Have I ruined my pen?

I collected my pen from the pharmacy last Friday and put it straight in the fridge when I got home.

I just went to get it out to take my shot, and it had got pushed to the back of the fridge and was virtually frozen. It was still in the box, and the outside had ice crystals on it.

Given the price rises I really can’t afford to replace it. Has anyone else had a similar situation? Thanks

I did the same with my, fortunately last Mounjaro. Mine was very frozen so the mechanism didn't even work. I threw mine out.

Was the liquid inside frozen? I think it should be okay if the liquid inside was not frozen and - in my opinion and I ain’t. Medical professional, but the worst that can happen is if it was frozen, then pen could be slightly less effective.

but double check that

Was it definitely frozen? Try priming it and see if any liquid comes out (but don't try and inject it yet).

If it is frozen, you can't use it. Freezing destroys the peptides and, at best, it will be ineffective.

I'm a risk taker (use the pen WAY above the 30 days, always do golden dose) but even I wouldn't use this pen. Sorry, I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear.

Ice crystals on the box or on the pen?

Wildfairy · 04/09/2025 11:46

Was the liquid frozen as others ask, if so, I’m afraid I’d bin it.

Monsheryu · 04/09/2025 12:34

You can use a previously frozen pen so will need to bin.

I had a near miss myself with 2 spare pens I had, someone accidently knocked the dial and turned the fridge right up! I was very lucky that both pens were in the door and it was only the stuff at the back that was frozen solid! I could still see the air bubbles go up and down in them luckily.

KitsyWitsy · 04/09/2025 13:49

I would have to chuck it, I'm afraid. This is one of the reasons why I wouldn't want to stockpile too many pens in my fridge. Bad enough when a cucumber gets frozen, never mind a £200 pen!

ComfortFoodCafe · 04/09/2025 15:06

No you cant use it if its frozen. It needs to go in the bin.

ShuriPouri · 04/09/2025 21:18

Yeah I looked it up and deffo a frozen pen should not be used

DarlingHoldMyHand · 04/09/2025 21:19

I recommend putting it in the fridge door shelves to avoid this. It's the least cold part of the fridge. It won't help with the current pen but might be useful for the future.
