Taking Mounjaro whilst on insulin.

I was in hospital for a week in December with a nasty chest infection which sent my blood sugars haywire because of steroids (I had a reading of 34!). I was already type 2 and badly controlled so the diabetic specialist nurse started me on insulin.

She also mentioned that when my sugars were more stable I could be started on Mounjaro. I have a BMI of 45 and it was partly to stop the weight gain which isexpected when on insulin.

A phone call a couple of days ago said that in my face to face appointment tomorrow I will probably be started onMounjaro.

Has anyone else taken Mounjaro or another GLP1 whilst on insulin?

Exactly how much does it restrict what you eat? Whatare the side effects? Are you more likely to have hypos?

  • Please note I am in Scotland, where prescribing is different from England,

I didn't think you could have both?

It looks like you can have both!

I would definitely ask those questions in your face to face appointment tomorrow, as your prescriber should be able to answer with a lot more detail than people here. My understanding, as a non diabetic, is that the chance of hypos is potentially higher, so your insulin might be reduced. But, reducing insulin might then also cause hyperglycemia and DKA, so it's a bit of a balancing act potentially.

In terms of Mounjaro and side effects, the patient information leaflet has all that detail: https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.15481.pdf

This is only done under strict medical supervision, so you need to speak to your medical team if given.

OP, I take both. I haven't had any issues other than much tighter control. I will say that I've taken it very very slowly and for the first 2-3 months I was on less than 2.5mg. I'm now just started my 6th month and now on 4.5mg. I've lost weight slowly compared to most people. I have just hit the 2 stone mark. But it's made the weight loss seem more natural to be honest.

Good luck. I had awful side effects at first but glad I tried again after a break.
