WL injections ahead of IVF

HiHelloHowdy · 03/07/2025 10:13

has anyone else used mounjaro (or similar) to lose weight ahead of IVF? If so, how long did you have to wait after your last injection before starting IVF process.
Asking as a friend of mine was told 6 weeks, while another was told 12 weeks. I have my consultation in 2 weeks time so I’ll find out then what my clinic say but curious to see what the majority are saying.

I’m sure I read it was 2 months x

Mounjaro should be stopped before starting IVF or attempting conception due to potential risks during pregnancy. It's generally recommended to discontinue Mounjaro at least two months before trying to conceive, to allow the medication to clear the system. This allows time to adjust to a sustainable calorie intake and maintain achieved weight loss.

Thanks both. I had seen 8 weeks online when I looked too, but seems some clinics are being extra cautious and advising 12 weeks. And some saying 6 weeks is fine. Doesn’t seem to be much consistency. Hoping our clinic is 8 weeks but have a feeling it’ll say 12.

Because there is very limited data in humans of potential risks to either the foetus or the pregnancy, I think clinics will be very much making their own best guesses.

Most people only have limited goes at IVF you want to give yourself the best chance possible, so I would err on the side of caution. While 4 weeks extra might seem like a long time it really isn't in the bigger picture if it reduces any low probably (but possibly high impact) risks even further.

I would really probe your clinic around what data they are basing the wait time around, what risks do they see (or is it just guesses) and if waiting a few weeks longer would be safer.

Good luck with everything.

My NHS endocrinologist, who specialises in obstetrics, says I have to stop Mounjaro (she prescribes this) 2 months before embryo transfer. I haven't checked with my clinic yet as I am still 1.4kg off IVF goal and ideally I would drop a bit lower to allow for any weight gain during the wait. Currently the weight loss has stalled, going up to 15 for my next pen for the final push. When I get to goal weight, I will make an appointment with my clinic and see what they say but it'll be a FET so close to 3 months from the date of the first appointment anyway. If yours will be a fresh cycle, they may want you to wait the 2 months before the initial consultation. I wish you luck with your weight loss and IVF, it's a difficult journey to be on x
