Storing fifth dose in a syringe

Let me know if this is crazy or ok.

I will be taking the “magic” fifth dose next week but I’ll be on holiday in Scotland (driving there). Can I extract the dose in an insulin syringe, close it up, then take just that instead of the pen and syringe? I take my dose on Tuesday and we go on Sunday so it would be in the syringe for around 48 hours.

I wouldn't. Syringes are only sterile until opened. You lose the airtight seal and there is a risk of contamination. One use syringes are made of plastics not suited for storing medication beyond a few minutes. You will need to store the syringe with the plunger extended.

The pen doesn't take up much room at all, I'd just take it and extract from the vial while there with a sterile syringe.

how long are you away for? If it’s a week, missing a few days isn’t going to do any harm. Personally I would wait but I know lots would rather keep on schedule

I’m away Sunday through Friday so taking the dose on Friday would mean having it three days late which isn’t the end of the world.

I think I will probably just take the pen and a sterile syringe.

Why though? Just take the pen and the syringes. What’s the reason for wanting to pre-extract it?

Surely you are aware these are sterile medical devices and once you open them no longer sterile? You are going to put it into your body, don’t mess about with that.

Please don’t do this.

Ok I will take the pen and syringe. I was just thinking of saving space in my luggage but the pen is pretty small.

You'll need to take it in a cold container.
