Has anyone had a gastric balloon?

Desperate times call for desperate measures! Considering a gastric balloon but feel a bit nervous. Would love to hear from anyone that’s had one

My best friend had one about 2y ago (after extensive research on her part) and hugely regrets it.
She was so poorly with it and still feeling some after effects. Her own GP told her she sees more post issues than benefits with it.
Friend said she’d have gone down the weight loss jab route had it been as commonly available then as it is now. Have you made a pro/con list between the two? At least on the latter you could stop?
Not a doc and mines is just a second hand share of an experience but hopefully this bumps your post and others will be here soon

Would you consider WLI? I’ve lost 2stone 2lb in 12 weeks :)

healthybychristmas · 20/07/2025 08:59

I wouldn't do any of those things if I could take weight loss injections instead. A friend of mine had a gastric band and really suffered. She is now putting weight back on. I'm on the weight loss injections, Mounjaro, and it's absolutely brilliant. It's a complete life changer.

Thank you all so much. I tried the weight loss jabs and tbh they didn’t do anything for me. Maybe it’s time to try again

did you calorie count on the jab? the jab will help you stay in a deficit and lose weight, you wont lose weight even with the jab if you arent in a calorie deficit. i would recommend using the nutracheck app to calculate your calories, stick to it then go from there, goodluck. ive lost almost 3st on it since march

Which one did you try? I'd recommend mounjaro. I've rarely heard of them not working. I was prediabetic too and now I'm normal bmi and it has resolved my prediabetes. I'd definitely recommend tracking calories as you have to eat less calories to lose and higher protein and lower carbs leads to more fat burning.

raspberryberet7 · 20/07/2025 20:50

Can anyone recommend the best place to try? I’m as well trying it again before going to extreme measures tbh. Thanks for all the advice everyone greatly appreciated x

If WLI aren't for you would you consider surgery. I had a gastric sleeve and it was life changing in a positive way.
Also have a look at Pound of cure and associated articles podcast. He is a bariatric surgeon who advocates for a whole food diet along side surgery and WLI.

SilenceInside · 20/07/2025 21:00

@raspberryberet7 just wondering what injection did you try before?

In terms of where to get WLI from, any of the GPhC registered pharmacies will do, they all supply the same medication. Have a look at the price comparison site https://monj.co.uk where you can see which pharmacies are currently the cheapest for Mounjaro. Watch out for some of the pharmacies being a subscription model, where they charge you every 4 weeks and send the next pen at the next dose up unless you tell them not to.

iamnotalemon · 20/07/2025 21:01

I had a gastric sleeve - this was a few years ago before WLI were a thing. I wish I’d done it earlier to be honest I ended up losing 7 stone.

12purplepencils · 20/07/2025 21:03

Did you try mounjaro? Saxenda didn't work for me a couple of years ago but Mounjaro has been good, slow but steady with not much in the first few weeks but 20kg a year later.

soupyspoon · 20/07/2025 21:05

I had a sleeve and also dont regret it, it comes with lots of changes that need to be made but I would never have lost the weight otherwise. I tried WLI but couldnt get on with them which was a shame but there we are

A member of my family had a balloon, he lost about 3 stone I think, after an intial week of full vomiting, he had no other effects. Is now on WLI and is a normal BMI now.

MaybeMrs · 20/07/2025 21:06

I know someone who had a balloon and she really advocates against it. She has so many problems and it has left her with ongoing issues. Another friend had a sleeve done and she has lost 10st. I’m on WLI and have lost almost 6st since December.

soupyspoon · 20/07/2025 21:07

What issues have people had with balloons, you take them out after a year dont you?

Redlightbulb · 21/07/2025 09:05

I am surprised gastric balloons are still a thing.
From what I have read they are expensive, don't work that well & are only in place for a year.
WLI are much cheaper in comparison, more effective & you can stay on them for life.
I fear you would be throwing money down the drain but I must admit I haven't researched in detail.
I would avoid unless you don't care about the cost / really have no other option.
