What are you eating before a workout?

Taking Wegovy and making a conscious effort to improve my fitness/activity levels alongside it. I'm enjoying a bit more cardio in a regular activity plan, but I'm struggling a bit because I can only fit my workouts in the early/mid mornings and I'm not really ready to eat by then which means I'm not fuelled enough.

Yesterday I did a 5k jog, but it was a real slog because I just had nothing in me other than some tea and water. I actually felt a bit unwell when I got home until I had a slice of toast.

I'm a fussy eater so really fruit isn't an option for me and I have a nut allergy. I just need something small that will give me enough go-go power to make it through a 30-45 minute workout.

I tend to work out first thing and don't eat until afterwards. Perhaps consider your dinner with regards to ensuring you have enough fuel in the tank for a morning work out?

Yeah, I did consider that I hadn't eaten very much the previous night, but I'm finding I really don't want to each much before 5pm. (whereas a few months ago I'd be eating a big dinner at 7 followed by a big chocolate fix).

Why not make a smoothie? It will be like having a drink, but will pack in some nutrients. I got a recipe book of high protein <350 calories smoothies and I'm looking forward to trying them. I am a bit funny with fruit and hate bananas but find I can eat fruit that isn't bananas in smoothies, or is cooked.

Otherwise I have some fat free Greek yoghurt with a 20g sprinkling of granola on top. I do a body pump class and an hour's swim after that with no problem

If you’re only running 5k then a banana should do the job. If I’m going to parkrun and it’s further away and I know I won’t be eating for a while I take a Huel black to have on the way there - it’s 400 calories and 35g protein. Simple carbs are ideal pre workout and protein post workout.

I tend to exercise fasted, Either gym or swim.

I hate doing anything exercise based in the evening, other than a walk or a Pilates class.

It’s good the night before that will mostly fuel you. That’s why marathon runners carb load leading up to the event and the night before.

I often run without breakfast with no issues.
