthday, not an excuse, but I wasn't eating in my regular pattern to maintain. So I am not surprised the weight crept up. Since starting back on MJ diet has been fine, adequate I would say for slow weight loss, but perhaps not as perfect as the first time around. I have a lot more pressure in my life currently, so there has been more convenience eating and less cooking from scratch.

Thank you, I was wondering about trying that. Whatever else I do I can't take another 5mg and risk feeling like this again, it's quite grim!

What did you eat immediately before injecting with 5mg? If you were eating high carb, fatty or spicy foods, then these are more likely to trigger unpleasant side effects.

This! I was super unwell after I went up to 5.

I feel so stupid admitting this, but now that I think back, I ate something very fatty. I was at my daughter's for a roast dinner and although I had a small dinner and loaded up on the veg, I ate some pork cracking. She was very proud of how it had turned out and offered me some and of course I ate it. My family don't know I'm using MJ and I was thinking it wouldn't do too much harm calorie wise (wasn't thinking about the impact of the fat) because I was going up to 5mg the next day with a good eating plan ready for the week. So I ended the week with an indulgence and oh boy am I paying the price!!

Yep I've had this too and it's due to what you eat around the day or so around your jab, try and have a normal healthy day the day of your jab and day after, pepto bismol for the sulphur burps and immodium for the diarrhea clears it up quick but my sympathies, the sulphur burps are HORRENDOUS

Sloelydoesit · 20/02/2026 23:08

I jab on a Sunday. If I eat anything fatty on Monday, Tuesday or even Wednesday I do suffer. Even Thursday I avoid it. Literally the only meals I could have a blow out would be Friday and Saturday. And even then I can't eat loads. So definitely stick to lean protein and veg/salads on those days.
This time of year is also tough because salads aren't as appetising! I'm really looking forward to the warmer weather!

LifeisLemons · 21/02/2026 09:16

Ah! That’s a bummer but the good news is that it’s highly likely to be the yummy fatty pork skin that caused your digestive issues, rather than simply the increase in dose. I’d probably struggle to resist it too. 😁

So, if you stick to fairly bland foods around your injection days, I’m sure you’ll be fine.
