For those who have general anaesthetic while on MJ

I'm going to need an op in the next month or two under general anaesthetic.
For those who have had GAs while on MJ, how long before the op did you need to stop jabbing? And how soon after the op could you restart?

I’d ask at your pre op

I didn’t stop just told anaesthetist and they intubated rather than not.

I stopped 2 weeks before my op on the surgeon’s advice and then jabbed a day or two afterwards. It didn’t make any difference, I stayed on the same dose and continued losing weight.

I've just had my pre op assessment and was told I need to stop one week before.

I will also inject a day or so after the operation.

Yeah I'm going to. Only found out 2 hours ago that I need the op so going to ask when they contact me to book it but just wondering out loud roughly what I should expect

I had a GA in July, I jabbed on the Wednesday had my op on the following Tuesday and jabbed again the day after, so didn’t stop at all. I take it for diabetes and my pre op diabetic plan didn’t mention it so I rang to ask and they said a week was fine.

Snozzlemaid · 10/09/2025 19:24

I had emergency surgery 5 days after a jab. My family told the doctors I was on MJ. But then it was life saving surgery as I’d suffered a brain haemorrhage so not something that could wait for it to leave my system.
I would definitely discuss at your pre op and take advice from those doing the surgery.

I was told to stop 4 weeks before and restart 4 weeks after - maybe my surgeon was crazy cautious? As others have said, check with your medical advisor, everyone has different protocols it seems…

I was googling this yesterday as I have to have an op in October. The answers varied from 3 weeks, to a few days. So I have emailed the surgeons secretary to get them to ask. My pre-op assessment is the day before which will be too late.

I am so sorry @Snozzlemaid to hear about your harrowing time. I do hope you are doing OK now. It takes a long time to recover from that. Sending you all the best over the inter web! 😁

Snozzlemaid · 10/09/2025 19:48

@MagnoliaTreePetalsThank you. I’m doing really well thanks. Amazingly I have no lasting issues apart from a bit of fatigue some weeks.

Had a stomach op in April and took a week off.

Juicelover · 14/09/2025 15:54

I had one last week and they advised no need to stop. Last jab was 4 days before surgery. No problems and anaesthetist was happy.
i think guidance has recently changed.

This is the advice I was given by my healthcare provider.

If you are having a planned surgery / general anaesthesia/deep sedation

If you are undergoing surgery please ensure you inform your surgical healthcare team including the anaesthetist about this medication prior to your surgical procedure.
This medicine slows the emptying of your stomach, increasing the risk that stomach contents (e.g food and drink) could enter into your airways and lungs during surgery or procedures whilst you are under general anaesthesia or deep sedation. This means that a modification to the pre-procedure instruction and anaesthetic technique may be required.

I missed one week's injection prior to surgery and started again 2 days after. All with surgical teams permission.

MagnoliaTreePetals · 14/09/2025 21:17

Ive just had a reply from the anaesthetist saying 7 days minimum gap before my operation.
