Mounjaro restart - does it re-create hairloss ?

Hi!
I really can’t trawl through all the threads so am starting this one so forgive me ! 🙏
Does anyone have experience regarding hairloss on Mounjaro ( a slow weight loss but probably not eating enough) then stopping for a while ( 6 weeks in my case) then restarting ? Did the hairloss cease ? Or did it ramp it up ?
I lost 3 stone on MJ over a 7 month period ( so not rapid by any means) and started shedding hair ( lots ) 5 months in . Panicked and came off it. I’ve maintained the weight loss for 6 weeks post MJ and I think the hairloss has just started slowing BUT I’m feeling the aches and pains in my joints returning day by day . I still have 1.5 stone to go til an optimal weight .

In a nutshell - has anyone re-started MJ after a pause and got to target finally without losing hair all over again ?

According to my hairdresser, yes.

3 stone in 7 months is not slow. Recommended loss is 1-2lbs a week and you are 1.5lbs a week so bang in the middle. I do think hair loss is a side effect of the drug that some get and it is not listed as a side effect on wegovy so it must be linked to mounjaro itself. I've had a lot of hair loss too but only lost 1lb a week and easily hit high protein goals of 1.3-1.8g protein per kg body weight. I started losing hair in month 3 and now at month 13 im still losing even though I eat 1200-1400 cals a day as I'm only 3lbs from my 9st target of bmi 22.5.
I'm soon moving to wegovy to see if that improves it. Have you thought of doing the same?

Thank you 🙏
Most useful, I will look into Wegovy as I’d never thought of swapping and I’m so sorry to hear that the hairloss is still an issue.
I’m off to the doctors now to see what, if anything they can do blood test wise but the last time he didn’t look like he.gave a cr@p as I’d taken weightloss jabs ….
All the best with your quest btw

Wegovy caused me to lose hair @Mysticmaiden and OP.

I stopped it, regained the weight. I’ve considered restarting it but not sure if I can face struggling with the constipation side effect. I decided I can live with hair loss but the gut problems are horrible.

Oh no ! Sorry to hear it and thanks for letting us know . I think maybe I will re think and get naturally healthy. I’ve heard of you can get your gut biome into a healthy to start with you may not experience as many gut problems whilst on the meds. I stayed on the starter dose and had very few gut issues. Upping the water and adding psylium husk powder to my morning smoothie helped massively with any blockages.

I recently listened to a podcast where a nutritionist recommended changing to a "weight maintain" calorie intake for at least two weeks which they suggested would stop the hair loss (or as many weeks as it takes to stop the loss). Note, not increase weight, just maintain. Then restart at the "less than two lbs/week" rate. Doing this has apparently rectified the situation in many cases.
If it starts again after a period of time, then repeat the pause.

I did it for around 2.5 weeks in sept as I was at a work conference and had free meals all day, I upped my cals from 1100 max to around 1600-1700 and maintained and didn't lose any weight, didn't make any difference to hair loss! Was still falling just as much out. Went back to the lower calories to lose again. Down 5lbs last month. Most of november I'm eating more and moving less, as I'm at home but still plenty hair loss and maintained this week. I hit my protein goals too 70-105g at a weight of 58.7kg

@Mysticmaiden I guess it doesn’t work for everyone. I understand that hair loss is now an accepted potential side effect from mj, not just something relating to rapid weight loss per se. That also means different causes will react differently to efforts to stop the hair loss. Nothing will work for everyone, sadly.

Thank you for the info/ input I really appreciate it 🤗
It all helps to build a bigger picture. I personally think the jabs stop absorption of some nutrients. Who knows.Time will tell I guess… I too never starved or skipped my vitamins and I admire anyone who can stay calm and focused whilst experiencing hairloss. Almost 7 months on MJ , 5 months in experienced hair shedding and it’s still ongoing . 8 weeks of quitting MJ and my aches and pains are returning now although not so bad as when 40 lbs heavier ! hair still coming out , but I still reckon I feel better in myself that the before picture . The conundrum as whether to microdose or not is real 😬

Mounjaro doesn’t cause hair loss. It’s scuentifally proven and you can google. It’s the dieting that does, so if you lost the weight by any other method in the same period, be it slimming world or whatever you’d have the same issue, it’s the shock to the body makes the hair follicles close and shedding to occur, it’s temporary, so yes if you restart, or do anything else to lose weight, it may come back

and I don’t understand why you think it would make you not absorb nutrients, it slows your digestion, so if anything it would mean you absorb more,

Flipflopskid · 08/11/2025 07:14

I guess time will tell what it causes (although the listed side effects in the MJ leaflet does include hairloss now) but my iron levels plummeted suddenly despite me eating well. I took quality supplements.
I’m having done bloods done next week. My GP was very caring and not dismissive at all ( which I’d half expected) when I saw him a couple of days ago so I’ll update this if anything further is found out if it helps others in the same boat.

I previously lost the same amount of weight doing SW a few years ago but had no hair loss at all. Same pace too ,- just over 1 lb a week.

My scalp now alternates between feeling sunburned / like there are tiny ants scurrying around up there!

I wish it would stop !

No more jabs for me I’m afraid.
