Hair loss on Mounjaro

MsTamborineMan · 04/10/2025 10:10

I've been on MJ since May, in the last 6 weeks I've noticed hair loss, I'm losing quite significant chunks of hair in the shower or when I brush my hair, my hair is noticeably a lot thinner and I'm starting to panic about getting bald spots! Or it all falling out!

Has anyone found any solution for MJ related hairloss? All the resources online are just bland, non committal advise about not losing weight too quickly, which I really haven't done (on average 1-2 lb a week, so completely normal weightloss), nothing about if there's anything I can actually do! Also talking about telogen effluvium, but as my weightloss hasn't been particularly rapid I think it's more likely the actual medication itself

I've tried the kerastase genesis hair serum, it's done very little. Anyone tried minoxodil? I feel so frustrated that I finally found a way to feel good about myself, I'm starting to fit back into my clothes and now I'm going to be Bald! My provider again just said it was a side effect, take biotin which I have been. Eat protein, drink water which I have been. Ffs

If anyone's had this did it stop? Did you have to stop the MJ?

@MsTamborineManI am still shedding but not as drastically so I’m going to take that as a win because my hair is literally quite pathetic right now.

I can’t pinpoint exactly what the game changer was but since the rosemary oil is when I noticed a big difference in the volume I was losing.

Let me know how you get on!

DoubleShotEspressox · 15/10/2025 07:25

Oh and also this for an extra 20g of protein each day. I love it because it’s like drinking squash and I don’t need to chug a thick shake.

It happens with any extreme weight loss.

The L’Oréal growth booster serum contains the same ingredients as the kerastase genesis anti fall serum, which has done wonders for my hair. Glowwa hair food was recommended to me by my hairdresser and in three months I can see a big difference to my hair.

focus on protein, but also iron. It’s key to hair growth. I take spatone daily.

I lost an incredible amount for a solid 6 months, about 5 months in to starting WLI. I was very fortunate in that I did start with very thick hair and lots of it. I did think I might have bald patches but I don’t, my hair just really thinned out. I used to use an industrial sized clip to hold it up whereas now a bog standard one works just fine. I’m getting regrowth now and I’d say in the last month or so the loss has slowed down and I’m not losing such alarming amounts.
I never bothered with supplements etc in the end, there was too much choice and it all seemed a bit vague on the science for me.

HappyAsASandboy · 15/10/2025 08:06

I lost significant weight over the last year - three stone, average of 1-2lb per week.

My hair started falling out four months in, and fell out at an alarming rate for 4 months and is now slowly growing back. My hair did this after each of my children too (physical and mental stress) and after starting a new job after being away from work for a few years (mental stress).

It is almost certainly TE due to the stress of weight loss on your body. I personally don’t think any of the serums and supplements have any evidence of working - people think they work because they start taking them a month or two in to hair loss, give it a month or two to work, and then hey presto! regrowth starts. But that fits the time scales of TE perfectly …..

Try to stay calm. Your body will adjust. If you get to more than about 4 months of losing hair and it doesn’t slow down then I’d seek medical advice rather than buy supplements and serums.

I'm glad it's slowing! I'm not sure if mine is slowing too as I've noticed less hair about my person, but ai haven't washed it yet this week so we will see

Everything I've read on TE suggests what's done is done but it makes me feel better to think I'm doing something. Serums aren't going to harm and at least the existing hair I have is in good condition! And I also wanted to have some gauge as to what I can expect to happen moving forward, whether stopping MJ would halt the hairloss.

I've also read that it can be starting the MJ itself that is the stress event rather than just the weight loss, but its still TE. I've lost weight at this rapidity before and never had hairloss. I guess it doesn't really matter what's done is done at this point, hopefully it slows and I maintain some hair 🤣

I read an article on Facebook about this yesterday (can’t find it now) written by a nutritionist. They were saying it’s a hormone that affects hair. And that no amount of serums or collagen will alter it. They said pumpkin seed oil can have a good affect on it. (wish I could remember what she said properly)

DoubleShotEspressox · 23/10/2025 07:22

@GingercarIve been religiously taking a high dose of pumpkin seed oil for a month now and I’m still shedding. But maybe it would be worse if I wasn’t?

@MsTamborineManHow are you getting on?? I’m still shedding sadly - thought it had slowed but we are back to losing clumps. I can’t wear my hair down any longer - it’s actually quite distressing.

I’ve dropped right back to 2.5mg this week so I’m hoping that helps somewhat. I just really didn’t want to go cold turkey from mounjaro when I’ve only just hit my goal weight.

Hi, I'm not sure. I had a bit less hairloss when I washed my hair this week but I'm still losing quite a bit throughout the day.

I've just been wearing it up in a loose bun all the time. It looks okay but it's pretty thin. Sorry yours is still going on! It's really depressing isn't it?

I've nearly hit my goal weight and I'm debating stopping, but I also don't want to go through all of this just to regain the weight!

I just washed my hair and it does seem to be a bit less this week compared to last, which was a bit less than before! So hopefully it's slowing, its definitely not quite so terrifying when I shower. Im only washing it once a week atm so it gives me me good idea how much I'm losing. It's been about 2 months for me so far, and I reckon I've lost 40-50%, my scalp is much more obvious, it's also quite tender, I'm not sure what that means. I think I've just accepted it now, I can't change it.

I am sure it will grow back OP. Seems to be what happens to some people.

I do think rapid weight loss is the main culprit in most cases, though some people will be more sensitive than others, for whatever reason we do t know. A pp on this road said she lost 2.5 stone in three months - a huge amount in my opinion – and a massive shock to the body. I think even losing 2 lb a week is high - that’s more than half a stone a month – unless you’re very overweight.

DoubleShotEspressox · 25/10/2025 06:58

@MsTamborineManYeah similar to you I think about 40-50% gone. I can literally feel the cold breeze through my bloody scalp when I commute into work.

Doesnt seem to have had much effect but I’m going to stick to the regimen so at least what’s left is in good condition.

I know that growing it all back will be a long long process but I just want it to stop fucking falling out in the first place.

Placestogo · 28/10/2025 09:05

What is “TE”?
ive been on MJ for 5.5 months, on my way to my 3rd stone loss but feeling like im losing more hair than fat!!
ive always lost hair but this is crazy.
i did a month of buotin with no improvements. Ive bought Rosemary oul and apply it once a week maybe not enough?
im going to buy a different biotin product + pumpkin seeds oil and use rosemary oil more regularly

It's telogen effluvium, which is basically when your body goes through a major stress like weight loss, hormonal changes, illness it switches off some of your hair follicles so you lose hair.

I've read articles that say it can be the rapid weightloss associated with Mj or potentially the medication itself causes the 'stress'.

Mine does seem to be slowing after around 10 weeks. I've started using pumpkin seed oil and rosemary oil which coincided with the slowing but this might just be coincidence. I only use rosemary oil when I wash my hair around once a week. It's so stressful isn't it! I feel really frustrated with myself. But 3 stone is amazing, in the long run will be so much better off without that 3st even if you have to go through a period of thin hair.

Mine is definitely slower compared to a few weeks ago. Will wait and see if this is a permenant slowing.

I've also pretty much hit my goal weigh, I don't see the point right now in stopping MJ, want to focus on maintenance as I don't want to go through all this just to regain the weight.

I've starting using colour wow raise the root volume spray, and it's made my hair look so much better. It's obviously not actually growing back hair but it's definitely taken away a lot of the lankness that I was getting where it was so thin. Worth a try to make you feel better about your hair?
