WLI have arrived. Suddenly terrified and thinking 'what the hell am I doing?'

I applied through Med Express, I've given them my GP details so all above board. I'm 13.4 stone at 5.6, so BMI 30. So I need to lose 3 stone roughly to get to the healthy weight category. But theres a voice in my head that says, come on, you are 58 and a size 14/16, that's fine, you dont need this.

But I also really want to feel healthier and lighter.

I had my sons graduation earlier this week. I spent ages doing my hair and make up, had bought a lovely new dress. Felt great until I saw the photos. I look absolutely huge.

Because I don't feel I can tell anyone in RL it feels like a really lonely decision.

Should I just get on with it?? It's Wegovy not mounjaro. Ive spent years slowly piling on weight, did keto a few years ago and lost a stone then stayed there for a year or so until a family bereavement got me troughing again.

65 here. Last September BMI 30- now 24.5. Last year on holiday I huffed and puffed with DH having to wait for me to catch up like a toddler. HBA1C prediabetic. This year I can chase the grandchildren, HBA1C 39 so no longer prediabetic and stride out with DH keeping up. Best thing I ever did. Not always a comfortable journey by any means and still require discipline but the end of food noise is such a relief. No regrets other than I wish I had done it earlier so my dream holiday and photos were with me as I am now, not red, sweaty and puffy. Good luck!!!

I identify with this so much!

I started bmi 32.4 13st 1lb 5ft 3" size 14/16 also prediabetic and high blood pressure, now 3 stone down. I started it as I was out of breath going up 3 flights of stairs and my legs felt like lead and I couldn't keep up with my friends or speak, how embarrassing, didn't even know I was prediabetic for years until a few months ago as GP never told me. Best thing I've done, now I can walk miles without feeling like my heart, lungs and legs are about to give way. I'm bmi 24.8 10st 0.5lbs, high blood sugar and blood pressure symptoms all gone. Do it!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/07/2025 22:44

OP, I was roughly the same weight and height a few years ago. I hated how I looked in photos, and as I approached my 50s I was worried about the longer term impact on my health.

This pre dated WLI, so I focused on my food intake for weight and exercise for health. It’s been a long slog, but being three stone lighter feels great. I’ve rediscovered a love of clothes shopping and I feel so much healthier and stronger.

if it was today, I’d seriously consider WLI. Learning to eat better and feeling fitter and healthier can only be a good thing.

Whether it’s WLI or other measures, it’s worth it. Good luck!

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 18/07/2025 22:54

If it helps OP, I started mounjaro in early May, was 12 stone 4 with a BMI of 31 (I am short!) and as of today weigh 10 stone 1. Still not quite at goal weight but here are my wins:
2 stone 3 lbs down in 2.5 months
BP has lowered
inflammation in knee has reduced
scalp psoriasis has improved

go for it! 😀

Radioundermypillow · 19/07/2025 10:58

Ok tonight's the night. Feeling very anxious and a bit sick ironically dont want to eat much. Had a small bowl of muesli with half a banana and will have a protein shake for lunch. Sea bass tonight.

Now overthinking absolutely everything!

It’ll be such an anticlimax after you’ve done the first one. I’ve just done my 55th injection yesterday, it’s just routine and doesn’t require very much thought at all now.

Yeah I know you are right.

Should I have tried mounjaro?
Will it work?
What if I damage my pancreas?
What if I lose so much weight none of my clothes fit?
Will my daughters find out?
What if the stomach issues are so bad I can't sit with my clients?

Etc etc

At least dh knows and is supportive but mildly amused by it all.

I’m in a similar position OP, early 40s but BMI was 30 and size 16 with 3 st to lose. Before mounjaro I’d resigned myself to the fact that I’d be stuck at this size forever. Just before I went on mounjaro I bought this jumpsuit from a vintage shop even though it was a size 10, just cos i absolutely loved it and thought, well maaaybe one day, you never know! But it very quickly got shoved in my ‘skinny bag’ (along with piles of other clothes I love but haven’t been able to wear since I was in my 20s and actually was a size 10). And I started feeling like I was in denial and should just sell everything in the bag as I really didn’t imagine it’d ever be possible to lose 3 stone on my own. A stone maybe, but after that I figured my body would just stall and I wouldn’t be able to lose anymore. However with mounjaro it’s actually become a reality that I really don’t think I’d ever have achieved on my own. Although I’m only on week 5 and a stone down, MJ is the magic ingredient that enables me to stick to eating a low-calorie, healthy diet long-term with no cheat meals (or cheat days or weekends!) or falling off the wagon with a Friday night takeaway and then sacking it all off till Monday (that’s where I always failed with diets in the past). It’s just so much easier to stick to, so it’s definitely worth it I’d say. And I’d ever go so far as to say, for me I think it really was the only way. I’m only on 3.75mg and suppression is still very good. Minimal side effects like a bit of fatigue & slight dizziness sometimes but I think it’s worth it. I’ve heard mounjaro has less side effects than Wegovy but not 100% sure about that plus everyone reacts differently. So I say go for it! You’ve got nothing to lose (apart from a big chunk of weight!) and the starting dose is very low so if you don’t like it you’d only have to put up with side effects for max a week then you don’t have to do it again and it’d be out of your system. Good luck!

And to answer your questions:

I’d do research about mounjaro vs wegovy, mounjaro might be safer side-effects wise if you’re worried
It will almost certainly work! There’s only a very small number of people it doesn’t work on
Why would it damage your pancreas?
If you lose 3 stone some of your clothes won’t fit but you that means you get to go shopping for new, smaller clothes!
No one will find out if you don’t want them too - it’s very discreet, only one injection a week. If you lose a lot of weight fast though, they might suspect
In my experience of people taking it IRL & on the threads on here side-effects are mild or non-exist so I doubt you’d have bad stomach issues but if you’re worried maybe start it on a week you haven’t got much on

Thank you! Online seems to suggest wegovy has less side effects than mj, which is what helped me to choose it. I guess I'll find out!

OP, the toughest decision is actually deciding to take a WLI. Your current stats are just like mine, I’m 56, started late May at 13.13, 5:6 as well. High cholesterol too. Size 16+ in clothes
I also did keto 2 years ago and lost 22 lbs but regained it just as fast. 8 weeks in, I’m down 11lbs (not a dramatic drop like some people but slow and steady) I’ve a long way to go yet to get to a healthy BMI but I can already see the benefits in how I feel about myself. I’ve taken up a strength and conditioning class twice a week and I can see steady improvement over the weeks. I also go to Pilates and try to walk every day. You can’t eat what you were eating before, but Mounjaro helps me to stay in a calorie deficit without food talking to me, like it normally does. Looking forward to a week’s holiday in Italy from tomorrow and I know I won’t come home heavier than I went.
Best of luck!

Wegovy here too. 4 jabs in and feeling fine. On holiday so can’t weigh but lost 3.5kgs in the first week.

The relief of reduced/absent food noise is so freeing.

i had similar worries OP… similar height/weight to you too.

You can do it!! Don’t think about it too much!

SevernWonders · 19/07/2025 15:21

There is no reason at all that it will damage your pancreas....there are lots of conditions that being overweight can cause though.

I've been on WLI for over a year and no harm done, but 7 stone gone. Started at a BMI of 38, now 23.

Good luck OP, the jabbing itself is literally nothing - I didn't feel my first one as I did it in my well padded stomach!

Radioundermypillow · 19/07/2025 23:40

Just done the first jab. I literally did not feel it at all - slightly concerned it didnt go in! More likely to be the large fat roll not having many nerve endings. Anyway, I've been feeling really anxious all day. Hopefully I won't feel too horrendous tomorrow.

Totally normal except I feel as though I'm getting a cold. Not hungry but I never am first thing.

I am drinking a mug of tea though when I'd normally be drinking coffee. Dont fancy a coffee....

OP posts:
perimenopoppet · 20/07/2025 11:52

I go off coffee too the first few days after my jab but come back to it later in the week. Before I would never start the day without it! Well done @Radioundermypillow you’ve overcome the first hurdle and now it’s just onwards and downwards 🙂 don’t be disheartened if it’s not super fast it can be easy to get that impression from social media - slow and steady really does win the race and it all adds up week by week into noticeable loss within a couple of months for almost everyone who perseveres.

Catladyof7 · 20/07/2025 20:37

I was scared about doing my first injection too, never injected myself before but i was out of breath and one flight of stairs and was huffing and puffing and i have a heart condition as it is. Could see me having a heart attack if i didnt do something.
5ft and almost 13 stone and size 18 were getting too tight .
Yesterday did a 3.75mg from my 5mg pen, but will do the full 5mg next week
Oh, i am 68 too .

Catladyof7 · 20/07/2025 20:39

4 weeks today and i have lost around 8 pounds so far. I also, didnt buy scales till the second week so can monitor better now .

My goal weight is 9stone, so still a long way to go.

Week,5 starts tomorrow.

Thats great! Well done. I’ve got my 5th jab tonight, as of this morning I’ve only lost 5.7lb so far. Very happy with that! But very slow. I have to lose 10st to get into healthy BMI (I’ve never been there before ever since toddlerhood probably!) So at this rate I will be going for yeeeeeears 🤣

Edited

Feel the same as i seem to be stuck at the moment, maybe i am just inpatient as usual.
I am dying to see the scales say 11st something instead of 12 something.
I still have 3 stone to lose and feels like forever

Catladyof7 · 21/07/2025 14:30

I did my 5th jab Saturday , but all my food tastes horrible now so thats not good .
