Stoping mounjaro for holiday?

MounjaroHolidayy · 21/07/2025 19:58

I've been on mounjaro for 4 weeks and lost 1st 2lbs which I'm very happy with. I'm still on the 2.5mg dose and didn't feel the need to up my dose after my first month. My new pen is waiting in the fridge for me to start it. I'm going away tomorrow for two weeks to a caravan with some family that do not know I have started mounjaro, and I have no desire to share that information with them. I was planning to put the pen in a cosmetics bag in the fridge with various bite creams and pile creams etc and hope no one has a nosey, but now I'm wondering if I should just have a break for two weeks? The pen is unused so would need to be in the fridge for the first week of the holiday. I know technically I'd be starting again when I return from holiday but my BMI is high enough that I would be approved for a third pen even with a break. Has anyone done this? It seems fine to me but are there reasons I shouldn't? What's the worst that can happen?

Thanks!

I would just take the break. I am on 15mg and skipped a week.

Eivira · 21/07/2025 20:16

Put it in a face cream box(I use a no. 7 serum box, fits perfect) that only you use, then in fridge in cosmetic bag with other bits, use pen then keep it in your handbag. If you wrap the pen in tissue as well it doesn't rattle, worst that can happen is nosy peeps /kids open it, but I also seal mine with a small sticker. Just tell them that it's your expensive face cream that's to be kept refrigerated don't meddle!

tostaky · 21/07/2025 20:59

Im planning to take a break (and jab just before i go)

eeeeeeeee · 21/07/2025 22:15

Has anyone done this?

No, I just personally think if you’re taking the medication then just commit fully. The stop-start, to eat whatever you want on holiday seems strange to me. You’ll still be able to eat whilst on holiday so can you still enjoy new cuisines etc but you just won’t overeat?

It seems fine to me but are there reasons I shouldn't?

Well you’re not following the instructions for the medication and there’s a high risk of gaining weight. To me it seems pointless taking the medication just to later undo your progress and gain weight.

What's the worst that can happen?

I mean, the issues in the patient safety leaflet are still pertinent as it takes time for MJ to leave your system, so you likely will have a small amount of MJ in your body if you skip a dose. This dose might not be enough to prevent you gaining weight but might be enough for you to get side effects.

How long has it been since your last injection? Once you’ve used the pen for the first time, it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge for the following injections.

Personally I would change my injection date temporarily, so if it’s been enough time since your last injection (3 days I believe), you can take your next injection asap.

castleclass · 21/07/2025 22:22

I wouldn’t take a break but I found it life changing to start this medication, it changed everything for me.

uggmum · 21/07/2025 22:24

if the pen has already been used then you don’t need to keep it in the fridge. It can be kept at room temperature so you can keep it in your room

uggmum · 21/07/2025 22:26

Sorry. Seen it is not used yet.
are you jabbing before you go. If so. Use the new pen and save any existing pen for when you come back.

Edited

I'm not questioning having a break to eat whatever I like on holiday 🙄. I cannot take my next dose for a week from today. So for half the holiday the pen will need to be in the fridge as it's a new pen. I'd rather not have the subterfuge.

You're talking about the pertinent patient safety advice regarding still getting side effects even if I miss a dose (highly unlikely) but then in the next breath you suggest I take another dose only 3 days after taking my last dose?!

I thought about face cream/serum excuse but one of the people I'm on holiday with is my mother and I think she would have a nosey with the intent to use said face cream. It would be harder to hid it from her if it's stored in a public area. She is a the main reason I think I'll just leave the pen at home and start back up when I return.

I've used the last of my old pen today. I have a full unopened pen that i would need to store in the fridge for the first week of the holiday. I think I'll leave it, take a break, and jab again when I get home from the holiday.

Re your final sentence, you are allowed to do that as per the leaflet!

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.15481.pdf

>If necessary, you can change the day of your weekly Mounjaro injection, as long as it has been at least 3 days since your last injection.

MounjaroHolidayy · 21/07/2025 22:47

I'm not doubting that the leaflet says that. I'm calling out your insane implication that I would still get side affects from missing a dose, but fail to recognise the decidedly increased risk of side affects if I took a dose only 3 days after last dose.

It’s not insane at all, did you not ask for worst case scenario?

Worst case scenario is that I get side affects from a drug I've skipped a dose of? But then you suggest taking another dose of the drug after only 3 days without any mention of the significant increase in likelihood of experiencing side affects in this scenario? Ok. Makes sense.

Where did you get this accusation from?

Applecrumble24 · 21/07/2025 23:35

If you were on insulin or antidepressants for example, you wouldn’t just skip a dose to avoid difficult conversations. Continue with your usual prescribed medications, it’s nobody’s business but yours.
if someone asks, you could make something up but I don’t see why you should feel the need to. You have nothing to be ashamed of!

Punkkatkitty · 22/07/2025 07:29

Put it in the fridge and take a couple of weeks off and resume when you’re home.
Just did it for 2 weeks and all fine. Few pounds gained on holiday even though I didn’t go mad or anything, was nowhere near what I would normally would have ate and weight will be off again soon no doubt. Any weight loss programme acknowledges people sometimes want a break from watching what they are eating.
enjoy your holiday!

lightnesspixie · 22/07/2025 07:47

Take the dose just before you leave then go on holiday and skip a dose no big deal :)

susiedaisy1912 · 22/07/2025 07:49

Have a break from it and restart it when you’re back. I have done this. It’s really not an issue especially as you’re still only on the lowest starting dose.

Lifecircle · 22/07/2025 08:00

I find it difficult to understand why people start to get shirty with each other when an opinion is asked for and given.
The weight loss journey that most of us are on and post about on this site is difficult enough.
Be helpful and pleasant to each other....... pretty please.

Fortiesmum · 22/07/2025 08:09

I think you may be surprised just how many people do use it.

sc0ttishlass · 22/07/2025 11:52

Could you take a cool bag with ice and hide it in your room? Replace the ice blocks to keep it cool? X

PlodAlongPolly · 22/07/2025 16:33

Hi OP, from a purely best for you view-point I would advise not to skip. Skipping now might disrupt the great roll you’re on and impact your onward WL journey. Especially as you are new in and your system is getting accustomed to the meds which it seems to be responding well to.

I’m several months in and had a disruption to titrating up which resulted in a total stall of the best part of 3 months. V frustrating

You’re doing so well! On great roll (as someone who has had a very slow journey on MJ), keep going lovely

There are tiny USB powered micro travel fridges designed for meds that need to be kept cool like insulin (handbag size). I’d be tempted to get one of those and keep it in your knicker drawer! 🙂
