Travelling with Mounjaro- on a plane

Hi all,

I am going on a three week holiday to North America/Canada, which will involve three flights to get to the destination. I will have three doses left in my current pen so will be taking it with me and taking the doses then will not need to bring it back. I’ll have a new pen ready waiting for when I come back.

Has anyone travelled with a mounjaro pen on a flight? I’ve done some googling and asking chat gpt. I am wondering about:
-pen in hand luggage not checked bags (hold temperature too unstable)?
-pen doesn’t been to be kept cold while travelling (it’s an already opened pen)?
-need a doctor’s letter? Or screenshot from provider? Or name label on the box enough?
-where to put the needles- in carry on so that can declare and explain or in checked bags which means they’re not a risk in the cabin but could be detected and investigated without you there to explain?
-ditto sharps bin? Obviously I don’t want to take my existing sharps bin with like 20 previous needles in there. Is there such thing as a travel sharps bin?
-take the pen out at security and place in the plastic trays? And the needles, if in carry on? Like I say there are three flights so quite a lot of security to get through.

Any experiences and advice greatly appreciated, thank you!

I’m:

  • taking mine in hand luggage
  • taking printed prescription with it
  • taking spare needles, will hang onto them and bring back to put in sharps bin (I have a case for the pen and spare needles I purchased from Etsy)

I'm just back from a holiday and had no problems taking my pen through airports.

  1. yes, pen in hand luggage, not checked bags.
  2. As long as you are sure the temperature will remain below 30 degrees, you dont need to cool it. However I was going somewhere hot so I took a Frio pen pouch which has a cool pack to keep it at room temperature. I also had a tiny ice pack with mine as well, I then kept it in the fridge when I got to my destination https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07ZVXHG1W?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder_k1_1_4&amp=&crid=9WB2DUML66RN&sprefix=frio&th=1
  3. Take the box/packaging, with your prescription label on, incase you are asked anything. I have taken medication abroad for years and never been challenged, I still take the packaging with the label on just incase.
  4. I put the needles and wipes in the pouch with the pen.
  5. I took a little jam jar in my hold luggage, put the needles in there and brought them home for the sharps bin..
  6. yes, take the pen out at security and put it in the tray with your other stuff (Having it in a separate pouch also helps, it gives you some privacy). so in my pouch I had the pen, needles, swabs and the cooling 'block'. it went straight through security without any questions or fuss whatsoever.
  7. I also took some spare needles & wipes, and a couple of syringes in my hold luggage. This was very fortuitous as my pen jammed part way through the 4th dose. Its never happened before but I had heard about it from others, so was prepared for every eventuality!

Have a wonderful holiday

I have only been checked once taking it in hand luggage (12 flights since I started MJ). They checked that the name on the box matched the name on my passport.

Hi there, I’ve flown long and short haul many times with my MJ pen. This is what I do/have found:
I use a Frio wallet as I don’t want to risk temp fluctuations.
I take the original box with me. I store my email with the order/ prescription in a folder on my phone so I can show it if asked - but haven’t been.
I take both needles and wipes and also syringes in case of pen twist malfunction
I wrap used needles in tinfoil and bring home for safe disposal in sharps box after my trip
I always take all items (except used needles) in my hand luggage
I’ve never been asked anything going through security
I’ve never had a problem since starting and travelling last October
Enjoy your trip!
