How do you choose your goal weight?

So I’ve been “lucky” I guess, and found MJ even at low doses giving me a really strong effect, so the weight has been falling off. And all of a sudden, I’m in the “normal” BMI category. I’m thrilled of course!

But now I’m trying to decide what my goal weight should definitely be. I previously thought 54kg but now I’m not sure.

For context, for my height, “normal” BMI weight starts from 50kg up to 64kg. I’ve found being on the jabs challenging and tiring, so I’m looking to lower my dose and titrate down asap so I can have the energy to do more exercise. I want to build more muscle and that seems impossible for me to do whilst on the jabs as I have so little energy.

So, I’m just wondering, how did others choose their goal weight? And have you reached it yet or not?

Im 5ft4. My goal was always 10 stones. Once i got there i realised it isn't lol. I am at 9 stones now and my stomach is only now looking smaller. I hadnt realised how different i would carry my weight now.
I think 10 stone sounded right but actually 9 and a half stones is the top end of healthy BMI for me because of my ethnicity. I just never thought i could ever get there.
I'd say just see how you go. The next step for me is to increase calories and body recomp, which will mean an increase in weight, but hopefully not too much in size.
I have lost 5 stones 8 pounds on mounjaro in the last year

SilenceInside · 27/01/2026 16:48

My goal weight was a fairly arbitrary number based on what I remember I once was for a very short time in my early 20s. So 10st 4lbs or just over 65kg which would make my BMI 24. When I started taking Mounjaro that seemed an impossible goal given that I was starting at 22st and BMI 50. I am now at about 11st 5lbs ish or 72.5kg and a BMI of 26, so it seems more achievable to get to 24! In fact, when I get to my original goal I will have a reassess about how I feel at that weight, and perhaps set a further slightly lower goal, just to give myself some leeway. Maybe 62 or 63kg eventually.

So, still not reached my goal weight after 18 months on Mounjaro. But I knew that it would take at least that long before I started, so I am pleased to have nearly made it.

CirclesandSpirals · 27/01/2026 18:21

Yes I think I just picked an arbitrary number too and like you and now I’m nearly there I’m rethinking!

I need to focus on body recomposition too once I reach “goal weight”, and also don’t mind putting on kg as muscles.

You’ve made me think that actually maybe I need to look at what my current body composition is and maybe that will help me decide how much more weight I want to lose before I start upping my calories for muscle growth and gain.

I started at 12 stone9 and wanted to get to 10 stones. I’m 5ft 1. But when I got there I was still in an unhealthy bmi so aimed for 9. Got there and now I’m aiming for 8 1/2 but I may carry on and get to 8. I still feel quite big at times. I carry it on my tummy mainly and it bloats easily.

PurpleCoo · 27/01/2026 18:47

My first goal was just under 74kg, because that was what I usually weigh when I haven't put on weight, and it didn't feel like I would be able to get lower than that

Then when I achieved that goal, I thought 69.9, because that's below 70kg, and BMI is a load of rubbish, and I won't be fat at that size even if I am overweight technically. I was wrong.

Current goal is 65kg, because at high 67s I still have a wobbly lower belly and wobbly upper arms that are disproportionate to the rest of me, and look weird because the rest of me is slim and pretty solid. BMI is a smidge in the overweight range.

I am flexible though. I go to the gym 4 times a week. I am doing weights, Pilates, swimming and walking a lot. I am likely recomping, so if I never reach goal weight, but lose fat and gain muscle, I don't care if I stay the same and remain overweight.

Angelabdc · 27/01/2026 22:09

10% of my body weight, then I maintain for a month or so, then I go 10% again. First time doing this got me from 93kg to 81.5 in about 6 months, next time I'll be looking to get to 74kg. I find this sustainable and a realistic goal to set. Hopefully at some point I won't want to lose 10% of my weight and the goal might be a bit smaller- maybe 5% will do it

Flowers999 · 27/01/2026 22:13

I'm 5ft6 and my goal is 10 stone. It was 11 stone but I moved it when I got there.

I'm about 5lbs away from goal and oh its teasing me!! I feel fab though lost basically 7 stone this year and gone from a size 18 to an 8 🙂🫨

FurForksSake · 27/01/2026 22:18

I moved mine lower multiple times. I wanted to end up at bmi 22ish and I’ve got down towards 20. I’ve been maintaining here for a few months and it feels good. I’ve just bought some size 6 jeans from next so I don’t really want to get much smaller than this!

I wanted to make sure I had a buffer for maintenance, I could lose or gain 7lbs from here and still be in my envelope.

MisseyLurker · 27/01/2026 23:11

You’ll work out what weight looks and feels best for you. My ‘normal’ BMI range is between 57.6kg and 77.1kg which is 9st 1 and 12st 2. I’m 5ft 9 and I can tell you that anything under 9st 7 and I look ill.

I did consider getting to 9st 7 (60.3kg) but actually feel and look good at 10st (63.5kg). My weight has dipped the last week even thought I only jab 5mg every 2 weeks and I’m at a BMI of 20.2. Just making sure I don’t go too much either way.

As I said, you’ll know when you get there what is correct for you.

myladyjane · 28/01/2026 08:06

I set mine higher than most - a 5 stone loss that will see me at bmi 26.5. I then had to cope with the horrific news that in fact I am a cm shorter than I always thought I was and that bloody cm meant my goal needs to shift down an extra 4lb. So I ignore it.

i am short, perimenopausal and pear shaped so most of the excess weight I have now sits on my thighs. My waist is less than half my height/less than 30 inches, I am a size 12/14 (mostly 12), my blood pressure is normal. I feel quite good in clothes I like. This is the weight I was at 18 (when I thought I was enormous ffs / I clearly was just a bit plump). Whilst I know I’ll still be a bit overweight I am ok with that tbh as I have to weigh it up with the impact on my mental health as well - whilst my relationship with food isn’t disordered, I have to watch it and chasing a specific weight has been pretty damaging in the past.

I ramble just to say we all have different goals. As we all know, mj isn’t a magic bullet either so in my case I’m happy not to chase something where I don’t think the pay off is worth the effort iyswim.

vickyfowler · 28/01/2026 08:23

I haven’t set a goal, for me a target puts more pressure on. I started at 20 stone though; so a long journey.

Tammy214 · 28/01/2026 08:35

I set a goal before i started, it was a previous weight where i felt fine with and the doctor didnt complain i was underweight. Since starting i am now re-thinking it to more be about the clothes size i can wear comfortably.
I aim to lose more than needed initially because i expect to put some on when i finish the jabs, but also because am sure i will be getting ready for the menapouse at some point . So am 5ft8in, 14st 5lb SW, 12st 13lbs CW, 9st 8lb Tw but that i am likely to change to 10 stone because since putting on weight i now have bigger boobs and a butt, not sure much will change with those two so might need to compensate for that

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 28/01/2026 08:37

I went for the midway point of healthy bmi range. Not there yet but I’ve also told myself that I’ll see as I get closer and may decide to go slightly higher if that feels right.

HeidiLite · 28/01/2026 10:21

like others, I also lowered mine several times. First I just wanted to get to 70 kilos. Maybe 65 - I am muscular and have a large frame, so during my 'slim' periods, I would hover around 65ish wearing size 10/12. 62 was the lowest I had been as an adult and I was a trim size 10 then - so that was sort of a dream weight, but I never thought I would get there.

And then I did. And thought that what if I go below 60? Could I? And I did. So decided that may as well aim for 57 - to give myself a bit of a buffer for holidays and such. Am now 57 kilos. Wear size 6/8. Jacked - it's so much fun to build muscle when you can see it, without a fat layer on top.
But luckily it did not continue from there, now I feel done - there is no extra fat I want to lose. Minimum healthy weight for BMI 18.5 would be 52 kilos, but I have no desire to try that.
