Travelling with mounjaro

I was wondering if anyone has any advice about flying with mounjaro? We are going away in the summer, to Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa, and I'd like to take my mounjaro with me. It's allowed in all of those countries, but I'm wondering about arrangements for the flight, which is with Qatar airlines. I was wondering what other people's experience has been?

I'm not too worried about keeping it cool as I know the pen is fine at room temp as long as it's used within the month (and it isn't a trip that I'll be able to keep the pen cool the whole time). It's more whether people have had any difficulties taking their medication in hand luggage? I'd prefer not to check it in case my bag gets lost.

My prescriber will give me a copy of my prescription, will that be adequate? Has anyone been asked for a formal letter or anything like that?

My son flew with Emirates airlines with inflixamab which is an injectable immunosuppressant. They were great and kept it in the fridge in the aircraft for him. He was going for 3 months. He had a letter from the supplier saying he was on it and what for and got through with no issues in Dubai where he changed planes nor in Australia.

I’ve flown all over with mine in hand luggage and never even been asked about it at any airport anywhere.

You shouldn’t check it in because can be very cold in hold.

Flown with mine a few times, in the hand luggage in an insulin carrier I bought on Amazon and no one’s ever batted an eyelid.

I’ve travelled a lot with mine. I always make sure it’s an already used pen so I don’t have to keep it cool.
But otherwise no issues at all. Just keep it in your hand luggage. I wouldn’t want to risk losing it but also I’ve heard the luggage hold gets too cold.

No one bats an eyelid with you travelling with MJ. Take in hand baggage and use a Frio insulating cooling wallet, buy from Amazon or Chemists. Lots of diabetics travel with pens in cooling wallets.

I just shove mine with my liquids in hand luggage been all over short and long haul, never been questioned wny more than I have over my mascara

letshavetea · 09/01/2026 19:27

I use a Frio wallet too. I take the box with me as it has the prescription on it. When I fly long haul I put it in the fridge on arrival
as the temp is over 30 degrees sometimes.
i put it in my hand luggage. Never had a problem with customs.

I've flown with mine, including on Qatar, with no problem. I bought a Frio travel case to transport the pen, in hand luggage, and kept the box with prescription and needles, wipes etc.. together. I did ask at Heathrow if I needed to take it out for scanning, and they didn't.

InfoSecInTheCity · 09/01/2026 19:35

I flew to the US recently and just had the pen in the box it came in with the prescription label on it then I put a couple of needle tips in the box too. Into my hand luggage and that was that, I didn’t even need to take it out to go through the X-ray.

No idea about the mounjaro but wow that sounds like an amazing trip! Have a blast !!

Stompythedinosaur · 09/01/2026 23:45

Thank you everyone! That's really reassuring to hear! I'm glad it isn't likely to cause a big issue!

Did everyone take needles in hand luggage too?

Yep took whole lot in my hand luggage. One pen plus couple of needles and alcohol wipes fitted nicely in my Frio.
